The 10 Best Historic Sites in Bagan, Mandalay Region

September 15, 2021 Tynisha Seiler

Bagan (Burmese: ပုဂံ; MLCTS: pu.gam, IPA: [bəɡàɴ]; formerly Pagan) is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2,200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.

Absolutely loved it here - now one of our favourite ever places. Getting up at 5.30am to see the sunrise and balloons sets a wonderful tone to the day and seeing the temples - and hiring e-bikes was just wonderful - they were plenty fast enough and you are just free to go where you please, independently with just a dusty breeze upon you - worth bringing a face mask. Loved it here...

Salay House

Salay House restaurant And Salay River View Inn Dear Sir, We renovated the old trader house in Salay as an old traditional style .And we display the old furnitures and some antiques in Salay house as a living museum. Then we created the lovely garden with local flowering plants and mango trees on the bank of Ayarwaddy river. And so all the guests can enjoy their breakfast, lunch and also dinner with river view .And also the guests can enjoy the lovely sunset with some drinks. Salay River View Inn It is siturated in the same compound with river view. All the guest can take the relax and feel the pleasure with nice view, with the fresh air, amd also with the nature. We do enviromental friendly hotel and use less plastics as possible. The building was built with teak wood and volcanic. Stones, sand stones. Most of the rooms are decorated with myanmar traditional teak wood curvings and some with old furnitures. At Salay House and Salay River View Inn, you can learn, dine and stay happily.

A small boutique hotel ran by a husband and wife team, who take great care to give you the best service they can. They engage with you whenever they are around. The rooms are traditional style with lots of nice extra touches. The staff offer to spray your room every night against mosquitoes and couldn't be more helpful. We only ate in the hotel as there was nowhere else suitable locally for tourists as the hygeine standards are very low outside the hotel. The hotel was beautifully clean, there were handwashing facilities in the restaurant and in the garden should you chose to eat outside. The view over the Irrawaddy river was wonderful and particularly the sunset. The owners are currently doing up a boat so they can offer dining on the boat and expand their business and I am sure this will be worthwhile for them. We had the best room in the hotel, nearest the river upstairs at the end of the balcony. No complaints there. The food was exceptional, service wonderful, the staff even got up early (at 5.00am) on our departure day to ensure we had breakfast. Highly recommend for food, or for accommodation. We would consider returning because it was so good, but would say the only thing missing for us was a swimming pool (however small).

Shwesandaw Pagoda

The sun already started setting, we rushed to one of the taller pagodas in the area – Shwesandaw Pagoda – an imposing structure visible from far away rising from the plains of Bagan, and is very popular among tourists for sunset. Our tickets for the archaeological zone were checked here. Be careful while climbing the steep stairs to the top of the Shwesandaw temple to witness one of the popular sunsets of Bagan.

Probably my favorite temple out of all the ones I visited while in Bagan. Definitely include this one on your list of temples to see while here. Probably need a good 45 minutes for this one.

Gubyaukgyi Temple

Reviewed By dustythoughts - Manchester, United States

This stunning temple is remarkably well-preserved and very beautiful, considering it's from the 12th century. The frescoes on the wall are gorgeous and are worth visiting just for themselves, although the temple itself is also lovely. The dim interior helps provide an aura of calmness and sacredness. This temple is clearly very well-maintained with a sense of awe and love that testifies to the spirituality of the place.
