Burg Schwalenberg

Kreismuseum Wewelsburg

Reviewed By 355stefang - Brussels, Belgium

Though somewhat off the beaten path, this is an excellent place to visit for some history of the local area in medieval times and in more former times (WWII). There are actually two museums here. One is the "Erinnerungs- und Gedenkstätte Wewelsburg 1933-45 im ehemaligen SS-Wachhaus," located adjacent to the castle. This museum is free and the signs are almost entirely in German, however, this is the museum that really goes in depth and explains the dark history of the castle when it was sorta the secret HQ of the Nazi SS. I recommend the audio-guide. You do get to go into a small part of the castle that is only accessible by visiting this museum. Then, there is the Wewelsburg castle itself with the museum inside the castle. This museum has a fee (though it's nominal) and is rather extensive, winding its way through the castle, focusing on medieval life, with many excellent props and artifacts. Signs again mostly in German, with some English - audio guide recommended. If I remember correctly, the caste is the only triangular shaped castle in the world (or one of the very few), reason enough to visit. Overall, an interesting place to visit.

Schloss Corvey

UNESCO World Heritage Site CORVEY The former Benedictine abbey of Corvey is considered to be one of the most important monastic establishments in medieval Germany and has been appointed a UNESCO World Heritage site. After nearly 1000 years of monastic life, today’s visitors are received into a baroque castle complex under ducal ownership. The early medieval westwork, the baroque monastery, as well as the princely library with about 75,000 volumes, fascinate guests from all over the world. A visit to Corvey is a splendid experience with its museum, castle restaurant, the Corvey wine house and the Weser Activity Hotel - Corvey is close to the Weser cycle path, too.
