October 6, 2021 Lean Nau

Seoul is the business and cultural hub of South Korea, where skyscrapers tower over Buddhist temples. Take it all in from the N Seoul Tower, built atop a peak in Namsan Park. The teahouses and shops of Insadong give you a taste of Korean flavor, which you can further experience with a visit to the grounds and museums of Gyeongbokgung. UNESCO World Heritage Site Changdeokgung Palace is a fine example of authentic ancient architecture.

I went with my family (my sister and I were well into our careers as professionals and my parents wanted to do trips as a family) and we were delighted at the insights that Ellie provided our family about the stories and tips behind the Korean food we enjoy at home as well as advice on making the dishes ourselves. There is much more than only the ingredients list and basic instructions and she cooks along side with you showing you nuanced things along the way. We learned how to cook 3 dishes a piece and she went through everything with us and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We weren't rushed at all (we actually ended up spending almost 6 hours there all in all) and it was a very friendly experience. I wish her all the luck in her move (she had mentioned she's planning on moving locations soon) and am defiantly going to come back if I'm in the area again.

In Los Angeles, there is a large section of the city with a Korean population known as "K-Town" that has a large number of Korean restaurants and businesses of every type. It someone from Seoul visited, they would hopefully feel at home. Over the years, there have been restaurants that I frequently visit and have always enjoyed the food, but was curious about how to cook it. This was my motivation for finding a cooking class while in Seoul. I researched the different classes and this one, to me, looked to be the most personal. I am so glad that I made the decision to take the cooking class. I signed up for the Saturday cooking class which had 9 items on the menu such as: Bulgogi, Seasonal Korean soup, Seafood pancake, Japchae, Seasonal side dish. Since one of my favorite dishes was Korean potato salad from the restaurant in LA, I asked the Chef whether it was possible to learn how to make it too. To my pleasant surprise, she said to send a picture and she would try to recreate it. She was kind enough to add this item to the menu for the class and let me make it. The class starting with a fascinating walking tour of the the surrounding area, which had traditional herbal medicine shops, and the large local produce market, where our group leader purchased some ingredients to be used for the class. The class was comprised of 11 people total from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. The Chef was able to speak with us in Korean and she was able to speak with the others in Mandarin, which was very impressive. Although we all just met, everyone was very friendly and had the same enthusiasm for the class. The Chef showed us how to cut different ingredients and then had each of us take turns doing all types of preparation and the actual cooking of each dish. She was very patient and helped us when we needed it as well as offered advice. The end result of the food we cooked looked like is was restaurant quality. It was hard to believe that our class achieved such a high level of success in just a few hour period. Clearly, this was a reflection of the Chef and her team that they taught us so well! I would highly recommend this class. I came alone and had no problem feeling comfortable. It was a highlight of my trip to Seoul and when I showed pictures to other Seoul natives, who worked at the hotel, they too wanted to take such a class so I was happy to pass on the contact information. The true test for me is to invite a few Korean friends over and see what they think of my newly taught skills!
