A really disappointing visit. Our table was dirty, ended up cleaning it myself. Many other tables were left full of dishes. Our servers were fed up, and made sure to tell us that they were not enjoying the job. Food was knocked off the plates as it was placed on the table, and the waiter ignored that and left it there on the floor! Boiling hot dishes placed down directly in front of our baby in the highchair. Food was okay, but the filth and poor service would prevent us returning.

Average Stay

Came to stay for 3 nights to attend an event. Great communication beforehand with messages advising us about parking and optional upgrading of breakfast to full English. Easy to find with good parking out back, with reasonable parking rates. Greeted by friendly manager and explained how to work the back door which can stick. Key however was attached to a large wooden panel making it not the most convieneinet thing to carry around. Room was stunning on entrance and had clearly been well decorated. However on closer inspection the room was really rather dusty and the quirky decor was in serious need of a dust, salt lamps in the room being very grubby. Bathroom very tired and in desperate need of updating as this is a stark contrast for the rest of the room. At night the room was stifling hot and only one small window to be opened, did not sleep. In addition the staff in the pub next door smoke directly below this window and strong whafts of cigarette smoke drift through. We looked for a desk fan but one wasn't included in the room. Breakfast was included in the booking but we opted to upgrade breakfast for both of us for both days, even if £10 each a day was a little steep. Service was nice and polite and breakfast clearly freshly cooked. However I did not think £10 each was value for money. Small portions and very average meal. We opted to go to the Wetherspoons the next morning and frankly got a better value for money, and enjoyable cooked breakfast for half the cost. We also found our room wasn't cleaned whilst we were out, when we asked about this its apparently due to covid restrictions. However we have stayed in other hotels during covid and this was not an issue. Gave the sense of lack of professionalism. Overall you can see alot of work has gone into this place but there are little things that just let it down. Also including the full English in the breakfasts you include with the booking would be good, this is one of the only establishments that ask you to pay extra for a cooked breakfast when they advertise 'Breakfast Included' on the booking.

Wonderful stay

We stayed during a very wet weekend in February. Catherine and Martin couldn't have been better hosts. There was tea and welsh cake on arrival, and Martin very sweetly drove us into town and collected us after a couple of nights out. We were walking some of Offa's Dyke and he even called us to check we were ok after we took rather a long time and came to pick us up from Monmouth. Way above and beyond expectations but MUCH appreciated. The property itself is gorgeous - great situation, beautifully decorated and comfy beds. There is also a huge sitting area with a log burner which was really lovely. The breakfast was superb and tailored to what we wanted. Couldn't recommend highly enough. Thank you Catherine and Martin

Bags of potential, but doesn't quite hit the mark. Cooked breakfast was not great, shower head was behind a beam causing an awkward showering position, towel rail thick with dust on all but the outside edges, and while a dog loose at breakfast does not worry me personally, I would never give my own 2dogs free reign with guests dining at home. Nevertheless the bed was really comfy and that is not often the case. Staff helpful and welcoming. Location great and decor nice. 4/5.

Shabby

Reviewed By Colin A

I expected better for the price. The room was dirty and had not been decorated in a long time - it was done when Artex was fashionable; back in the 1970's as I remember. Now the textured Artex on sloping ceilings just serves to exfoliate the skin of the unwary who get too close to it. There was dog hair all over the carpet and the carpet was stained. The bathroom in room 5 is pretty inaccessible with no extractor fan. The door lock is dodgy. There are mould stains on the walls. The furniture is shabby. On the plus side, the bed linen was clean, the bed was comfortable, although the thin duvet would be cold in winter. I was grateful that my bicycle was able to be left securely inside the building. There was ample hot water when it was given time to make the long pipe run from the tank to the tap. Two smoke alarms and a heat sensor say something but I don't like to think what.
