Kawazu Zakura (Kawazucho)

Reviewed By Dandelious - Hong Kong, China

I came a little bit late for the cherry blossoms (25/2). Many of the petals had already fallen... but still, I enjoyed the walk. The cherry blossoms are breathtaking. The nanohana, and the orange and lemon trees made good accompanies with the sakura. I had to stop every few steps to take pictures of them because they are so beautiful! There were also food stalls and souvenir shops that sold cherry-blossom-related food and goods. Since oranges and lemons are in the season, some shops sold them in packs too. When I felt tired walking, there are free onsen for my feet to rest and rejuvenate. I really enjoyed the hanami. Kawazu is a lovely and quiet town near the coast with good hot springs. If time allowed, I would have spent a night there to see the light-up of the cherry blossom trees along the river, and hike a bit to see the waterfalls in the morning.

This is a fantastic zoo for any fans of reptiles and amphibians. It has a very large variety of reptiles on display and fantastic interactive experiences! Highlights for us were the free range tortoises, tortoise race, and the size of the zoo (much more extensive than we thought). We weren't able to see some reptiles but this was because they had high quality terrain in their terrariums i.e. lots of foliage/logs etc. There is limited information about the reptiles in english but google meant this wasn't really an issue. Ample parking, huge gift store, and good meal selections. We thought the ticket was well worth the experience!

Kawazuzakura Festival

Of the cherry blossom trees, the "kawa-zakura" is known as an early bloomer. Starting in late January, its rich pink petals can be enjoyed for close to a month. The Kawazakura Festival begins with the blooming of the trees, and close to 800 trees on a 4km stretch along the Kawazu River burst forth in pink. At night, the area along the banks of the river becomes a pedestrian paradise, with beautiful illuminations. This is also true at Mine Onsen, where the trees are lit up. Seeing the cherry trees emerge out of the darkness is mysterious and beautiful. There are foot baths along the road where you can take a soak, and local specialties are on sale, as well as stalls serving food and drink. There are also special performances on stage.

The walk from Mizutare B/S is downhill but steps can be considered high for people with knee problems. The view is well worth the effort.
