Sudbury Water Meadows

I am fortunate to walk the meadows regularly and they are lovely - although in the winter they are likely to be living up to their name and will be flooded! The wild flowers are beautiful and the wildlife diverse - kingfishers, swans, cormarants...

Orford Ness National Nature Reserve

Wild, remote and exposed, Orford Ness contains the ruined remnants of a disturbing past. Ranked among the most important shingle features in the world, rare and fragile wildlife thrives where weapons, including atomic bombs, were once tested and perfected.

Reviewed By DrRoger56

Orford Ness was a military experimental centre from the First World War until 1995. From the development of radar in the 1930s to the testing of some components of nuclear weapons in the 1950s & 60s - plus other experiments and research, elements of which are still Top Secret! You will see the remains of the the military history and the rich flora and fauna that are increasingly important as the military remains are allowed to decay. Well worth a visit - to see it all involves a walk of more than 7kms.

Lackford Lakes

What a marvellous place to visit! Four of us had a great time on our first exploration. And yes we did catch glimpses of kingfishers! The herons, swans, geese and ducks were easier to spot, and there’s an abundance of garden birds at the feeding stations. Friendly and helpful staff in the cafe helped make this a memorable visit. If you’re interested in wildlife and prefer level walking this is a place ‘not to miss’!

Fantastic, we went here twice on our Suffolk trip, the birding was superb, it is very hard to describe how well this site is laid out, it offers all aspects a bird watcher could wish for, Coast, Marshes, Reed Beds, Heathland and Woodland. Not only birds the Otters kept us amused as well. Highly recommended.

Suffolk Owl Sanctuary

The Suffolk Owl Sanctuary is home to more than 80 beautiful and unusual owls and other birds of prey. Between Easter & September, we give three flying displays daily, each featuring different birds. There is also a woodland walk featuring red squirrels and "Meerkat Kastle", the home to our resident tribe of desert dwellers. Our picnic areas are scattered throughout the centre. Children are catered for with an inclusive play area, mini-maze, a free S.O.S. Safari activity with a gift for all young participants, and other games & activities. In addition we run a selection of falconry courses and photo days which allow great access to the birds - these are very popular with keen photographers. There is full wheelchair access to the Sanctuary throughout.

Visited today after making the trip from Norfolk, so glad we decided to, what an amazing place. Our visit was a delight from start to finish, from the personal encounter with the Meerkats (for up to five people at a time, i was lucky enough to be the only one today) to the informative flying display to the details on each of the different birds in the averies. with an unhurried feel (the wrist bands, so you can come and go were a real bonus) and friendly staff you can easily lose three or four hours here. picnic tables in amoung the averiries were a nice touch and made a perfect place for a small pack lunch.. there is lots to do for children and even a nod to the real reason of the sanctuary a chance to vist the bird hospital.... The flying display is a must both for the close up feel of the magnificent birds and knowledge imparted in an informal and fun way by the dedicated staff and aided by wonderful volunteers. well worth a family day out! some info now. not dog friendly in the sanctuary itself but the surrounding barns are. no toilets on site, but very near outside wrist bands means you can come and go. free parking, lots of disabled spots right outside. disabled friendly inside with room for small disabled scooter and or wheel chair.

What an absolutely fabulous morning spent on the Hawk Walk with Steve and Treacle (Harris Hawk). Steve was very knowledgeable and kept us very well informed. Making sure that I got the best out of the time. Treacle is a real character! Beautiful Harris Hawk and gave us some fantastic photographs.
