August 31, 2021 Jacquiline Delozier

Welcome to Germany's largest island, with a myriad of terrains to delight outdoor explorers, from sandy coastlines to dramatic chalk cliffs. It's been a seaside resort since 1818 and is one of Germany's top vacation spots. There's something for everyone, from the two national parks to a former royal residence and a castle to the beach, of course - head to Binz if sunbathing is your primary objective.

Dokumentationszentrum Prora

We parked at the end of building #1 near the beach and walked along the new buildings to the museum about 1.5km one way. There is a small paid lot just off the main road. The walk allowed us to see how they have renovated this colossal national socialist complex built in the 1930s. As you walk along there are a few (and I suspect more will open as time goes on) small stores and restaurants as well as a hotel already in place in the finished buildings to stop at if you wish. The museum at the end of the walk and in the building not yet renovated. While most of it is in german language there is a 33 minute video with english subtitles on the top floor. Would suggest you go and see it first as it gives you a good idea what happened in this place so long ago. Once done you can view some of the photos and piece together the history based on what you saw in the video even if you cant understand german. This museum left me with an feeling of the suffering of the past and appreciation of what gentrification will do to it. I hope they save this for more people to experience in the future and we don't lose the ability to see the errors of the past.
