April 2, 2022 Giuseppe Pratt

The crown jewels, Buckingham Palace, Camden Market…in London, history collides with art, fashion, food, and good British ale. A perfect day is different for everyone: culture aficionados shouldn't miss the Tate Modern and the Royal Opera House. If you love fashion, Oxford Street has shopping galore. For foodies, cream tea at Harrod’s or crispy fish from a proper chippy offers classic London flavor. Music and book buffs will love seeing Abbey Road and the Sherlock Holmes Museum (at 221B Baker Street, of course).

Just completed 5 night stay at the glorious Lanesborough hotel (best 5 star hotel), and visited the magnificent and opulent Library bar on 3 different evenings. The décor is sumptuous and the service out of this world. A special thank you to Michael for taking such great care of us each evening, making our visits truly extra special!!! They have piano player in evenings starting at 6:30pm which is very nice. If you want a special spot, call ahead and they will try to accommodate. Truly the best bar we've visited in all our international travels, others in London don't even compare!!

Blue Bar

One of London's most sought-after destinations since it opened in 2000, the Blue Bar sets London's bar scene alight with the most sophisticated, colourful cocktails in town. The Blue Bar was extended into a state-of-the-art glass pavilion during 2016, giving it a new spaciousness and a contemporary twist, yet retaining all of the iconic Lutyens Blue panelling originally conceived by David Collins Studio. It also still has its original Edwin Lutyens lighting, alongside new furnishings by Collins's protégé Robert Angell. The extended, lighter space encourages a lively ambience, in which our skilled and knowledgeable mixologists can serve up exclusive signature cocktails with impeccable style and a touch of razzle-dazzle

A Lovely, Intimate Bar in Belgravia I cannot remember when we first discovered the Blue Bar at The Berkeley, but think that it was about 10 years ago, before a board dinner at Marcus, the restaurant just across the lovely lobby. I have also lost count of the number of visits - some for business meetings, and some just my wife and I, looking for a few glasses of Champagne/wine, in a quiet, lovely setting. In November, we were in London for that same meeting of the board, and I was with my wife, and two board members, and we wanted a quiet place to talk. Well, they did the talking, and I just kept the wines flowing. It was early afternoon, on a gloomy Autumn day, and we were seated at a large table in what I would typify as the “conservatory,” attached to the bar area, but with large windows, and a glass ceiling over most of the area. This area allowed the ladies room to spread out some documents, and also gave us a bit of privacy, away from the folk seated at, or near the bar. When one approaches, it’s easy to see why this is the Blue Bar, as that is the color theme. While not as prominent in the conservatory, it is still evident. There is a slightly different feeling, between the two room, with the main bar area more sedate, darker and more cozy - a true bar experience. The conservatory area is brighter, with more varied seating options, and has a slight industrial-chic feel to it. One wall of glass has what remind me of aircraft ailerons as shutters, and the glass ceiling is suspended by stainless steel stand-offs. On this afternoon, we were the only patrons in that room, so it was very quiet, and allowed the ladies to speak easily, across the table. Though the bar area had more folk, it was a very quiet venue too. The Blue Bar is just not a place where one would raise their voice - quiet, serene and perfect for our meeting. As I had promised them, I did keep the wines flowing: Bollinger Special Cuvée Brut NV Jean-Marc Pillot Les Noyers Bret Puligny-Montrachet ‘16 Domaine L’Églanlière Chablis by Jean Durup Pere & Fils ‘17 While the B-T-G wine list is not all that long, there are always several interesting wines on it. I noticed that they have added at least one Bordeaux poured by Coravin, and I would not be surprised to see a big Montrachet added to the Coravin list. The full wine list, for by-the-bottle selections is much, much more extensive. They also have some interesting Champagnes B-T-G, and on several occasions, my wife and I have spent an entire afternoon doing impromptu Champagne “tastings,” but not this time, as she had business to discuss. Our service was perfect, in that our server always seemed to be near-by, when needed, but never hovered. I think that he was very accustomed to having business meetings in The Blue Bar, and handled things very well. It was also nice to walk through the intimate lobby of The Berkeley, which was adorned in Autumn colors. It was an excellent afternoon, with nice wines, great, attentive service in an attractive and quiet venue, and I got to spend it with three lovely ladies. We will definitely return, and likely soon, as we are in London on business 3-4 times most years.

We fancied chips! When I mentioned that I was coeliac the maitre d’ came over to explain that his chef would be able to do them as he had just replaced the oil. In the end, to avoid any chance of cross contamination, they actually used completely fresh oil. Absolutely amazing! He really went the extra mile. And the chips were super - piping hot ‘proper’ steak chips and a really big portion. We loved them so much we ordered more. Service was great too, though perhaps topping us up a bit too quickly with the champagne. We’ve been here a couple of times and it’ll probably become our new go-to. Decent space and a nice rooftop view from the banquettes. Probably best to make a reservation.

The Nags Head

Walking into this charming pub is like traveling into the past, with its Dickensian feel and unspoiled interior, along with a unique collection of penny-arcade games and a 19th-century beer engine.

Ignore the negative reviews, this is one of my favourite pubs when in London. Very traditional and one of the few remaining proper pubs in London. The Landlord was extremely friendly and welcoming to a large group of us earlier this week including friends from USA who wanted to see a "proper pub". Good beers too. Keep your mobile phone out of sight and go outside if you want to use it. Not an unreasonable request nowadays. Enjoy
