The 10 Best Geologic Formations in Transylvania, Romania

September 30, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Transylvania is a historical region in today's central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

Buffogo Swamp

We did the whole Stinky Mountain circuit: Stinky Cave, Bird Cemetery, Death Cave, and Buffogo Swamp. It is a fairy tale landscape. We went in winter, so everything was covered in snow, but I am sure it is even more beautiful in summer time. The spring waters which permanently makes bubbles and never freezes is very cool

Mohos Peat-Bog

Reviewed By edysch - Bistrita, Romania

This Peat-Bog was formed on top of a former crater lake, offering an almost outlandish landscape, and harboring a handful of very interesting plants. Access is covered by the parking fee at the entrance and includes a guided tour, which starts every hour at .15 min. Once here, one should also visit its smaller twin, the neighboring St.-Ana crater lake.

La Prapastii Zarnesti

Reviewed By Jazzumbo - Campulung, Romania

Part of the hike from Zarnesti to Curmatura chalet, Zarnesti gorges (Prapastiile Zarnesti) are quite spectacular. They tend to be very busy over the weekends, especially during summertime. The trail follows the stream through the gorges for a few kilometres. It's a good activity for a hot summer day, as the trail is shaded by tall rocks. During summertime, the hikers need to pay an entrance fee (5 lei, about 1 Euro).

Bicaz Canyon

Wish I had more time to spend there and admire the canyon and be better equipped for that place so we can walk on foot for awhile, not just stop then continue. We travel East to West in the middle of the day. If you like sunrise or sunset you should try to be there for those, I'm sure it will be spectacular. .
