Canceled 5 days before our trip

Reviewed By JohnJohn123412341234

The first time we tried to book this hotel we were told they had no rooms available even though it was showing available on several booking sites. We then noticed it on Airbnb at a higher price, so we tried booking through Airbnb. The host, Kate never responded. Since my girlfriend really wanted to stay at this hotel, we rearranged our plans and booked it for the following week, 3 weeks in advance. I received confirmation from the booking site, and I also received a confirmation email from Kate. Six days before our trip I booked other accommodation in different towns and booked all our flights for the rest of our trip but the next day I received an email from the booking site requesting we cancel our reservation. The email said if we didn't want to cancel ignore the email. Later that day I received a message from Kate saying we needed to cancel. She mentioned several times she was waving the cancellation fee, like she was doing us a favour. She did offer to help us find other accommodation but when I asked her what was available, I never heard back from Kate. This left us scrambling to find accommodation and cost us additional money for a last-minute hotel and we lost money on the refund exchange rate due to the owner's incompetence.

Best deal in town

Reviewed By a_reumers

No it’s not the Ritz-Carlton, the rooms are quite basic (but characterful) and it can be noisy from time to time (bring earbuds). But the prices asked are very modest and for this you get a room in a great location to explore the city, the staff is super friendly and helpful and the rooms are very clean. If you travel by car, free parking in the patio is even included. If you are looking for luxury there are plenty of other (much more expensive) options in town, if you want a great deal on a basic room you can’t go wrong with this hotel.

Comala Bed & Breakfast

Good place if you get the right room

Reviewed By W1ntersun

Carlos who is the main man running the B&B is an exceptional host and a very good chef as well. He has a helper, Alex, who is OK in a pinch but whose English is not very good and he will smile as though he understands what you have said even we he does not. There are two music halls within 100 meters from both the north and south sides of the hotel. The one to the north is a dance place that is usually packed with people and the music is loud but stops promptly at midnight. The other place has jazz groups and while loud it is actually very good for listening, unless your are trying to sleep. The B&B is located on Jose Maria Pino Suarez which is one of the main east west roads and so gets a lot of large bus and truck traffic. There are rooms on the bottom floor which are the least quiet and one on the second level that are very quiet and ones on the third level that get more of the noise from the two music halls. The rooms are small but they all include a very well designed clothes cabinet that has two upper spaces and at the base there are 6 drawers, so it is easy to put away ones clothes and gear and find them easily when wanted. The primary defect is that the windows are open from one room to the next and to the main hallway so there is zero privacy unless the roller blind is down all the time. The bathrooms are very small and lack any place other than the top of the toilet tank to put anything. A small shelf on the wall would help a great deal. It takes 4 minutes or longer to get hot water at the sink or in the shower but the pressure is good and there is plenty of hot water once it arrives. Towels are very rough and not something I would like to use on my car much less my body. Bring your own bath soap, shampoo, toilet tissues, hair dryer, and alarm clock. I recommend bringing a bar soap that works well with hard water, such as Dial or Zest, as the water is very hard. The included breakfasts were very good and included either an omelette by Carlos or hot cakes and refried black beans in a torilla cup (extremely tasty), a fruit plate with 3 or 4 fruits, and coffee. It is noisy with the traffic if eating downstairs at the entrance off the street but on the roof it is very pleasant though a bit chilly in the morning. We learned to place our orders at the kitchen and then get our two cups of coffee and take them upstairs ourselves so we had hot coffee to start the day. Something that we disliked is that there is no coffee before 8:30 and no self serve coffee maker on the roof. This is an Oaxaca thing as most of the panaderias or bakery coffee shops in town do not open until 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning. I did find a small panaderia, Panela at Aldama 318 that opens at 7:00 AM and serves excellent coffee Americano with their espresso machine. Carlos is an exceptional person and hotel manager who works very long hours to see that everything is done and guests requests are responded to in a timely manner. He picked us up at the airport when we arrived late at night and when we flew out and needed to leave for the airport at 5:00 AM, Carlos got up early and had sandwiches made for us to take an called the taxi company to be sure that our taxi would arrive on time. The location is on a very busy street but it is nonetheless a good location for walking to all the attractions, museums, mercados, restaurants, and panaderias. Everything was within 1 kilometer and we could walk to a destination in less than 20 minutes. With most of the streets one-way it was faster to walk than drive or take a taxi. There are many people who double park their cars and leave them so the streets have only 1 lane for motorists and it is very slow going. The exception is traveling before 8:00 AM as the city streets are completely empty for the most part with very few vehicles and very few pedestrians out. There are two small markets one block in either direction from the B&B which have very low prices for beer, bottled water, ice cream, snacks, and the like. With no fridge in the room we visited these markets before going back to our room. No problems with geting bowls or glasses or tableware from the kitchen staff. Wifi was excellent and the wall outlets took a standard 3-prong US plug. The B&B also provides Netflix streaming and a big advantage for us was that we could select English for the programs and watch anything that was available. Large wall mounted LCD TV made for pleasant viewing from the bed. Room safe that was large enough for laptops and small items. The bed linen and towels were changed daily and this was a matter of policy and could not be altered. The bed itself was very comfortable and we slept very well when it was quiet.

Super cute and quiet!

Okay, we loved this place! We just threw a dart on the wall and found it-the touches are very thoughtful. The garden, the plants, the rooms, even the cute little cookies and coffee they leave out every morning at the front lobby. The staff were all super nice! Always smiling and very thoughtful and kind, we felt at home. It’s a quick five minute walk from town-and they even have mezcal tasting on the weekend for free! We will definitely return here when we come back to Oaxaca. You can tell that the staff and owners take pride in the hotel, it’s very lovely. Thanks guys :)

Great location

Very friendly staff. Loved being close to Boulenc, my favorite bakery, The only drawback is the shower. Taking a shower results in a large amount of water on the floor. The shower stall looks good but the design is flawed. Asked for help and staff gave me an extra large towel to place on the floor.

Fighting Roosters

Reviewed By michaelgD2367YX

I just left this hotel because they are housing fighting roosters in one of the rooms. After lying, and trying to blame it on the 80 year old neighbor, they finally admitted that the roosters would be gone before night time. That makes me feel SO much better. I guess the big fight is tonight. For $60.00 USD (1200 MXN), you can find cheaper hotels that don't support cockfighting by housing the roosters, then lying to your face when you question them about it.

Nice People, NOISY hotel

Reviewed By Leianne C

Centrally located -- walking distance to Zocalo and markets. People are nice but do not speak much English. Clean, bare bones accommodations, but internet did work consistently. Despite sign saying credit cards are accepted, they insisted on cash payment (ATM right across the street). Very very noisy, because windows are louvred slats that do not close entirely, and the street the hotel is on is a major bus route, so from early morning to around 10:00 pm, it is quite noisy. Also, rooms are clustered around an entry hall that echoes. But, the price is definitely right....bring ear plugs if you stay here...

Hotel con fuerte desorganización, una muy mala experiencia en Oaxaca

Reviewed By marisr0d
