The 10 best Bed and Breakfast Inns in Western Cape, South Africa

May 13, 2023 Leonardo Torrence

South Africa’s most popular tourist destination offers the urban thrills of Cape Town, its adjacent wine country and an aura of the rich political history of South Africa. The Overberg's perfect whale-watching perches provide excitement of a different nature. The Garden Route's lakes and forests and the Klein Karoo's ostrich-farming towns and vineyards present another take on the Cape. For extra kicks, try bungee jumping or cage-diving among Great Whites.

Old Mac Daddy

Part wholesome caravan park, part designer farm lodge, Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel is a new chapter in adventure, escapism and pure relaxation. Set on the pine-whispering slopes of a beautiful corner of the Elgin Valley, Old Mac Daddy is a collection of vintage Airstream Trailer Suites, each designed by an artist, designer or creative living and working in Cape Town. Fully catered and serviced; Old Mac Daddy offers trailer units with themed bedrooms and earth-friendly living spaces. A big designer barn is the communal area where all meals are served. Visit the Grolsch bar or take a dip in the swimming pool, explore the area or just relax. TRAILER SUITES Old Mac Daddy consists of ten trailer suites, two lake-side units and a family farm house - Daddy’s Villa. Each of our trailer suites is a world of its own. The Airstreams themselves have been transformed into bespoke bedrooms; each with its own theme, style and feeling from the magical to the quirky and a whole range of delicate and wonderful things in between. All but the lakeside suites, have additional living areas and decks, which allow for light-filled lounging (or use it as a kids bedroom) and time out. An en-suite bathroom with shower adds luxury to the experience making it a camping holiday like no other. Heated in winter, cooled in summer and cleverly insulated throughout, you will be sleeping way past the first cock-a-doodle-doo! THE BARN, RESTAURANT AND GROLSCH BARThis barn is more of an off-piste designer ski-lodge (without the snow, of course) boasting dramatic agrarian vistas and a vibe that says poolside in summer, fireside in winter. The indoor-outdoor Barn is where guests can enjoy healthy, wholesome meals, and treats throughout the day. Chef Siya Mnguni and restaurateur Gordon Manuel have composed a kitchen vision that centres around fresh, local ingredients and big appetites. Grolsch, the premium Dutch beer behind the sleek, magnetic Airstream, is also the creative force behind the world-class bar at the heart of the park. The large 13-metre bar makes a bold statement with its size and striking finishes. One of only a few to offer Grolsch draught, the bar is fitted with a stainless steel tap imported from Europe. Old Mac Daddy welcomes small people with an indoor-outdoor play area and a daily kiddies meal. Parents must take heed however that a pool and natural, unfenced lakes are a part of this landscape and children should be watched at all times. CONFERENCING & CELEBRATIONSA brilliant venue for conferences, meetings, pow-wows, retreats, celebrations and weddings – Old Mac Daddy can be rented entirely for functions or partially for meetings. A boardroom/conference area is located on the property (seats 20). Wireless broadband is available for those needing to get some work done. WHO IS IT FOR?Old Mac Daddy is for anyone who needs a break from the city. Anyone who wants to breathe fresh air, have apple juice run down their chin and swim in the farm dam and spend star-shot nights melting marshmallows over the fire. It’s for anyone who loves to take brisk walks in winter and then curl up in front of a cosy fire. Old Mac Daddy is for everyone.

Great Breakaway

Reviewed By MarileeT12

We had a great time staying in this beautiful place. Amenities are cleaned & everything is well presented. We only had a quick breakaway, one night stay and it was amazing listening to the rain and the frogs during the night. It was also very cozy with the heater. Bar is affordable with a huge variety & food great. I would only suggest a TV in the room for when the weather is really bad you would like to make the most out of your stay within the Airstreams.

Thank you for a super special stay, La Fontaine. Kim was an absolute pleasure when making the reservation and hosting us for a celebratory night away from home. Cecilia welcomed us at the car and was always around with a bright smile and accommodating manner. Every details was thought of in the rooms. When we returned to our room after dinner in town, our fire place was lit and room was lovely and cozy. Great linen and in- room amenities. Friendly staff all around. Breakfast the next morning was a beautiful continental buffet and my selection of hot breakfast, Blue Cheese Tartine, is something to return for. Thank you Chef Ashley. I can highly recommend this amazing boutique hotel in the heart of Franschhoek.

Trip of a Lifetime

Reviewed By Paul F

I cannot emphasize how amazing this place is!! The game drives with Coleman were the highlight. Coleman made the trip!! I called him the elephant whisperer. I can't describe the beautiful scenery in enough detail. We saw rhinos, hippos, lions, giraffes, water buffalo and of course elephants. We drove in open top cars across the entire preserve in sun and driving rain and both were amazing. Coleman also found great spots to stop for an evening cocktail under the stars. Our villa was beautiful (and huge)!! 4 bedroom, 4 bath with a kitchen and fireplace (plus a herd of wildebeest on the front lawn). We were picked up every day and taken to the lodge for meals and drives. The food was great and the service was super. The entire staff could not be friendlier. We loved this place and would recommend to anyone visiting South Africa.

Outstanding place for those wanting to do safari in luxury!

We had five days here is a Bush villa and can honestly say it’s one of the best stays we’ve ever had. The villa is on a watering hole and we saw so many animals everyday from our deck. The villa itself was gorgeous and very reasonable for six people. There are several restaurants to choose from and the food was excellent. You can even pay for a lift to and from the restaurant through the game reserve, giving you a mini game drive in the process! The reserve is huge and has four of the big five, not more then five minutes goes by before you spot another animal! All the staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for you, especially our guide Anthony. Highly recommend the horseback safari. Allows you to get up close to the animals, even rhinos! The spa is also fantastic and very competitively priced. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a taste of the true Africa.
