The 10 Best Concerts & Shows in Moscow, Central Russia

January 12, 2022 Veronika Gaddis

The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

New Stage of State Academical Bolshoi Theatre

Russia is the birthplace of my favorite composer P. Tchaikovsky and his music is widely known to be composed mostly for ballet and symphonies. Being in Moscow, I really wanted to visit the Bolshoi theatre but in vain. However, on that day we coincidently bought tickets to an Opera in this place just to feel what it was like to watch Tchaikovsky's music played live in this very city and the show was beautiful. A day prior to Christmas Eve, this event was one of the best moments in Russia.!!

Bolshoi Theatre

The oldest theater in Moscow, rebuilt following a fire and later a hurricane, is magnificent both inside and out, and its resident opera and ballet troupes rate among the finest in the world.

ABOVE ALL ELSE use the official website and ignore all others. We booked for the ballet, scheduled for the 30th April, which was of course cancelled due to the virus. The refund appeared on my credit card exactly 30 days later, exactly as promised. Booking was straightforward, and prices cheaper than the Royal Opera House, and we managed to book the front Row, Seats A6 and 7! Communications, in English and Russian, were excellent. I would not hesitate to use that official website in future -most impressive, secure and efficient.

Catholic Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception of The Blessed Virgin Mary

The Roman Catholic Cathedral is the only place in the capital of Russia where the atmosphere of the real church and the sounds of a large pipe-organ combine. A neo-gothic “Piece of Europe” in the center of Moscow is visited annually by more than 120 000 listeners. They enjoy organ, ancient, classical, spiritual and modern music. Concerts in the Catholic Cathedral of Moscow are held in free time from worship and are open for any people to visit. The organizer of the concerts is the charitable foundation “De Boni Arte”.

I had previously researched visiting this Cathedral prior to my visit to Moscow and with the help the Moscow Metro phone app was able to make my way to the Ulista 1905 Goda metro station where it is a short walk to the Cathedral. This is the largest Catholic Church in Russia and a very impressive building indeed. Once inside there is an air of calm and this encourages time for reflection. Unfortunately, it is forbidden to take photographs inside which was unfortunate but nevertheless respected.

Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre

Reviewed By GillySpott - Gunnislake, United Kingdom

Lovely theatre with some interesting displays of costumes/set designs etc. As my first experience of seeing a ballet I had no idea what to expect. We saw a performance of Giselle in two acts. I was especially thrilled to discover that there was an actual orchestra (it was brilliant!). We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. I was a bit worried about what to wear but smart casual was perfect.
