The 10 Best Educational sites in Yorkshire, England

December 17, 2021 Darleen Reid

Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər, -ʃɪər/; abbreviated Yorks), formally known as the County of York, is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.

Saint Wilfrid's Church

Visit the only Grade 1 listed building in the heart of Harrogate. Saint Wilfrid's church was designed by the famous architect Temple Moore in the early 1900's. The church is very striking architecturally, with some excellent examples of stained glass, a stunning parish hall with an unusual "lamella" ceiling, cloisters and free car parking. St Wilfrid's is open every day for visits and services.

We've lost count of how many visits we have made to Grimm & Co, but every visit has been fantastic. We have been to short workshops lasting just half an hour, or to longer workshops taking two hours or more, and all of them have been amazing. We've been on monster hunts, written songs, and made potions, but you don't have to go on a workshop to have a great time here. Even when we just call in to browse, we've written letters to magical creatures and received replies about a week later (after the post owls have braved dragons, Godzilla, and even Cthulhu and the Wendigo to deliver our post). We've chosen books from the forgotten library, we've voted for our favourite something in the weekly voting ballot - most recently Ariel or Princess Jasmine, but also Star Wars or Star Trek, Marvel or DC, Dragons or Unicorns, and many more. We've searched for fairy doors and tiny elf books, we've used the magical ability scales to find out what sort of magical creature we might be, and we've done quite well in the Lucky or Unlucky Dip. We've bought potions and lotions from the shop, all of which are great quality, and the Shop Elves are the friendliest and most helpful magical beings we've ever met, and they are wonderful with mortal visitors of any age. My son takes things to show them every time we visit and the Shop Elves always take the time to look at them and talk to him, and the workshops have improved his confidence. He asks to visit the shop even when no events are running just because he loves it there. We cannot recommend Grimm & Co enough and since we were lucky enough to discover it last summer (apparently it's not always visible to mortals) we have visited often enough to be feel like we are visiting good friends. We travel from Doncaster just to visit the shop but just along the road is Clifton Park and the Museum so Grimm & Co can easily be part of a longer day out but is well worth a special visit on it's own merit. For a visit without a workshop an hour is good but the longer workshops are well worth attending too, and we have so much fun we can easily spend over an hour looking around at the forgotten library and just having fun before we even start shopping. The workshops are great, a lot of time and effort is put into them, and theres the added excitement of the secret door and the beanstalk!

Allerton Waste Recovery Park

Allerton Waste Recovery Park brings together state-of-the-art technologies to make the most of rubbish from homes in York and North Yorkshire. The new facility is reducing the amount of household waste going to landfill in the county by 90%. Together, the technologies are increasing the amount of recyclable materials which are removed from the waste stream.

Excellent visitor centre & group leader 'Emily'. information telling us about recycling correctly, followed by visiting viewing galleries around Waste Recovery Plant (slightly smelly at times) to see our North Yorkshire bin waste being processed for recovery or incineration into energy. Amazing process. My skeptical mind hopes that this facility maintains efficiency in future. Our rubbish!?! Good car park/toilets at visitor centre + wheelchair access, but stairways on plant.

We visited as part of an open day for the medical school which has a very good reputation. We were initially based in the students union (the best in the uk apparently) which are next to a range of shops. The campus is spread over a large area as most universities seem to be. It would have been nice to see the older buildings but there was a lot to cram in to a few hours.

Dunndeniably the BEST night in Leeds. As a former Leeds Uni student, I spent many a night singing, dancing and drinking at Fruity Friday! With 3 rooms to pick from, my friends and I were never short of choice, and often found ourselves singing the night away to classics in Stylus, such as “Dunn’t stop me now!”, “Dunn’t you want me Baby!” and my personal favourite, the Grease Megamix featuring Sandy and Dunny (as the boys used to call me in the day!). Excellently priced drinks guaranteed to keep the spirits high all night long - would recommend the Orange VK’s for those with a sweet tooth. All in all, a superb evening that never fails to live up to expectation. Does it get any better? I Dunn’t think so!!!

Went here with two young grandchildren and we were very impressed. Bigger than i thought it would be for the price. The children loved it and we spent just under 2 hours. Can feed animals too. Little cafe too. But we didn't use that. Lots of hand wash all over. Will go again.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

The 24 acre Meanwood Valley Urban Farm has a variety of farm animals including alpacas, goats, sheep, pigs, hens, donkeys, and ducks. There are woodland walks, and a longer walk through our 5 acre coppice, where a variety of wildlife can be seen if you are very quiet. There is a small playground for children under 12 and you may want to take a break at the independently run Hungry Hedgehog Cafe which offers vegetarian options and facilities for warming baby food.We have our own car park and there is a Farm Shop with toys, gifts, plants and produce grown on the farm and fresh farm eggs.

We've been going to the farm for years as a couple, especially in the spring to see the piglets ????, so I was very excited to take our little boy down when it opened after lockdown. I went down with a friend and our babies last week, one in a baby carrier and the other in a pram. He's only a baby so didn't really have a clue what was going on but was pretty transfixed with the alpacas! For a little farm there are lots of animals to see, we spotted pigs, cows, sheep, goats, ducks, chickens and the aforementioned alpacas. We've definitely seen rabbits and Guinea pigs before too. There's also a huge market garden and lots of plants and a pond to enjoy. There's a lovely farm shop (currently closed I think due to Covid) and a little cafe. We had a bite to eat at the cafe and a coffee each which was very welcome. It's such good value - £2 for adults and 50p for children over 2, under 2s are free. We got a family membership which is £25 for the year as we only live up the road and will go loads I'm sure. I have to say I'm really surprised by the negative reviews comparing it to somewhere like Cannon Hall in terms of activities and scale. If you're looking for outdoor playgrounds, tractor rides etc. then it might not be for you and you might be better visiting a commercial enterprise like Cannon Hall. This isn't a diss of Cannon Hall at all, I've been before with friends and their children and it's great, it's also £8 per adult and £8 per child over 2, so £34 per family plus parking charges. Meanwood would be £5 for a family and is a charity so it's a very different proposition. If you're looking for a little stroll, some plants and animals to entertain little ones for a couple of hours and a nice cuppa at the end then it's a fantastic place to visit and excellent value for money.
