I played in the Men's Open on 4th June 2018 - what excellent value for money and what a fantastic golf course. The entry fee was £65 for a pair and everything was included in this price. No extras for 2's or nearest the pin and also a complementary halfway house was provided. All the staff where very friendly and made you feel welcome and the clubhouse facilities, including food and drink were excellent. Go and play golf there, you wont regret it.

Halifax Golf Course

'Dickodemint)..See my previous review in May 2019..my first visit to this demanding, but beautiful course and the welcoming Club House, where we hosted the first 'Lord Halifax Trophy' Event for a dear friend, who has been suffering for the past three years with Motor Neurone Disease. Now for the second visit: His 'Bestest' friend, for very many years, had the first event last year..due to Covid problems this year, was delayed, but held at this club on the 4th September 2020. The weather in September, was really good for golfing..around 17 degrees, overcast but no rain, unlike May the previous year. Clubhouse, is roomy, pre Covid, a good snooker table, closed temporarily, but a great dining room and bar areas: Excellent friendly 'Yorky' staff (I'm a Southerner) unused to friendly bar staff (!), and the prices..London, £6.50+ a pint..here, from memory, under £5.00..!! We had 17, 4 balls, starting at 9.30am, with the last around 11.30, all finishing after 3pm. Bacon Butties..absolutely first class, unlimited for participants..golfers and helpers included, with a lovely local meat pie, covered in either delicious 'Yorky' gravy or the best mushy peas you can only get in 'Yorkyland'. Staff here are efficient and friendly..food served normally varied, on this Event, a standard meal, which was hot and tasty..enjoyed by all. An excellent day, hosted by the club..anyone wanting to have a great day of golf, for a good cause, for £50.00, including tasty food, see the Steward at the Club..without exception, all enjoyed the day and we might have yo hire two Golf Clubs to host the event in 2021..given the interest expressed by golfers for next year and friends. A grand total for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, who disgustingly, receive no Government funding and the local Overgate Hospice, raised a sum of over £7,500.00 for these charities..Brilliant. This Course, is really well kept and unusual, testing, but not too hard for any golfer, novice or low handicap. Beautiful panoramic views..19th hole is one to be savored, slowly, over a grand meal and a few 'Yorkshire' ales.

This place is a TRACK! Clubhouse is beautiful, the welcome is top notch, the course is one of the best around certainly deserves its place in the top 100. It will keep you guessing all the way round very difficult but absolutely fair. Green complex’s are tough local knowledge or at least playing it a few times would benefit you massively there also lightning fast but such a true roll. I’ve been lucky enough to play this a couple of times I will definitely be returning next year truly wonderful place to be. Thank you Alwoodley

Moortown Golf Club

Founded in 1909, Moortown was designed by the World famous golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National, Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne and many other championship courses throughout the world. Well-known around the World as the host of the first Ryder Cup match on British soil, in 1929, Moortown is regarded by many as one of the Country’s finest inland golf courses. Over the past Century the Club has hosted many professional and amateur tournaments with winners that include Sir Nick Faldo, Bernard Gallagher and Sir Michael Bonallack, former Captain of the R & A. Course The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined they meetings, was elected a Vice-President in 1909, and in 1913 he was Captain. As the Club leased more land, and the holes re-shaped, he continued as constructional adviser and Vice-President. deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens. Dr MacKenzie often chaired many of the early meetings, was elected a Vice President in 1909, and in 1913 he was Captain. As the Club leased more land, and the holes re-shaped, he continued as constructional advisor and Vice-President. Signature hole 10th – ‘Gibraltar’. MacKenzie used a rocky slope to construct a short hole with contours which would deflect the imperfectly struck shot into an army of bunkers scooped out of the edges of the putting surface. With a number of different pin positions, playing strategy varies daily.

First class course in excellent condition considering all the rain we have had recently. Some truly memorable golf holes, the 18th is a great par 4. Pure nostalgia in the clubhouse with memorabilia from the Ryder Cup. Highly recommended!
