The Researchers Rest

The Researchers Rest was built in 1991 to house the various researchers when they would come in from the Bush. At the time the house was built in a quiet coffee farm, but over the years the city has grown around the property, which still maintains a beautiful garden with a handful of coffee trees. The five bedroom property has three in-suite rooms and two rooms that have shared facilities. The sitting room provides an extensive library and the walls are decorated with photographs taken by the many world renowned photographers and researchers that still stay at the Researchers Rest. But one can’t argue that the most memorable aspect of a stay is the incredible fresh dishes prepared by Eddie, who has 25 years of experience.

It really is coming home

Reviewed By JuliaHubbel

My first stay at Researcher's was in 2013 when I climbed Kilimanjaro.Since then I have come back many times, and each time it gets better. That's because the steady staff, familiar faces and rich history of the place blend with dense foliage, which creates a bird-filled, wonderful oasis in bustling Arusha. At the end of a bumpy, rocky road, you turn into this guest house made from a gracious home built by two English women. Their love is throughout the brick and mortar. Eddie, the chef and manager, is a superb cook, and deserves a five star rating for his quality food and caring manner. Joseph, Helen and the rest of the staff (including ancient George, the Rhodesian Ridgeback) all make coming back here regularly one of the great pleasures of coming to Tanzania.

After a long trip from Canada, I felt so pampered during my stay at the African Tulip. My room was well appointed, clean and comfortable with a kettle, coffee and tea and super comfortable bed. There was even a water cooler, so I had lots of cool, fresh and safe drinking water right in my room. The facilities were lovely and the staff outstanding. I'll be back!

Mount Meru Game Lodge

Set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings, the Mount Meru Game Lodge is nestled between the Usa river and the sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to water buffalo, birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. Conveniently located just 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), the lodge is an ideal starting point for your safari. The lodge & sanctuary date back to 1959 when Dr. Von Nagy bought the property as a family home. The main building dates back to the 1930's and was originally the farm manager's house. In the first half of the 1900's most of the area on the southern slopes of Mount Meru were coffee plantations. Dr. Von Nagy's was passionate about animals and he quickly turned his family home into an animal sanctuary and orphanage. He setup the Mount Meru Wildlife Reserve in order to protect the wildlife on Mount Meru, what is now part of Arusha National Park. He also helped the government to establish the Wildlife Collage and used his animal sanctuary and orphanage as a training facility for the students. His home and passion attracted visitors from far and wide, rooms were added to accommodate his visitors and the lodge was born. The lodge is one of the oldest lodges in northern Tanzania. Great effort has been made to keep the lodge as original as possible while at the same time offering some of the modern day comforts. The lodge has grown in popularity over the years and our visitors have included numerous presidents as well as members of European Royal families. When Dr. Von Nagy retired in the 1980’s, the animal orphanage stopped taking on orphaned animals. The Mount Meru Game lodge remains in family hands till today and the family look forward to offering you a memorable experience during your stay in Arusha.

Fantastic place to stay when you’re launching your Tanzania vacation!

My wife and I stayed here as our starting-point and gateway into the Tanzania parks; Mount Meru Lodge was amazing… the hospitality was fantastic, from the time we checked in to the time we checked out, the food was amazing, the accommodations were more than adequate… and breakfast starts with the Water Buffalos, Zebras & Zonkeys coming close into the property so as to properly greet all of the residents. Highly recommended, especially for those that need that day or two of adjustment before venturing into Tarangire, NgoroNgoro and Serengeti.

Warm, Wonderful African Lodge

Reviewed By CMLCH

We stayed 3 nights at the lodge. It's an oasis, filled with a beautiful garden, flowers, turtles, palms and a calm, relaxing pool. The lodge is embedded in a busy town - you hear the sounds around you day and night. The staff are very attentive, helpful and warm-hearted. We arrived late at night but felt welcome from the moment we got picked up at the airport by our guide. He took us on a safari the next day and it was wonderful. He was vey knowledgeable, had a great sense of humor but also knew when we just wanted to be quiet and enjoy the amazing animals. It was nice to see that the lodge was part of a foundation and that it was run by local people. We got some great "shopping ideas" from Sandra - we were 4 women - and found some beautiful treasures to bring home. Next time I think I would do more safaris but it was also relaxing to just hang out, eat and enjoy the garden and pool. We also were happy that it was affordable and not over the top prices. We will return again and would recommend it for anyone wanting to explore the area. Thank you!

Welcoming and super rooms

Reviewed By SheilaM1097

We had one double room and then a double and 2 singles with a connecting door. The rooms were lovely, the nets pretty good. Only issue that we had was with the shower tiles being rather slippery. Evening meal was 3 courses and we needed to select our options before we went to our room. The only issue that I had was that the 3 course meal was more than I could eat as well as the 2 children with us. With hindsite we could've gone for 2 meals less - a saving of 18$ on each meal The pool was closed when we arrived and didn't open till later than the sign said [but we are used to Tanzanian timings!] A lovely little pool
