The 10 best hotels in Puerto Escondido, Mexico

August 5, 2022 Timmy Ribble

Looking for a tropical Mexican fishing village with relaxing beaches, oceanfront seafood bars and restaurants, unspoiled reefs for diving and snorkeling, and waves suitable for championship surfing? Puerto Escondido has all that plus the Laguna de Manialtepec mangrove lagoon for tours combining kayaking, boating, bird-watching, and swimming in phosphorescent waters. Regularly scheduled airline service links Mexico City and Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM). Rent an umbrella at the town beach, Playa Principal, which parallels the Avenida Perez Gasga hotel and restaurant row. Stop in one of the hotels near the beach for a drink or take the family horseback riding. A small freshwater lagoon at the mouth of the river, Rio Rigadillo, marks the border with Playa Marinero, which has waves suitable for beginning surfers. The whole family will enjoy the mile-long shoreline walkway known as Andador Escénico, which leads across the rocks to El Faro lighthouse and the Sueño Posible scenic overlook. Beyond the lighthouse, Playa Principal transitions into Playa Manzanillo, a swimmable beach with clear waters extending towards Puerto Angelito. Rent a boogie board or equipment to snorkel the coral and rocks. If Playa Manzanillo gets too crowded on a holiday weekend, catch one of the water taxis linking Puerto Escondido’s seven beaches. Hire a skiff to take the family sightseeing or dolphin and sea turtle viewing. Fish for trophy sailfish or catch a dinner of yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi (dorado), grouper, roosterfish, mackerel, or snapper. Watch the experts surf the 6-15 foot swells and hollow tubes of Playa Zicatela. International competitions in August and November draw the pros to demonstrate their prowess on the Mexican Pipeline. Snorkel or surf the clear shallow waters beneath the high cliffs surrounding Playa Carrizalillo. High red cliffs, housing, and hotels surround riptide-plagued Playa Bacocho, which is good for long romantic beach walks and sunsets. For more adventure, dive Pressure Point’s tectonic plate fault lines or Punta Colarada’s volcanic overhangs, ledges, and lava rock swimthroughs. If you are lucky you will see lobsters, stingrays, moray and snowflake eels, barracudas, yellow tangs, parrotfish, and puffers.

Beautiful hotel in La Punta, Puerto Escondido

I stayed here for 2 weeks whilst taking part in a yoga teacher training. I would highly reccomend this hotel for the following reasons: 1. The staff - they are incredibly kind and hardworking, really going above and beyond to make sure we had a fantastic stay. 2. The location - the hotel is located very near the centre of the La Punta area, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. 3. The hotel itself - the facilities such as the rooms (especially in the newer part of the hotel) fitness studio, pool and restaurant were all well maintained and great to use. Overall, I really couldn’t fault my experience here. The hotel is beautiful but what really makes it are the wonderful, kind staff who made it feel like a home away from home.

Best hotel in Puerto Escondido

Loved that the hotel had private access to one of the best beaches in PE, Playa Carrizalillo and that it's a short walk to the Rinconada, with a great variety of restaurants and the walk to Plaza Zicatella is easy, too. The location is great. The food is even better - during our stay we were able to sample breakfast, lunch and dinner and each experience was fantastic, fresh food prepared in innovative ways. The staff was very helpful, arranging excursions for us and keeping in touch via text. I researched the rooms extensively before booking because my husband and I enjoy having a glass of wine at the end of the day on a patio or balcony. We were in Villa Terrazza, which has a large, expansive covered deck with a table and hammocks overlooking the beach. I understand that rooms don't matter for a lot of people, especially if you're going to be out and about, but at this property, some villas are better than others, depending on what you like and who you're traveling with. I think Terraza might be the most private, Puebla's entrance is right across from the entrance to Terraza. Venecia might be the least, with a patio that looks out to the garden area. Villas Escondido is the floor under Terraza. Overall, our trip to PE was made more memorable because of the enjoyment we experienced staying at Villa Carrizalillo.

Pros Very friendly and helpful staff Good location if you like Zicatela Decent breakfast Cons Noise - Difficult to sleep as the room was literally shaking from the booming music opposite. In fairness we were kindly moved rooms on request to the one furthest away from the front which helped. Woke up at 7am sharp to the continual sound of a hammer tap and power tools. This went on all morning until we left. General cleanliness -towel had a brown smear on it and the flush in the toilet didn't work at all. Rather than a hotel, its more like a hostel. Very expensive for what it is as its really just a very basic room.

Beautiful but everything is scarce

Reviewed By Martin D

First: the grounds are gorgeous. The building is clean and well-maintained, and the beach club is very pretty and on an uncrowded beach. Rooms are cramped but pleasant and very clean. But an "all-inclusive" resort should make you feel at ease amongst its abundance. And Posada Real utterly fails at this, introducing scarcity to make routine tasks stressful. The food: it's Ok quality. I'm not picky but it's tasty and appropriately Mexican. The drinks taste good. But there's a complex schedule of what food and drinks are available where, and we had a way of always finding ourselves in the wrong place for what we wanted, and in some cases with no food at all. For example, at 5:30pm no food can be had at the beach club! There are three bars at the hotel but at most one is open at any time. Inevitably, there are long lines for food and drink and that serves to ration your access. Towels: there is a towel accounting system. But to get and return towels you're often using the front desk, which is understaffed and usually dealing with a complicated check-in. At the beach club towel people disappear at inopportune times. Again, long lines for a very simple task. Shade: In the middle of the day there is no shade to be had at any of the pools or on the beach. At the beach club, there are some umbrellas but those are claimed early. I learned to show up a couple of hours before my family to await an umbrella to be free. Staff said there were no extras. Just buying 10 or so more umbrellas would greatly improve the experience. Or just build some shade! Internet: It's 2022 and wifi doesn't work in the rooms at all. In the lobbies, it works maybe 60% of the time. Staff were indifferent to my complaints. Bandwidth is terrible: to download a movie for the plane took a couple of hours sitting in the lobby.

DISCRIMINATORY AND VIOLANT ENVIRONMENT

I called a business friend to meet her at the hotel Aldea Bazar reception, in Puerto Escondido. I was there with my two minor girls. My friend arrived and I took her to a table wick a few feet from the reception desk. The manager who refused to give me her name, out of the blue, stopped and yelled at my friend telling her that she had to pay $200 to seat at that table. She told her that she was very old and dirty and that she was calling the police on her if my friend did not remove herself from the premises. I was shocked. My two little girls started to cry because the manager was yelling like nuts. I gently asked my friend to leave and the manager refused to apologize or talk about it.

The Villa Mozart is a small and peaceful hotel comprising two apartments, four ground floor studios and two bungalows, each with its own unique and artistic touch. The apartments and the bungalows have good cooking facilities. The hotel, only two minutes from the Pacific Ocean, has a beautiful tropical garden, very appropriately named Macondo. There are many good quality places to eat just seconds away from the hotel. The Villa Mozart offers wireless access to internet.

Great Spot in PE

Reviewed By R1370LPmikea

Set in a beautiful jungle-like garden, which allows for nice privacy during the morning cafe hours. There is a lot of love and attention to detail put in by the owner and staff, with artistic touches everywhere. Our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and we had a beautiful outdoor kitchenette which came in very handy and had almost everything we needed. The only reason I dont give 5 stars here is because we found it hard to get good sleep. Our room had open-air (screened) windows to allow the cool air in at night (no AC) which was great, but it also meant we could hear any sound happening on the grounds. In particular there are workers watering plants, talking etc at 4AM, and then cafe getting ready to open from like 6:30/7AM on. All totally understandable but we could not close our windows to block it out. So that would be my only complaint. Wi-Fi was barely usable, but honestly youre in PE, you dont need it ! Generally it was very quiet and peaceful. Its in a great location to the beaches and restaurants/cafes/shops. Every day it was a pleasure to stroll through the garden on the way to our room.
