If you love books and want to learn more about Iceland’s history visit Flateyri and the Old Bookstore! Wonderful! You can see the family home which is a “living museum” for a small fee and buy new and secondhand books in the bookstore. The secondhand books are priced by weight! We enjoyed our visit! Takk fyrir!

This charming cafe/museum is a delightful place to spend a few hours. The interesting exhibitions offer insight into the wildlife and culture in the area and an array of boats and machines are on display. It was an additional treat to meet Jamie who gave me wonderful tips on places to walk nearby and visit. The giftshop has many books and other tempting items. The dessert was great too. I'm so pleased I stopped in.

We visited in winter. The place was officially closed, but we could still walk around the site which is located on the shore. Wonderful replica fishing huts with grass roofs and fish drying shack with fish in it. It was really charming. Great views of the town, mountains and fjord. We watched a seal fish and lay on a rock very near shore. Just 100 meters or so up the road is an adorable lighthouse. Across from the lighthouse, there is an easy hiking trail up the mountain. All this might not warrant a 7 hour trip from Reykjavik but if you are in Isafjordur or otherwise nearby in the Westfjords, this could be a really great place to spend 1-3 hours, winter or summer, open or closed.

The Sheep Farming Museum is 12 km south of Holmavik by road 68. The exhibition itself tells about sheep farming and concentrates on providing diverse entertainment for all ages. There are also theme exhibitions about history and nature, f.x. about cursed places in the area. Visitors can buy coffee and homemade cakes, ice cream and handicraft from the area and feed lambs with milk from a bottle.
