It was not too difficult to walk the path up to Susita Hippos Mountain. but what an amazing surprise when you enter that ancient Roman Holy City overlooking the sea of galilee. Walking in these Roman Streets you feel as if you are walking back in time. the beautiful Roman houses and streets are made of naturla big stones. There are several Altars and temples for rituals and prayers all made of big marbel pillars with beautiful Roman carvings and art of the time. Lately the archiologist of susita Dr. Michael Eizenberg has discovered a grand Roman Theater there which makes this city of Susita a very important place. I feel this place is very powerful and special and the view from there is absolutely fantastic : you see the entire sea of galilee from there and part of the Golan Heights too. don't miss it.

My wife and I waited until too late in the fall bird migration so when we arrived at the nature resrve there were relatively few birds. But what disappointed us was that even though there were articles that the new visitors center had opened, when we got there on Novermber 30 it was still not open. We went, even though it was late in the season since there was an article in the press mentioning that the new multi-media center, which cost over $23 million and took 10 years to build, was finally open. Even though it is always pleasant to visit the resrve, to maximize your visit check to see that the new visitors center is open. We took the tractor ride that took about one hour with explainations of the birds.

Agmon HaHula is part of a nature reserve which is located north of Kinneret/Sea of Galilee. This used to be savage marshland with endemic malaria when the first wave of Aliya came to Israel in the 1880's. Many died of this disease and a lot of effort was put into draining these swamps and reverting them in to arable farmland. In the late 1990's it was decided that the original ecosystem was preferable and the process was reversed again. So now there's a lake where huge flocks of migrating birds can rest and feed on their routes to their summer and winter homes. In October and November thousands of birds can be seen: storks, cranes, etc. It's a truly majestic sight to see them arriving and circling in the sky before they land. There are also otters, buffaloes and other animals to been seen. We rented bicycles and followed the trail. A wonderful experience.

The Snir Stream (Hatsbani) is the longest of the Jordan River tributaries. The stream flows all year round, through a well-developed “riverside forest” of plane trees and travertine walls. Unlike the other Jordan tributaries, the Snir Stream is naturally affected by flooding, and so there are noticeable differences in flow between winter and summer.

The Jordan river is actually the result of 3 rivers (Nahal) connecting into one: This one, Nahal Snir (Hasbani), Nahal Hermon (Banyas) and Nahal Dan (El Lidani) These 3 rivers have each their Natural Reserve and Park. I have reviewed the 2 other ones here as well and I strongly recommend that in winter, January or February, or at least after a heavy rain you take your kids and drive up North to see these 3 reserves. Try to get at the same time the Free Pass Card Matmon at the entrance of these parks to be able to come back any time you wish the same year. The sights after good rain are exceptional.

My 15 y.o. daughter and I visited and took a dip in the hot springs pools (you should know they smell like rotten eggs b/c of the sulfur from the geothermal springs) and then went to explore the rest of the park, including the alligator/crocodile park, the petting zoo, the antiquities, and the parrot show. The whole morning went by quickly and we enjoyed every minute.
