Brombachsee

There are much prettier and more picturesque lakes in Germany and especially in Bavaria for sure. But if you are looking for beaches, water sports, yachting and similar activities this is definitely a place to go. You can choose from several beaches around the lake with restaurants, perfectly clean toilets, bike rentals and other attractions. Walking and cycling is possible on comfortable trails around whole lake. They are mostly separate for pedestrians and bicycles. The parts shared by both are sometimes very busy and one have to be careful but generally it is a nice stroll.

Karlgraben - Fossa Carolina

Reviewed By operalover939 - Toronto, Canada

In 793 Charlemagne undertook to have a canal dug that would connect the Rhine and Danube river systems. Although a reported 8000 men were put to work on it, the difficult geological situation they faced frustrated their efforts. Two canals of 500 metres each remain after all these years. They are part of Wildpark Altmuehl, and you can walk along them. A number of notice boards contain information about the geology of the region, about Charlemagne’s ill-fated project, and about the canals dug to connect the river systems in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are in German only, but provided you can read that language you will find the story fascinating. The area is beautiful.

Altmuhlsee

Altmuehlsee is according to me the most beautiful lake in the area. I visited it in winter so I can't say what is a service quality. But it seems to have everything one can need to relax on the beach or enjoy water sports. There is a bicycle path around the whole lake and marked hiking trail. Although the lake is intensively commercially used you can find there a beautiful nature and even a natural reservation. I was amazed by two big flocks of geese. Watching them flying over the lake was a breathtaking spectacle.
