Knoydart River Cottage

We were not staying at the River Cottage but on 2 nights per week (wed and sat) they also accept non-residents. Booking well in advance is essential. The menu is usually themed, in our case it was Moroccan night. 3 courses plus tea/coffee, with a choice of 2 mains (chosen in advance). The dessert is a buffet with three choices plus cheese board. All for £29 per person plus drinks. There were around 18 people eating in the very modern surroundings with great views outside. Staff were excellent, attentive and very friendly. The food was simply superb. The starter was a sharing medley of breads, dips, fish and meat. We could have carried on eating it all night. The mains were slow cooked lamb (like a tagine) or a seafood platter. Both excellent. Finally the dessert buffet was a refreshingly different format - serve yourself means you can whatever portion size you feel like and can see exactly what you’re getting. Our only regret is that we can’t go back before we leave.

A very pleasant, bright atmosphere and attentive staff helped make this a very enjoyable evening. The dishes were quite good, with emphasis on the seafood, of course, and the only difficulty encountered was a somewhat lengthy wait for our entrees. Fair pricing and a welcoming oasis on the Knoydart peninsula!

Tonight was ceilidh night, after the village's Highland Games, and this place was busy! But the staff managed the situation, produced good beer (Whiteout and Happy Chappie) while we waited for a delicious meal: Belly of Pork with mustard mash, three different carrots and fantastic garlicky cabbage and apple sauce; my wife had Cullen Skink (very good) and hot salmon salad (yum!). We both had cheesecake and raspberry for dessert. A very well served and delicious meal, thanks chaps!

Wonderful seafood and excellent service: so disappointed to see that the business is for sale. The langoustines were so fresh and delicious and the haddock was superb. Highly recommended as long as the existing management and staff remain in place.

Although a little shabby around the edges, the staff were friendly and we had a lovely meal. Unfortunately the open fire was beside our table and it would have given a better impression if it had been cleaned out and reset rather than a grate of ashes with paper and sticks lying on the hearth.

My husband and I had the good fortune to visit this restaurant twice, once in June and again in August, also once for lunch and once for dinner. Both times the staff was excellent and food delicious. My husband has a seafood allergy and finding a place with good non-seafood options can be challenging in the area. This place, I can highly recommend.

Lovely little restaurant. Excellent friendly service. Good reasonably priced menu. Salmon fishcakes were tasty and the cheesecake was the best.Even when a large group of 16 came in - the staff were unflustered, calm and friendly! and still delivered quick service.Fully recommend a visit.

Cornerstone Restaurant

We reached Mallaig on the Jacobite Express steam train. Reaching this upstairs restaurant, we were asked if we were on the train so that they could make sure that we were served with plenty of time to get back.A short but varied menu with a couple of specials is matched with a much longer drinks menu, including some craft beers. My wife had the Cullen Skink (a Scottish broth of smoked and plain fish with potato in a creamy sauce) while I had sea bass with crispy capers, mussels (in the shell) and samphire in a lovely sauce, with chips in a separate bowl.We both finished off with a lemon posset served with fresh strawberries, strawberry ice cream and ginger crumb.Everything was fantastic: it’s not often you get fish cooked such that not only is the skin edible, but that it would be a crime not to eat it, as it was so delicious.Run by a lovely family, service is efficient and friendly.A definite hit.
