Birmingham and Midland Institute

Welcome to the BMI. The Birmingham & Midland Institute has been at the heart of Birmingham’s cultural life for over 150 years. It was originally founded by an Act of Parliament in 1854 for the “Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literature and Art amongst all calluses of persons resident in Birmingham and Midland counties.” Charles Dickens was one of our biggest advocates and one of our earliest Presidents. We are also the site for the original Birmingham Library. The library's holding has steadily increased since joining the Institute in1955. We have collections you can't find anywhere else in the world. We also offer our wonderful rooms for hire, Each room in the BMI is fitted with modern AV equipment, complimentary WIFI and wonderful coffee lounge. Our rooms can accommodate capacitates of up to 250.

I am amazed with the new glow up of the library it is very spacious and has endless facilities I love going weekly to revise as it’s nice and quite most of the time. Also love the new kids section however I would’ve preferred if they did that on a seperate side or room as it can get super noisy when they have the toddlers / kids events on and there’s people trying to work, would appreciate if they included a water fountain /bottle filler so people can fill up their water bottles other then that I rlly love the Walsall library and highly recommend everyone pops down as theres something for everyone as they have now included a good few areas in the library which they didn’t have before including the teenage section!! ????????????????????????

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Good atmosphere, and a good place to spend an hour or too. It's my favourite library, and I enjoy coming here 2 or 3 times a week. The library also opens on a Sunday, so you can come in to choose books or use the computers. Quite a good size library. And they have a hot drinks machine, the drinks are £1.00. So you can read a book and have a hot drink too. They also run crafts sessions, and there is a Lego club that meets once a month. There is a knit and natter group that meets on a Friday too. Worth coming to see.
