The Joni Mitchell song “Big Yellow Taxi” has a line that goes: “They took all the trees, they put them in a tree museum They charged the people a dollar and a half just to see them.” Anyone who has been coming to Rehoboth since the before-time (pre-outlets) must be as horrified as I am about the rampant development and destruction of natural resources that has occurred here. What used to be a peaceful little town on the ocean is forever a booming mini-metropolis surrounded by the blight of commercialism and developers’ greed. Mercifully, an oasis remains. Henlopen Acres, a heavily deed-restricted community, is home to a property that has stood nearly unchanged since the mid-1700’s. We are fortunate that the Corkran family in 1938 left behind the legacy of the Rehoboth Art League. The ancient home and barn, while maintaining their historic integrity, have been repurposed into gallery and studio space, respectively. Just down the hill is a more recently constructed gallery that blends organically into the bucolic pine forest. All around, it is a refreshingly stark contrast to the madness only minutes away. Open year round, visitors can gaze at a continually changing exhibit of local artwork, much of it well-curated, and of high quality. Nearly every piece is for sale, and at surprisingly reasonable prices. There are also special events here like the RAL Outdoor show in August, and the Cottage Tour, one of the town’s best happenings. Visitors should take a break from the beach, boardwalk, and shops, and come visit the tranquil surroundings of the Rehoboth Art League. It will remind you why this area has been a getaway from hectic life for over 300 years.

Gallery One

This fine art gallery is owned and operated by a group of local artists from the Maryland/Delaware shore. Since its inception in 2005, its 22+ artists and artisans have filled the space with original paintings and fine art reproductions as well as 3-dimensional glass, pottery, wood, textile and other art. Paintings cover a broad spectrum ranging from land and seascapes to images from distant travels, florals, still lifes, figures, mixed-media, abstract and surreal renderinsgs in traditional and contemporary treatment. The gallery is refreshed on an ongoing basis, and the entire space is rehung monthly to ensure that visitors are treated to the most recent and best work available. A special theme exhibit is hung each month, in which artist/owners display a painting representing his/her unique approach to a particular topic. We are open year round, 7 days a week with exception of a few holidays.

Do not miss this gallery! It's worth a trip from anywhere to Milford to see it. I've been looking everywhere in Delaware for a gallery of this quality. She has amazing pieces of all types, art, textiles, pottery, etc, from well known juried artists as well as little known talent that she's discovered. The quality is much like you'd see at the Baltimore Crafts Fair or other places. Designers, this is a must-visit. Marcia is very welcoming. If going during the week, best to call her and make sure she's there. She's very accommodating, even on short notice.

We spent a Saturday touring New Castle and stumbled upon this gallery. We popped in and chatted with Dennis Young the Artist/Owner and he shared the background on a number of the paintings. The gallery is packed with original paintings of the New Castle, DE area. Being new to DE his insight was simply fascinating. The gallery is no to be missed.
