The 10 best Hostels hotel in Kodagu (Coorg), India

May 16, 2023 Christa Meece

The misty hills, lush teakwood and sandalwood forests, and acres of tea and coffee plantations of Kodagu are, in a word, stunning. Also known as Coorg and dubbed "The Scotland of India," Kodagu is a postcard-perfect region of scattered villages and hamlets, which are the epitome of old-world charm. Kodagu is ideal for outdoor activities such as trekking, angling and white-water rafting, and major festivals like Keil Poldu (worship of weapons), Cauvery Shankaramana (return of the river goddess) and the Huttari (harvest) festival are a huge draw.

Nestled on the hills of South Coorg, Bhagamandala is both a tourist spot as well as a place of pilgrimage. On the river bank are temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity - Shiva worshipped as Bhagandeshwara, Brahma (along with an image of Subramanya) and Mahavishnu. Talacauvery, the source of the River Cauvery, is 7 km upstream. Karnataka Hotels Bhagamandala is located on the hillslope and offers panoramic views of the delightful Coorg landscape. The hotel is a compact one with 18 double bed rooms and a vegetarian restaurant.

Capitol Village Resort

Average resort not for leisure

We stayed for 4 nights as a part of group of about 22. Property surroundings are green with valley and a pond. Rooms less said the better. Less ventilation and in April it was very warm with no airconditioner. Keep windows open in evenings and night- you will become expert entomologist studying variety of insects. hot water for bath came at sweet bill. Sometimes water supply stopped altogether. Our group had our own food arrangements hence we had respite. If you are going for leisure I will not recommend the place. If you are nature lover and ca endure power switching, insects and all you may try

What a place! Beautifully nested amidst nature. Couldn't have picked a better place in Coorg. Pristine property, simple yet interestingly decorated especially the contrast curtains. The host, Mr. Vikram is an absolute gentleman. Took care of us from the time we stepped in. Had a wonderful time. Music, delicious food and a plenty of down time, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Definitely worth going back.

A wonderful visit, as always!

Reviewed By holidaydiaries

My husband and I have visited Chilumey homestay multiple times, together with my parents and siblings, and it has always been a treat - location in the midst of a coffee plantation is a winner, home cooked food is absolutely delicious and the hosts are warm and friendly people and have always made us feel at home. I recommend a walk through the lush coffee plantation (if you are a morning person, an early morning walk is absolutely wonderful!). There are sights within a 10-20km drive and the hosts are very helpful with recommendations and directions to get to these sights. Thank you very much for making our visits so memorable. We look forward to returning soon!

Stay away from this place. Terrible

Stayed there for a night - we had booked 2 rooms. One in the main building, and other in a villa across the street. Not a pleasant experience at all. The private balcony, is not really private. This is a part of a house converted into a hotel. The "private" balcony leads to the out side of the house. The room in the basement - can get quite claustrophobhic. In both the rooms - the fans were super noisy. Will ensure you do not get a peaceful sleep on a warm day or in the event that you need to close the windows due to generator noise all night long. The night we stayed there --- at about 10.00pm there was a power failure - they started the generator for backup - it was crazy loud and went on for the whole night and the following morning util our checkout. So loud that we just could not sleep. Asked the owner of the property to look into it -- maybe put the generator in an enclosed area to reduce the sound level. I doubt that will happen anytime soon. The bathroom in one of the room was all wet when we checked in (late in the evening) and the reason given was super lame - they had reflooring done the week before :-). Even the "only" shelf in the bathroom is broken and resting on a single screw. The sheets / bathroom linen seemed decent but we avoided it looking at the room condition. The food prepared was quite good and reasable. The manager and caretaker were helpful when it came to food and helping with queries. Getting there is a challenge and needs some off-roading to do. The last 1.5km is in a horrible condition. So if you have a small hatch, then avoid this place. Also, there are no sign boards - the owner expects them to get within a few months. You have to rely on whatsapp live location sharing and manager, Nandan's help for this. Overall, except the food (nothing out of the ordinary but simple and tasted well) there is nothing much to look forward to. Given the COVID conditions still looming aroud, this place can be avoided. They need to ensure the cleanliness is maintained. Worst still -- the manager of the hotel smokes right outside your room. Saw that for the first time and was shocked. Definitely stay far far away from this place.
