Scottish Highlands Hostels hotel | Places to Stay in Scottish Highlands

April 24, 2023 Venice Greaves

The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

Nice place on West Highland Way

Reviewed By Tignorsgirl

Service here was fantastic! I stayed in the West Highland Lodge instead of the Hostel though, which was OK. Shower was hot/cold, hostel was a bit noisy, and kitchen was not clean. Too expensive ($90) for this. My view was amazing though and the lodge is conveniently located to downtown and the grocery store.

A Homely Hostel

Reviewed By duncanbeard12020

I've been to the Wild Goose previously with the Peak Climbing Club and I was happy to choose it again for a mountaineering weekend with a friend. It's in a good location to access Ben Nevis or head up the main roads north, south or west if necessary. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The kitchen is clean, well-equipped and spacious, the dining room has plenty of table space and the lounge is well equipped with sofas. The beds are comfortable and the room was a reasonable size. The toilets & shower worked fine. Wi-fi was free & worked fine. The only minor niggle I have is the laundry/drying room does not have heating on all night so if you have very wet kit & need it the next day it's best to get it in there early.

Please be assured we are endeavouring to improve where we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Limited facilities

Reviewed By Angela H

The bed was comfortable, and the bike storage good, but there was only one double socket which was by the door in our room. There was no bedside lights only the main light in the room so you couldn’t read in bed if the other wanted to go to sleep. The self catering kitchen had very limited opening hours so we couldn’t make ourselves a hot drink when we arrived, or after we came back from town getting dinner at 21:10. Very disappointing YHA

Ideal location

Reviewed By DanAdventure

Cairngorm Lodge Youth Hostel is in an ideal location just a few minutes walk from Loch Morlich. The hostel has recently been renovated to a high standard; with each bed having a plug socket and USB charging points. Staff were super friendly, and overall this was an ideal hostel location. My only niggle is that all the food I had (from multiple nights) was heated via the microwave. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it is important that staff check the food is hot before serving. Further, having the microwave visible to everyone when preparing wasn't ideal.

OK for one night

Good points... Friendly staff, kept our bags until check in, good communication and help re buses etc Bad points.... The top bunk squeaked, a lot. Also has no side to stop you falling out so every time my daughter moved I was awake and had to hold my hand up to see if she was near the edge. Yes I could have made her sleep on the bottom but she wanted to sleep on the top and to be honest I'd have been worried about rolling out too as often do out of single beds. The guy on reception did offer to move us but they were busy and I didn't want to be a nuisance. One toilet was out off order and the other one blocked, neither had toilet roll. I had to wander into the other block looking for a working loo with paper. The lack of carpet on the stairs made it very noisy. All in all.... The facilities seemed good but I wouldn't stay here again
