Bell Island Community Museum - No. 2 Mine Tour

Closed for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Opening May 2021. Group and Off Season Tours can be booked in April, 2021. This “Cultural Tourism Award” winner is a 20 minute ferry ride from scenic Portugal Cove. When you arrive, the #2 Underground Mine Tour & Museum is a 5 minute car ride from the ferry dock. At our facility you will be greeted by local tour guides who will share our history and tell you amazing stories about our forefathers. You'll be inspired by tales of these hard working Bell Islanders who risked their lives to supply the world markets with precious iron ore and were instrumental in contributing to the economic stability of the province of Newfoundland Labrador in the early 1900's. Our experience includes a walking tour that goes down into the #2 Mine to 650 feet on a 10 degree slope. Wear a jacket or warm sweater, it is 6 degrees. After your tour, sit and enjoy a cup of our own Miners' Blend Coffee with a treat in our newly renovated Mug Up Coffee Shop.

Had a fantastic time learning the history of the mine and of the business of mining, our guide Bonnie was amazing and brought the tour to life and as a bonus she has the voice of an angel singing a song for us about mining. The whole island was a highlite of our trip

Vernon's Antique Toy Shop

Wow. Wow. Wow. I cannot our into words how amazing this place is. You have to see it for yourself. Vernon is very friendly and knowledgeable. He was happy to tell us stories about his cars and even let us sit in a couple. His collection goes far beyond cars as he has hundreds of collectibles from time gone by - Elvis, Marilyn, A&W, diners, old gas stations, Julie boxes and more. You have to see it to fully appreciate it. But you will not be disappointed.

It is part of the Grenfell Historic Properties which also include The Grenfell Interpretation Centre, Grenfell Handicrafts, Tea House HIll & walking trail, the Dock House Museum and the Jordi Bonet Murrals at the Rontunda. This was truly the Grenfell experience. Your admission allows you to visit several areas. There is a very informative film of Dr. Grenfell's work along the coast showing the harsh conditions he braved and a handicraft shop in the museum area. He was a remarkable man who not only doctored the people but at times acted as minister to marry couples! Then a short drive takes you to Dr. Grenfell's home where you can see his living area as well as his office. The tour guides are great and let you go at your own pace. You can also hike the trail to the old tea room. Beware of the mosquitos while hiking! Don't miss this.

The Rooms

The Rooms is a place for all of us: for those who live here and those who want to experience it fully. Part sanctuary, part showcase, part classroom and part playground, it’s both a destination and a journey. This is a gathering place, a creative space and a cultural centre as distinct and unique as Newfoundland and Labrador. It is our place to come together, to create meaningful and memorable experiences. It is our place to share the best of who we are.

A magnificent collection of collections on a stunning site. Well signed, easily accessible, big range of exhibits. We saw WW1 exhibit, rughooking exhibit, Group of Seven exhibit, natural history exhibit, cultures of NL exhibit (very sensitively handled, bravo, and a wonderful display of local expressions!) ... and somehow we missed the David Blackwood exhibition (I'm very disappointed about this, but can't figure out how it happened). Bravo, this place is sensational!

Meet David Boyd, owner, fisherman, museum collector, and author of inspirational poetry! From the first moment we were entertained with true Newfoundland fishing stories, a cleaning of a cod, an amazing underwater viewing of the numerous fish under the dock, and a walk along his wharf that is full of camera opportunities! Sorry to say goodbye, but do pick up a copy of his poetry, Outport Home, in their packed full of wonderful moments of Newfoundland....including the Ugly Stick!
