A beautiful place with the most compassionate team you could ask for!

Reviewed By KatelynH8410

Stella Maris is both a beautiful place serving a phenomenal cause, and a place that you can stay that you will know you are taken care of, even in an emergency situation. I arrived at Stella Maris in advance of my Kilimanjaro trek with Peak Planet. Shortly after arriving (within hours actually), I came down with a fever, and it went downhill from there. Turns out, I caught a nasty virus prior to leaving the States and it kicked in full gear after the long thirty hour journey and it was prepared to take me down completely. I had never traveled internationally before, I was traveling alone, and I was scared to death. It was not something I was prepared for. I was not climbing anywhere at that point, but I was more concerned with the fact that I was ill and not getting better. I didn't know when I would get better, when I would be able to travel home, or what I was even supposed to do if I needed to get to a hospital immediately. Teddy and the team at Stella Maris saved my life. I had a fever that wasn't going down, I was very dehydrated, and it was only getting worse. Instead of leaving me to my own demise as many other places would have, they cared about me and my health. They checked on me, made sure I got to the clinic and got the medical treatment I desperately needed, and more importantly, I was terrified and Teddy stayed with me whole way. I never felt alone, and I knew the whole time that if something were to happen, they would have found me and gotten me medical attention before it got really bad. They made sure I had food to fit my strange new diet and that I ate, made sure I had tea and water, and just generally made sure I didn't feel alone or hopeless. I don't think I've ever been that scared before, especially with two children at home waiting for me, but at the end of every day, I knew Teddy and the rest of the team at Stella Maris had my back and would make sure I made it home to my children. I will be forever greatful for them and the care and compassion they showed me. There aren't many places that will do that, but Stella Maris and their team did, and I will forever be greatful for them. Not only are they amazing to their guests, but they serve a beautiful cause by using the money earned from the hotel to fund a school on the lodge grounds that provides education to children who otherwise may not have access to it. As a mother myself, it was an absolute joy to hear children playing and singing outside every morning. Ensuring children get a quality education in Tanzania is very important, and Stella Maris is improving the lives of the children in their community and it's absolutely beautiful what they do. While driving past the school, the children smile, wave, and give high-fives, and you can just see how thrilled they are to be able to go to school there, and it's thanks to the incredible work of the people at Stella Maris I cannot recommend another lodge over Stella Maris, in Tanzania or anywhere else, because there is no place else that will provide the same quality of care and compassion while simultaneously giving to a beautiful cause. The lodge itself is paradise, the hotel is very clean and comfortable, and all the members of their team are kind and welcoming. If you ever need a place to stay, go to Stella Maris. You will not be disappointed in the slightest and will leave thinking of when you can come back.

Kind staff and gorgeous hotel

Fantastic service, really kind staff, and a beautiful location! This hotel is really friendly, and from the moment we checked in, we felt incredibly looked after. They always go the extra mile- my friend was ill and one of the managers walked all the way to the market in the rain to buy ginger and make her a tea! Really sweet :)

I stayed to do a day climb and safari in the area. Very pleased with the staff. Rooms are beautiful and so are the open areas and communal spaces. (They have turtles and monkeys too!) a bit thanks to Digna for her efficiency and hospitality during my stay with them this time. I will definitely be coming back and staying at honey badger. Felt very welcomed and at ease as a solo traveller. Food is excellent and options for dinner and lunch on site are great. Great for resting after a climb of Kili! A+ for my stay. Thank you all.

Kaliwa Lodge

The new design lodge is situated at a height of 1300m on the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro and it is just a few minutes away from Machame Gate, the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park. The small bustling town of Moshi, which is roughly 20km from the lodge, can be reached easily thanks to the good tarmac roads. The exclusive location of the lodge, just above a lush green valley, offers direct views of Kibo with its white glaciers.

Beautiful lodge in calm quiet area with breathtaking views but terrible services and food!

Reviewed By Faith M

Visited Kaliwa Lodge few days ago. To start positively, it is such a beautiful place, calm, quiet, peaceful area with amazing views. We sat by the terrace overlooking the vast breathtaking view in front of us and the wondrous Mt Kilimanjaro in sight (briefly!). Now to the negatives, overall service was very poor, it took 30mins to get us the menu and another 30mins to actually get the drinks we ordered (we were 3 ladies and 1 child). Food took 1.5hrs and when it came the presentation and taste was terrible. We ordered the sandwich of which the toasted bread was hard and barely eatable, the filling was plain and tasteless. We also ordered Guacamole, but what we got was plain mashed avocado spread on 2 slices of bread. We were left alone by the terrace for hrs without a waiter in sight to come and check on us. I could write an endless review, but all in all we were extremely disappointed in how we were treated, the overall service and especially the food. Please Kaliwa Lodge, could you greatly improve on how you treat local residents who come for a visit, improve on your services, food and hygiene. Very disappointed!

Pefect conference hotel

We booked this hotel for a small conference. The choice was excellent. The management could not have been more helpful, and the conference arrangements were excellent - as well as the accomodation and food. Only negative was the pool (water a bit murky) otherwise a 5* experience.

Great budget hostel in a beautiful location

Reviewed By Sofie L

We are a couple who stayed two nights in this hostel. The place is beautiful, the room big, hot shower and friendly staff. Frank the owner was very helpful and friendly. He drove us to a nice restaurant in Moshi and made us some nice budget tours to a coffee plantation and a waterfall. In Moshi we can reccomend the restaurant “cafe deli chez” where you can get great local food on a budget. We also found a hotel with a rooftop near the food marked in the city, where you can see the most beauful view of Kilimanjaro. It takes around 7-10 minutes by car/tuctuc to the city, bit the location is nice and you wake up to the sound off birds instead og city hustle!

Perfect Base for Kilamanjaro

Reviewed By davlew14

We had the pleasure of staying in this hotel during a recent holiday in Tanzania. Closest airport is Kilimanjaro Intl Airport, about 1hr by taxi (tip: ask the lodge to arrange a taxi to collect you at the airport). We arrived late around 10:30pm but Agnes and the reception staff were there to greet us and even kept the kitchen open so we could have a late dinner! Many thanks! Due to our limited time in Tanzania, we contacted the Lodge the day before arrival and asked if they could arrange 1 day hiking in Kilimanjaro NP at short notice, they arranged hotel pick up and a legendary mountain guide (he holds the world record for ascent and descent 14h 50m!). Agnes also arranged a great waterfall hike and visit to a coffee plantation at short notice the following day. Hotel is very modern and has all the necessary facilities. Breakfast is excellent, served on the terrace next to the pool. Rooms are spacious and well equipped. Great view of the mountain on clear days. Highly recommended!

I tried a few hostels in Moshi and they were all pretty unorganised. However Hikers Rest was completely organised, extremely friendly staff and the prices were excellent. The restaurant on the rooftop has an amazing view of Kilamanjaro and has great options too! I also left an item of clothing behind and Erasto took the time and fronted the cost to send it ahead to Dar Es Salaam for me. Excellent service all round. Thank you!

Amazing rooms, lovely food and cheerful staff

Reviewed By Chaggaman

This hotel is in Kiusa Street middle of the city and didn't know what to expect. However my 2-day stay here - extended to 3 days was an amazing experience. First, the reception staff were extremely helpful and served with a cheerful attitude, you can easily see that they like working here. Particularly, Edna shone and did her work as if this place was her own business! The rooms are large, clean and everything working to the highest level just like any other good hotel in the West European city! The bed was large, there is a reading table, a comfortable chair, large wardrobe, TV, the toilet is large and clean and the shower amazing, with hot water and two different shower heads (fixed and portable). The restaurant served delcious local foods and I enjoyed every meal I had here. A tip for ordering food here is to ask them what specials they have. One evening when I just wanted a light food and not anything on the menu, I asked the waiter and she suggested a 'supu' and 'chapati' - see photo! This was an amazing dish all and a very affordable price. The chef and waiters seem to love their job and everything else works well! The WiFi was great, it was free and fast and accessible from all rooms, corridors, restaurant and the bar! In the evening I went up in the bar area and could see the whole town of Moshi from here, including mount Kilimanjaro - see photos. The only downside of staying here is that they do not have a garden to sit out - as it is in the city centre. Overall, although this hotel is in the city centre, the inside is quiet, clean, secure and comfortable. It is easy to get to and the staff are extremely helpful. I enjoyed my stay here and I will come again whenever I visit Moshi.
