The 10 best Hostels hotel in Athens, Greece

April 28, 2023 Karren Gelb

World renowned as the cradle of democracy and with the iconic Acropolis still standing proudly at its center, Athens is at once a living history lesson and a lively modern European capital. Its character varies from the busy commercial avenues connecting its two main squares, Syntagma and Omonia, to the tight-knit alleys of the touristic old town areas of Plaka and Monastiraki. The city has a busy nightlife scene: its convivial tavernas and buzzing bars in neighborhoods such as Exarchia, Psirri and Gazi are packed and lively well into the night.

City Circus Athens

City Circus is an alternative travelers space for the restless voyager, the escape artist, the acrobat. It's in the heart of Athens, in the hip Psirri neighborhood, beside numerous eateries and watering holes and a short walk from worthwhile sites. City Circus is in a 4-story, restored early 20th century mansion, complete with fresco-ed ceilings, wrought-iron balconies and baroque tiles. We’ve dressed it up with vintage furniture, reclaimed materials, modern design elements and street art by a selection of fresh local talent.

Enjoying City Circus

Reviewed By larriji

Clean rooms, super nice staff, fun place, but the really amazing thing about City Circus is the location. You are a one minute walk to an enchanting journey through the cobblestone side-streets of Athens. I have stayed at City Circus twice now and continue to appreciate the energy the owner and staff puts into their eclectic gathering point. I now consider CC as a launching place upon arrival to Athens.

Great hotel, bad neighborhood!

Reviewed By Marisela D

The hotel is very nice and super clean, the stuff very friendly and they help with any questions. The only bad part of this hotel is the area. It is a lot of yunkies outside the sorrounder area of the hotel, doing drugs right there in front of the police station. It is also some hockers in the corner, not a very nice admosphere if you are traveling with family.

Brilliant for Solo travellers

This is the hostel to be! The location is perfect, everything in the heart of Athens is within a walkable distance. A walking tour is provided at 10am daily by the amazing Andrew, where you will be given a historical/mythical tour and advice on the best sites and quality food. I stayed in a 6 room female only dorm. Now my only negative comment is that it was freezing up there at night, however once mentioned to staff I was provided with extra blankets. My room was clean with plenty of storage space for a large backpack. Breakfast has something suitable for everyone, fruit, eggs, bread and cereal. The staff are what make this hostel unique. Walter and Costa are the barman from heaven and never fail to make happy hour enjoyable for all. Steph and her new staff member keep things going during the day, able to answer every question from recommendations etc The vibe of the hostel ultimately is what you make it but has everything for you to have a brilliant time and make loads of travel buddies. Activities are listed on the walls to inform guests. The cleaning staff are so kind and helpful! The roof top view is *chefs kisses* Cheap and cheerful! Thank you Athens Backpackers!

Great breakfast, good rooms, not accessible

Reviewed By bronwynrev

Pretty standard hostel. Breakfast is a little expensive but good (bread, tea and coffee, Greek yogurt, muesli/cereal, hard boiled eggs, cheeses and meats, tomatoes and cucumbers). The rooms have big lockers and a decent bathroom, but are a little noisy and the bunk beds are creaky/unstable. No soap in the bathrooms but relatively clean. Wifi is good. Location is excellent, being just around the corner from Monastiraki Station and across the street from the square, which has a great view of the Acropolis. You can quite easily get here from the airport via the metro. Though there's an elevator to the rooms, the laundry and storage facilities are *not* accessible. Though I don't have any mobility issues, I've been travelling long-term and my bag is over 50lbs (25kg) so it was extremely difficult going up and down a narrow spiral staircase with no railing multiple times. The laundry isn't self-serve and is a little pricey (5 euro for washing, 2 euro for drying) — and in typical European style the dryers leave your clothes soggy. If you want to do your own laundry there's a laundromat quite literally right around the corner which is slightly cheaper if you already have soap (5 euros for washing but 1 euro for drying). It's fast and their dryers work well. I stayed only two nights here but enjoyed both nights. Reception was friendly and so were my roommates. If you're travelling light and don't have mobility issues you won't have any issue here — it's a great hostel and I wish I had checked out the rooftop bar while I was there!

Buen hostel

Reviewed By dcablo

Terrible accommodation

Reviewed By suzettem705

We booked our room for 2 nights. We flew in the morning and arrived at the hostel to find that there was no one in the reception area. The information says 24hrs reception but that is not correct. There is no one to greet us or check us in. The building doesn't look to have heating. We arrived in January with 3c degrees, we were freezing waiting outside for someone to open the door. We rang the doorbell and there was no answer. We waited more than 4hr, and still no one would open. Eventually we left looking for warmth. I DO NOT recommend anyone to book here.

Poor place for unassuming people

The only positive thing is friendly staff. The location coud be convenient, but the area seems unpleasant and unsafely. In fact, it is a typical cheap wretched hostel for a 1-2 night staying. The main thing is that photos on hostelworld/booking/etc. doesn’t fit with reality. So don’t expect too much.

I visited Athens in June 2018. And used Small funny world hostel after I received a recommendation from my friend. This hostel is great and cheap about 10 minutes from Syntegma square. And from the rooftop you can see the Acropolis. The breakfast simple but delicious and volunteers have a kind of hospitality and warm welcome.

Hostel Zeus

Cheap but not cheerful.

Reviewed By markbV9108YR

For the price it is reasonable not to expect too much. But at least the place should be clean.Dust everywhere, bed bugs in the beds and no facilities at all.The communal area upstairs is falling apart with leaks and dirt everywhere. The location is brilliant and the staff generally helpful but are let down by the lack of free lockers,(you have to pay €2 per use) and by the fact that you can only lock the door from inside and they do not provide a key for everyone in the room so the room is left wide open most of the time. The complaints about noise are ridiculous as it's a hostel in a busy market area and you have to expect noise and other travellers will always make noise.Overall there are hostels for a similar price that are far better in the same area.Cleaner, more helpful, bar, working kitchen, lockers ect.
