The 10 Best Gear Rentals in Lake District, England

August 2, 2021 Ying Subia

Cumbria's valleys and fells (as the low mountains are known) are home to idyllic villages, high moorlands and picturesque lakes. Literary buffs will enjoy Wordsworth's Dove Cottage (go in March to see daffodils), and if you've got kids in tow, visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Or just enjoy a leisurely drive through beautiful scenery.

This is a really good bike hire shop, with all bike options available for everyone, whether electric or more traditional bikes. The pre-booking works well via the web, and I just turned up, brought some of my own clipless pedals with me, and off I went. The guys helped me check my proposed route, and then I went up and around Skiddaw on a bike! The beauty of an ebike, is you will often end up doing far more than you would have done on a normal bike, so give it a go, and you will be greatly surprised what you can achieve!

Great shop, full of all sorts of useful bike bits from helmets to handle bars. We hired a few electric bikes for the afternoon to ride round Derwent water, the bikes were so fun and easy to use. We were given clear instructions on how to use them as it was our first time trying electric. We were provided with a map and Brian talked us through the best routes and noted a good place to stop for food and drink and a point of interest along the way. The routes were lovely; through the mountains with amazing views. Electric bikes are definitely a great way to experience the lake district.

We stayed at the Cycle Barn for the second year running. It's an excellent place to stay for a large family group. The facilities (bedrooms, toilets, showers, kitchen and dining/lounge area) are very good and it's spotlessly clean. Although we haven't stayed as cyclists, it's obviously a very well designed hostel as a cycling base or as a place of rest for touring cyclists with well-designed outdoor bike-washing space and a good drying room for wet gear. It's also warm, cosy and extremely well maintained. The kitchen is very well equipped with good quality pots, pans, cutlery, crockery glassware, cafetieres etc - enough to cater for all four rooms / fourteen guests. Outside there are several benches including a seating area around a fire pit. Bags of logs are available for a small (cost-covering) charge for both the fire pit and the indoor wood-burner. Steph is an excellent host. The nearest pub, The Derby Arms, is about 25 minutes' walk. It serves very good traditional pub food and has a good range of ales and gins, among everything else you'd expect. There are good local walks in what is very much an unspoilt area of the Lake District.
