Stephen Joseph Theatre

We're back, with cinema screenings and the wonderful Eat Me Cafe operating from our first floor space! The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema. The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names.

We rented the Snow Queen from the theatre, which was filmed with a small audience when social distancing and masks still permitted a few visitors in the audience. My children aged 3 and 6 were gripped! Having been to a few of the theatres live productions in the past, they were disappointed that we were unable to make the journey back from Switzerland to Scarborough this year to be with family, and the visit to the theatre being impossible was almost a tragedy for them. This rentals opportunity really made their day! A theatre experience in our living room, with popcorn interval too - but I had to pour my own glass of wine sadly ???? The performance was incredible - one actor giving it her all. The enthusiasm, the switch between characters, so much energy - she never faltered. The music and lighting also brought a perfect atmosphere to the show, and the editing was seamless. A very impressive piece of work by a small town theatre - I strongly recommend this show to anyone with children aged 3 and up.

We visited for a tour of the theatre with our 2 little boys aged 5 &6 having always fancied exploring this historic little gem of a theatre. We were the only ones on our tour and the guide Shiela was absolutely fantastic. She made sure she kept our boys interest with interesting facts and was so patient with answering all of their questions and letting them perform on the stage! She really is a credit to you and made the whole experience one to remember for all of us - please pass on our thanks to her. We loved the theatre so much, we have booked to come and see Aladdin in December - the boys can't wait because they know how it all works now!!

Kettlewell

A charming Yorkshire Dales village with three great pubs, an award winning youth hostel, a great village shop, brilliant campsites and some gorgeous walks right from the village. Once you get here, stay a while and get to know the area, it is really great!

Recently we stayed in Kettlewell for our stay cation. This is a lovely village with lots of charm, a village store that knocks out delicious ham sandwiches and 3 good pubs serving great food and beer. The whole village was very welcoming and nice and quiet during the witching hours, they managed the government guidelines on corona virus very well and with respect. See my related review for The Racehorses Hotel.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre

Reviewed By MartinC423 - Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

It's just on the edge of the city centre with nearby free parking, It's certainly not a posh or lavish theatre but an excellent community facility offering very good value on tickets, ice creams and sweets. I iunderstand plans are in place to improve these facilities but the basics are here and all very good. With my daughters we watched Maid in Dagenham and by the end of the show the audience were on their feet clapping and thoroughly enjoyed it, what a great atmosphere.

York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in York for 275 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April 2016 following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century
