The 10 best Bed and Breakfast Inns in Matera, Italy

April 26, 2023 Major Galusha

Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

We had a fabulous experience at L’Origini, from the moment we arrived to the second we left. Saverio, Anna, and Claudia were terrific. Saverio took us to their private parking lot, only a minute away, They had great suggestions about where to eat and what to do, and were helpful in so many ways! Saverio told us stories about his grandparents who lived in that cave in Matera. We opened the door of our room (which was amazing) and the view was breathtaking. Lovely breakfast!

A night in the Sassi

Reviewed By Alisonnutbrown

First and foremost this b&b has an excellent position high up at the end of the sassi so that you get a breathtaking sweeping view of all of the old city. The complex of suites are private and quiet. Each has it’s own private outdoor terrace. The rooms are in the caverns carved out of the rocks as is traditional here in Matera, they’re quaint and furnished simply with traditional pieces. My 3 children slept in the Tower (Grillaio) named after the falcons that nest here during the summer. The owner Valentina, is very kind and helpful and extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Matera and is involved actively in its conservation. Considering that you are in the UNESCO site the price is also very reasonable. I will add that in times of COVID Valentina fully complied with regulatory mask and social distancing during our meetings

Corte San Pietro

Corte San Pietro is a micro district, a neighbourhood, with a courtyard onto which face rooms and suites carved out from the tufa stone, soft local sedimentary limestone. The rooms, former cave-dwellings, keep the same house number as in the past, when they were inhabited by large families. Remained uninhabited for over 50 years, they have been subject to a long and accurate process of preservation and restoration with discreet modern technological systems and have now become unusual and unique rooms and suites. Breakfast is being served in the courtyard in summertime. The historical structure has been laid bare, enhancing the masonry in tufa stone featured by niches and old-aged openings, and topped by large vaults. In the courtyard, the upper part of three cisterns helps understand the systems formerly used to collect the rain waters, subsequently connected to one another probably during the second world war. They now can be visited through highly suggestive inner passages. This is one of the main reasons why Matera is part of the Unesco world heritage list since 1993, rainwaters were then used by the inhabitants of the cave-dwellings. At Corte San Pietro, technology is invisibile, Wi-Fi is available everywhere, which allows our hosts to use it admiring the plants typical of the mediterranean vegetation such as salvia, rosemary or myrtle. Just a stone away from the hotel, the cave-church Madonna de Idris overlooks the Sasso Caveoso and the suggestive stream Gravina. Leaving the church, downstairs is the Piazza S. Pietro Caveoso with the beautiful baroque church dating back to the 14 C. Farther up, Via Purgatorio vecchio with the church where Saint John of Matera was born and where now it is possible to visit a huge cistern called Palombaro, used in the past to collect the rain waters coming from the hill where the castle Tramontano stands. Nearby, the district Malve, where graves dating back to the lombard period were found and mentioned in Carlo Levi's book as "the dead are above the living". Going from Via Buozzi up to the Civita Hill is the MUSMA, the most important italian museum exclusively dedicated to the contemporary scuplture, located in the 17 c. Palazzo Pomarici, the only italian museum in cave: a perfect symbiosis between the sculptures and some of the most characteristical places in the heart of the Sassi. A little farther up, the cathedral dating back to the 13 c., built in romanesque-apulian style on the highest point of the hill that divides the two Sassi. And a lot more to see...

Mozzafiato ... outstanding Corte San Pietro

Reviewed By Kathy R

I spent hours looking for lodging in the Sassi Caveoso for my husband, adult son and me. The Corte San Pietro fit the bill perfectly. Room 20 with a master bedroom and bathroom downstairs and a loft above with 2 twin beds and another bathroom plus an adjacent terrace allowed us to be together, but also have our private spaces. Note: this unit might not be appropriate for younger or very active children because of the stairs. May 20-22, though the temps reached the high 80s, the room was comfortable. Sitting in the shade in the courtyard, having a spritz and eating bruschetta was a nice afternoon break. Every single person on the staff was helpful and friendly. Giuseppe arranged for taxi transfers: 1. pick up at Brindisi Airport (1hr45min); this allowed us to be dropped off directly in front of the hotel. 2. Pick up at hotel and drop off just outside ZTL in Polignano a Mare (1hr15m). The taxi transfers ended up being cheaper than renting a car; it was stress-free since we didn't have to deal with unsecured parking or hauling luggage across town. Giussepe also reserved our dinner reservations and tour guide; Anna arranged a round-trip taxi ride to see Matera from the other side of the gorge at the Belvedere Murgia Timone. The hospitality of Sig. Ponte made my stay a special one. Fernando speaks English, but we conversed in Italian for an hour on many different topics; he even corrected my B-1 level Italian. Giuseppe also had the patience to communicate with me in Italian while arranging our stay. To have such interaction with a local is often difficult to achieve. At the Corte San Pietro I was able to catch a glimpse of the heart and soul of Matera. Bravo! P.S. the spread at breakfast is wonderful.

Lovely, familiar place to stay and with excellent location in the heart of beautiful Matera

Reviewed By MdelMarGC

If I had to make a top 10 of all the places I’ve stayed when being abroad, La Casa di Ele would be one the the top on the list. This place has absolutely everything you can hope when visiting a city: First of all, its location is perfect. You’re within a seven minute walk to the central train station and just in the heart of the city, seconds away from the ancient and wonderful Sassi as well as the main square, Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Second of all, Raffaele and his family, who run the place, are the perfect hosts. He made everything so simple from the moment we arrived! He gave us lots of tips and recommendations (places to visit, local restaurants to have a typical meal far from the usual touristic places…), and always with a smile on his face! A especial mention has to be made to the wonderful breakfast they prepare for their guests. They have fresh riccotta every morning, which is delicious, and Raffaele’s mother bakes an incredibly tasty lemom cake, which is out of this place! Last, but not least, the room in which we stayed was beautifully comfortable and with a balcony with a lovely view over Sassi Barisano, one of the two main neighbourhoods that form the old city. We couldn’t have asked for more. So, if you go to Matera in the near future, La Casa di Ele is the perfect choice for having a wonderful stay!

I stayed in the new accommodation and rooms which are a short walk from Vico II Emanuele Duni. Both are in a great location in Matera and within very easy reach of the sights. A very clean and comfortable room with the hosts making sure everything was ok. I had the breakfast option which is in a nice modern cafe just along the road. A great stay and would be happy to stay there again.

The apartment was my home for a week, I use the term "home" because this is how it feels when you are welcomed with so much warmth. The owner is very friendly and helpful, he will be able to advise you on how to best appreciate the city and the surrounding places. The dwelling is in the heart of the Sassi and from there you can easily reach all points of major interest. Rooms are clean, the beds very comfortable and you can enjoy a magnificent view, especially in the evening very romantic. I love photography and the pictures I took from my bedroom window are priceless. I use to travel a lot and I rarely return to a place I have already visited, but I will definitely return here, it is a magical place!

Outstanding B & B - Wonderful Caring Hosts!

Reviewed By 2travelight

Chiara's B & B is truly as special as the amazing town of Matera. We felt her caring and welcoming reception as soon as we arrived from a long stressful drive from Salerno. The first thing she and her partner did was to take us to a spectacular viewpoint to show us how we could explore this extraordinary place. The B & B is beautifully constructed and designed. Our room and bathroom was immaculate, as well as being extremely clean and comfortable. Chiara also provided us with a great map of Matera with all the information we would need to enjoy our stay. We had been traveling in Italy for 55 days and had stayed in many B & B's, and the breakfast Chiara served was definitely the best, and one that they obviously took much pride in because the food, especially the bread and cheese, represented their local heritage. They were also fun to talk to, and showed a lively interest in their guests and their needs. The B & B's great location makes it easy to visit all the wonderful and historic areas of the town.
