San Lorenzo B&B

Family run B&B in apartment

Reviewed By Mike B

Like a lot of visitors, this was a convenient location, for us roughly half way between our previous destination, Lerici, and our next destination Pompeii. It is just off the Autostrada, but you need to factor in the possibility of getting lost. Download an offline copy of any directions given, as once you start to go wrong phone signal is patchy. The car's GPS got us to Orte but then we struggled! For future visitors: Once off the Autostrada stay on the SP59 for a short distance then turn left onto the SP84. After a kilometre look out for a sign BB La Locanda. I have uploaded a photo of this. Turn right. It's about a kilometre climb up a dirt track. Not a lot to add to other visitor comments. Daria was very helpful and friendly, as much as I could understand with my schoolboy Italian. Her husband (?) was in the pool cleaning it, and their daughter had a swim while we were sitting on the patio. Although our ground floor apartment was a good size and self-contained you did have the feeling we were guests in someone's home - which of course we were. Breakfast was good enough for us - don't expect cheese or meats. It's what's in the fridge and worktop on arrival, plus some very nice croissants & pastries delivered outside your door in the morning. The owners only speak Italian, and if they read and translate this I recommend they provide a simple welcome sheet in English, French covering wifi, breakfast, time of check out, etc. With regard to local sights, a reviewer asked why you would not visit the subterranean tunnels while in Orte. We would have liked to do so but they are only open certain days, and then by booking in advance. There is a website that can be googled. Amelia is a nearby town worth a visit with a walled centre. _________________________________

Laid back and beautiful

This was a welcomed quiet respite while on our trip to Italy. Having been in Rome for 3-4 days, we really needed the peacefulness this wonderful place brought. The dinner is a must have. We did the 49Eu meal each and had so much food we didn't know what to do with it all... well we ate it but... you know.. ! The wine was fantastic. The bottle they gave us with dinner is a $70 bottle here in PA. Accommodations were fine. We had a room with 2 beds and we were both comfortable. The bathroom was fantastic but you need to be a little careful coming out of the shower as you have 2 steps to descend once you exit it. It was a nice stay! Highly recommend.

Agriturismo La Vecchia Fattoria

Located on the secondary road to Amelia, on the borderline between Umbria and Latium, "La vecchia fattoria" is an ideal place of peace and relax. The agrotourism overlooks a valley of olive trees, and from the farmhouse you can catch downstream our beautiful, natural pool, surrounded by the green Tiber countryside. Corners of unespected suggestion hide away in the spaces crowning our hill, where you can allow yourself a break enclosed by olive trees, aromatic herbs, vineyards and soft fruits.

Peaceful agriturismo with nice rooms, great views and excellent food.

We stayed in the Apartment Red and Apartment Brown during our one week stay at Agriturismo Vecchio Fattoria. Apartment Red is a spacious 1 bedroom (double + single) with a separate kitchen, dining and living area (with pull out futon), large bathroom and large terrace overlooking the pool. Apartment Brown has 2 large bedrooms with 2 bathrooms (1 en suite), small kitchen area, and small terrace. Marco and his staff were gracious and helpful throughout our stay. This agriturismo offers an excellent and varied lunch and dinner menu, with a small breakfast buffet offering a selection of fruit, cakes, pastries and preserves. Coffee and tea were available throughout the day. The antipasti, pastas, and grilled meats (many with fresh mushrooms or truffles) were all excellent, as was the small wine selection. We loved the large pool overlooking the valley, with a good choice of chairs and loungers (some with shade), and our kids loved the daily stroll to visit the farm animals (chickens, ducks, geese, donkeys and goats). The location is less than a 90 minute drive from Rome, and an excellent base from which to explore the sights of Lazio and Umbria, including the nearby hill town of Orte, the Roman ruins and papal palace of Viterbo, the 500 year-old parco dei mostri (monster park) at Bomarzo, the stunning Umbrian hill town of Todi, and the Umbrian cultural and wine centers of Montefalco and Orvietto.

Lovely hotel and staff but.....

Reviewed By Simon F

I know the city of Orte well and I have visited many times on my way north or south thro Italy, as there is a bar, a fuel station and these hotels about 2 minutes from the motorway junction. As my usual hotel was closed last Saturday I called into the Aquila and took a room. I know the place as I had eaten here once before so I had no qualms, I remember that the food was excellent last time. The room was lovely and the price too (room and breakfast 70 Euro) so I settled in and then headed down to the bar for a beer before dinner. I moved in to the dining room at about 7pm when it opened and I ordered a spaghetti carbonara, pasta with a lovely egg and bacon sauce just right for the cold weather outside. The pasta arrived and I tucked in as I was hungry! All went well for the first half of the meal but then disaster struck: before I was able to move to the bathroom, I began throwing up very violently directly into my serviette and then all over the dining table, until my stomach was truly empty!!! This was I think the first time in my life that I had ever reacted so violently to food and I quickly apologised and headed to my room for a shower and to change my clothes. I went to bed feeling weak. The real treat was in store the next morning when I went to pay my bill. The lady was not in the hotel the previous evening as far as I know. Well, firstly I paid for the room, fine. When she then asked me to pay for the meal I pointed out that I had "returned" the meal so er surely not?? She coldly accused me of not telling them obout my allergies (but I have none) and then she told me "but we have had to throw away the table cloth". So she knew very well!!! She then charged me for the beer. Amazing experience. This lady was not only heartless and cynical but also very unprofessional, perhaps an apology may have been in order?? She also said that I should have made my claim the previous evening, I pointed out that I had!!!! NEVER again for me.

Save your time, money and nerves - avoid

Reviewed By AyuM_12

[Summary: avoid, spend your money and time somewhere else, save yourself stress] I can see that my sister's review was graced with the following response from the host: "returned the money with no regret, as your behaviour was insulting the philosophy and the way of living at Casale Hortensiae". But before I summarise the "philosophy and the way of living" let's make something really clear: Our horrible stay was not *refunded*. We simply got back money for the part of the stay we have not used (as we made full payment in advance, weeks before our stay). We fully paid, with money and stress, for our time in C. H. If you want to say you refunded anything, feel free to make the transfer - you know the details. Now, let's get back to "philosophies and ways" of Casale Hortensiae. This is what we observed. CASALE HORTENSIAE IS YOUR KIND OF PLACE IF YOU ENJOY: - BEING SHOUTED AT by the host for no reason. The host must have been excelling the skill for a while now and misses no chance to practice, as besides of me, my sister, and my mum (who as heart condition of which the host was aware of) also the husband and the son were the targets. - DOG FAECES in the eating and playing area outdoors. Of course, having dogs (and the dogs were cute, we loved them!) means they eat, digest and get rid of what's not digested - and that's completely natural and obvious. But not cleaning after the dog has had his "business" near dinning table for the whole day is a questionable philosophy for health and aesthetic reasons. Even more, that we requested to provided some tool to clean it ourselves and we were ignored. - HAVING YOUR 2YO DAUGHTER ELECTROCUTED BY ELECTRIC FENCE you were not told about. We were informed about the hazardous fence only after my niece was unlucky to touch it and get electrocuted. - GETTING YOUR CHILDREN STRESSED AND ANXIOUS. Host's (lack of) communication skills and hostility resulted in my 8 yo daughter crying on the nights of shouting and bullying communication. - BEING GIVEN CHILD'S ROOM WITH BUNK BED that an adult can't sleep on (size) and child can't sleep on (on top) as it's wobbly and there are no barriers. The room we got is nowhere in the pictures of the place (it's small, with o air, and looks as if a child left it for a month, so unwanted family member can be cramped in until they don't bother you any more). Saying this is misleading marketing and overcharging for poor service is the softest way to summarise business practices we observed. - BEING BOSSED AROUND JUST SO YOU DON'T FEEL TOO COMFORTABLE - one day we saw the entrance door locked, so we have to go through kitchen. Supposedly to keep the house cool, but it's illogical as using kitchen door makes no difference. Stopping a wet child (in dry slippers and wrapped in towel) from coming inside the house to dry after using the swimming pool is another example of annoying clients. - MAKING ARRANGEMENTS THAT ARE LATER NOT HONOURED. Time of meals, what is served, etc. can be agreed in advance but it's either not respected or frowned upon (and shouted about). - BEING ENTANGLED IN HOSE used for cleaning the pool. Two days in a row I was the one to remove pool cleaning robot and hose that goes with it from swimming area. - DEALING WITH SELF-ABSORBED AND SELF-OBSESSED individual. We appreciate kindness from the host's husband and efforts made by her employee/not-employee (see further). We even feel sorry for them, as they were openly sorry and apologetic for the host's behaviour. - MAKING ARRANGEMENTS WITH AN EMPLOYEE WHO TURNS OUT TO NOT BE EMPLOYEE AND NOT REPRESENT THE HOST. If you consider the person presented to you by the host as someone to deal with you as being your partner in discussions you are naive (in this case). After making arrangements with the employee, we were shouted at for making arrangements with her as she apparently does not represent the owner and is not an employee (yes, we are confused too). - LEAVING YOUR COMMUNICATION UNANSWERED. Especially the one concerning refund. We were answered only after we requested the employee/ not employee for host's husband's number. Even if returning money (NOT "refund"!!!) was with no regret, it was with hesitation and after numerous reminders sent. - HAVING YOUR ITEMS IN THE FRIDGE MOVED AND REARRANGED every day. Since we travelled from afar, we had some food items for travel (to get there and for onward travel) with us. Some of them required fridge. We made sure before coming that there is a fridge we can use and it won't be a problem. We were assured we can use the fridge. Surprisingly, everything we put in the fridge was moved the next day. We were not requested to move it. We were not informed of it. They were simply moved (within the fridge). There was no logic to it, as the space we had our stuff moved from was empty afterwards. This happened again at least once. I'm sure I forgot some minor ways of living (oh, I know - dirty napkins!) or less evident philosophies, but I think you get the idea. And in that respect, we can only thank for noticing, we are against such "philosophy and ways". We have experienced it, we have shared our first-hand report. We truly hope that our horrible experience will prevent you from ruining your holidays. There are nice places around, stay there, spend your money with people who are genuinely welcoming, not with someone who mistakes hospitality and hostility.
