If you want a truly local and contemporary Lao experience in Vientiane visit the gallery and experience Khang designs. The Phaeng Mai Gallery and Khang design showroom is a small local textile manufacturer using all traditional weaving methods. The designs are a mix of traditional and contemporary with scarves, dresses and jackets all quite reasonably priced given they are all hand woven and unique designs. It is a little away from the main downtown area in Vientiane but easy to reach by taxi or tuk tuk. Worth a visit to purchase something completely unique with fresh new designs. Also at the same location Vina Art to Wear for made to measure designs if you have some time. And great businesses run by local women.

Celadon - The Essence of Luang Prabang

Reviewed By milliesmum2016 - Christchurch, New Zealand

This is the lovliest shop, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's elegant. It's stock is elegant, the shop itself is elegantly subdued and airy. It's a change from the 'night market' style shopping which is signature Luang Prabang. Secondly, its in a pretty part of town, almost at the tip of the peninsula. Actually, if you're looking for higher end shopping then this is possibly the area for you. Thiedly and most worthy, I guess, is that the purpose of celadon is to support and assist buddhist education and one of the aims of that is to teach children the traditional artisanal skills and crafts so that these do not die out. It's a lovely place to buy gifts or souvenirs and everything is very carefully and prettily packaged. I bought a charming celadon green ceramic elephant, now gracing my travel bookshelf, having made it safely home by virtue of the care with which it was packed.
