It is 7 years since we had the best memories of our life staying here and being fortunate to get to know Claudia Rudy and wee Gabrielle (who took an instant like to my pearl necklace) and we enjoyed watching him aged under 2 playing football at midnight with Rudy. How many children do they have now? It is on our bucket list to come back from NZ one day.

My friend and I did the olive picking experience. We were taught about growing olives and shown how they are picked, then we helped pick the olive from a tree they picked out for us. Appreciate the work and skill that goes into growing, harvesting and processing olives into extra virgin olive oil that is the purest and most delicious olive oil you will ever taste. Fabio, one of the family that owns the farm, and Luca our guide, made the experience the best time we had in Italy. We had a lovely lunch on the farm on a beautiful sunny warm day. We ordered some of the oil that would be made with the olives that we helped pick. It came today and we are enjoying the experience all over again. We have already decided we want to go back again! Please don't miss this experience it is the best time you will have!!!

We went on the morning tour which finishes with a generous lunch accompanied by home produced wine. The Azenda La Masseria has been owned and run by the same family for some 5 generations. The property and its lemon and olive groves are located on the steep western slopes of the Sorrento Peninsula. Our tour was led by one of the sons who spoke perfect English. Hugely informative - for example few of us, if any, knew that lemon trees are not actually grown from lemon seeds, but grafted on to a bitter orange tree root stock. This appears to be the norm for most citrus fruit-bearing trees. The olive oil from the Azienda is delicious. We sampled the extra virgin and were then offered the Lemon and Orange extra virgin oils. Wow !!! Superb hit of both lemon and orange in both of our two samples. The oil making process as well as that for making Limoncello were explained in detail. The tour concludes with a generous lunch accompanied by home produced wine ... and of course the Limoncello to end. Special dietary needs are catered for. Definitely recommend this informative diversion to those visiting this region of Italy.

How can you visit the heart of the Sorrentine Peninsula and not take a food tour? We couldn’t. In the span of 4 hours, we visited lemon and olive groves (enjoyed morning limoncello!), watched fresh cheese made in front of our eyes (OMG, fresh ricotta with apricot/plum preserves - new favorite), and make our own pizza (complete with hostess/guide Claudia taking slo-mo videos of our bumbling efforts). Speaking of Claudia, she informed and entertained with fun unmatched by any other excursion we had on our three-week Italian trip. Thank you Claudia for....well....just being YOU! And bravo/well done to the ‘sexy, single Cheese Man with hot hands’!!

We had a wonderful tour with Roberta this morning. She was lovely and enthusiastic about the traditional Parmigiano Reggiano cheese-making process.
