The 10 Best Bus Tours in Perugia, Umbria

April 17, 2022 Trinity Boughner

This picturesque Umbrian city has a history that spans many eras. The city wall and arch are Etruscan; the sixth-century Sant'Angelo church was built atop a Roman temple; the town's cathedral is both Gothic and Renaissance. If you have a sweet tooth, visit the famous Perugina chocolate factory; if you have a full set of sweet teeth, visit during the Eurochocolate festival, held in October, when the entire town reportedly smells of chocolate.

This was booked through Viator, but the actual company doing the tour is Romaetravel. This was an excellent tour. They asked us if we could change the tour date from Monday to Sunday, which was fine. They picked us up at hotel, there were only 4 of us on the tour. We had a rest stop, then to Pompeii where we had another guide. Then on to drive through Sorrento and Amalfi coast, which was beautiful. Had a photo stop, then stopped at Positano for lunch and shopping, then on the Amalfi and a short stop there. Our guide Maure was wonderful, very knowledgable and personable. Our driver was excellent, expecially navigating all the windy roads. I would highly recommend this tour. It's a long day but totally worth it.

Excellent, thorough, and wonderful are just a few words to describe our great day with our guide,Livio. Since all four of us had been to Rome before, we really wanted to see some different sites. As we drove to Rome we planned our day with Livio suggesting that we first visit the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, since he knew that there was a 9am tour in English. This site is full of history, archaeology and faith. It truly was a highlight of our day. We then drove to a section of the original Apian Way. Our morning included visits to Circus Maximus, an overlook of the city where you can see the seven hills of Rome, The Keyhole Door, the ruins of the Forum, and the Trevi Fountain. We drove past several historical sites including The Wedding Cake. After a wonderful, delicious lunch at a local restaurant, we headed to Vatican City for the afternoon. There we were guided by a very knowledgeable guide, Rosanna. We spent over two hours visiting the Vatican Museum, the Sisten Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. A day tour with Livio and his company is truly the only way to see and appreciate this ancient city. If we could we would give Livio ********** for this great tour. Thanks Livio for providing all of us with a wonderful day and some great memories!!

If you have been to Rome before & have seen all the sights, this should be your next ‘excursion’. We had a private driver take us to Tivoli where we met our private guide...a Roman history schoolteacher who was filling in for a friend. She was sooo knowledgeable! It was HOT, but there was water along the way. The history of Hadrian (Adrian to the Italians) was mind-boggling!! Amazing how they could build what they did in only 20 years! The second part of the tour was nearby & much more lush & beautiful (see pics). Lunch was on our own. Tour guide had a few recommendations. Loved the one we chose (see my review). I liked that we had time for a leisurely lunch nearby before we met our driver for the trip back to our hotel.

I learned much and thanks to Gilberto and Max, have a much deeper and personal understanding of the challenges my father and all other servicemen and women faced during this critical time in history. As a family of three, we were excited to go on the 7 day northern lakes and Dolomites tour - especially as it would be very difficult to visit these areas by ourselves (visiting from Australia and not confident driving/getting around to these areas). The tour started well, we were the only English speakers but we had been assured our guide would provide fluent English commentary. Perhaps we expected too much but there was very little information provided about where we were or where we were travelling through. In fact, the first three days we received very limited information in total while the Spanish speakers were provided with much more. We visited some stunning places but too much of the tour focused on lunch breaks and eating rather than seeing the sights. Halfway through the tour more English speakers joined the group bit we still had to seek information rather than being provided with it on some occasions. The bus was too big for navigating city streets and mountain switchbacks - the driver often had to reverse and try multiple times to get around corners and switchbacks. I felt very sorry for him - he did a marvelous job but it would have been so much easier for him and much more enjoyable for us if we weren't concerned about falling off the side of a mountain. The company can't seem to decide whether they are catering to small groups or large and this has a huge impact on the enjoyment of the tour. In Trento we were advised that we would have several hours and could visit the castle. After paying for admission and entering we were then advised that because it was raining some people didn't want to stay so we were cutting the visit short - this should never happen! We then had to get back on the bus only to stop at a truck stop for lunch (instead of staying in lovely Trento). There wasn't really any point to having the guide as he did not provide much "guiding" only very limited information and directions to places he thought we should go and eat. We would have done as well with just the driver. If you can navigate your way around the northern lakes and Dolomites by yourself then I recommend you do that. Otherwise, perhaps a different company would provide a better tour.
