We visited here as part of a day tour and had a guided hike. We did not see any exciting large wildlife, but did see where Tapirs had barreled through the brush. We got to see some cool insects, a couple of short nosed green vine snakes and variety of the less spectacular birds. The star of the show was the waterfall where we got our Christmas Card shot! It takes at least minimal mobility as the drop to the viewing platform is 253 steps down and then 253 steps back up. The view was more than worth it. We had a very considerate guide that also educated us in the flora that we were walking through and patiently answered all our questions.

Sugar cane, Chocolate and coffee Tour The first trapiche (sugarmill) came to Monteverde in 1948 when Mr. Higinio Santamaría (grandfather of the present owner), moved from San Ramon of Alajuela to Monteverde. The journey was done with oxen carts, to thearea we know now as Santa Elena and lasted about 15 days, then it was installed and started working regularly. Approximately 13 years after the arrival of the family to Monteverde, Mr. Juan Santamaría Campos (father of the present owner) creates a partnership buying a diesel-powered mill. The idea of turning it in to an agro-tourism farm, was created with the aim of showing to visitors a representative part of Costa Rican culture where they can appreciate the process of sugar by the old way making brown sugar (tapa de dulce) and processing of fresh coffee cultivation in educational and cultural tour, which began on 2005.

We had a great time on our tour with Alexander. Educational, fun, great exercise, and an exciting way to see San Jose. From my initial phone call, Roberto was very accommodating for us on short notice, and arranged a tour for our time schedule. We really enjoyed the stop at cafe machado, too, for a local, expert coffee experience. Highly recommended for an active tour.

We had limited time in San Jose but this tour was a great way to explore and taste the city. Love that it is locally owned and operated, and I can tell that Erik really cares about his business and customs. Erik is a knowledgeable and professional guide, he was great at communicating by email and WhatsApp and went out of his way to give us a private tour due to COVID concerns. He was also really understanding and accommodating when we were running more than a little late due to long lines at customs. I would classify this as more of a cultural tour with a walk through the markets as opposed to a true food tour, but we were able to purchase some amazing coffee and the restaurant at the end was delicious!

Picked us up at 5:40 A and served us a sorry ham sandwich at boarding around 8:30 what a terrible start of the day because of the early pickup we had no access to coffee or breakfast and it was only ham option for the morning. Our day went on without breakfast. Lunch served on the beach was limited and had no deserts or coffee afterward as this was offered with another tour company I went for the same trip two years ago.

It’s an outdoor hiking tour through the rain forest with the help of a naturalistic guide to look for the sloths in the wild. We’ll be finding an average of four to six sloths in the area. We have about 2 miles trails with a rich biodiversity so we also be able to appreciate some birds, frogs, insects and other wildlife around. This adventure takes almost two hours to be done but it’s a gentile hike in a flat land 30 acres property. The trails are mostly under shade with some open areas so you only we’ll need some bug spray.

Inclusions: Driver/guide, Professional guide

We very much enjoyed our morning spent on the volunteer tour. We loved seeing the animals up close and learning about their rehabilitation, which sometimes takes many years. It was fun to prepare the food and watch them eat. We also enjoyed the wild animals about, including herons, a caiman, a white-faced monkey who followed us around in the trees above and a sloth. Be sure to book tickets in advance and prepare for hefty taxi cost ($100 round trip for us just outside of Fortuna). Highly recommend!
