Where the U. S. Navy was born stands this wonderful old bank building now a restaurant. Expect excellent sandwiches and wonderful coffee drinks. The thanksgiving sandwich with Turkey and stuffing. Yum! Many other diners were happy with the tomato soup with grilled cheese.

Tip to boaters along the canal: you can walk after tying up as it is less than a block away from lock 12.

History buffs: it is the birthplace on the Navy and the Skenesborough Museum is across the street. Also in walking distance (less than a block away is lock #12.

Four family members had dinner and all had different entrees. All were very good. The portion size
is generous, prices reasonable. Only thing we didn’t understand was four servers we had before entrees arrived. We’ll return as this is the “go to place to eat out”.

Once owned by a supreme court judge, there have been many sorted owners over the years. Great views from the top of the hill and throughout the house. The visit is free with a volunteer payment. Interesting architecture. Some period furniture. We hope it will continue to grow and improve.

Rathbun's Maple Sugar House

In the middle of rural farm country, sets a rustic sugar house with a restaurant attached. If a good hearty breakfast is what you're after, then this is for you. Delicious homemade pancakes, fresh eggs, waffles, orange juice, coffee etc. will make driving a little out of the way worth it. They are opened year round, but only on Saturdays and Sundays. During sugaring season, you can watch them making maple syrup.

Stopped at the Big Apple Diner while conducting business near by. The food was very good and their cubed home fries a first in a diner.
The prices were very good and while we were having breakfast the cook was bringing fresh pies from the kitchen that looked incredible.

Traveling up rt 22 and so hungry at lunchtime, we saw the small sign for the Tavern. Took a chance. Walked in, place was empty. Older man at the bar. Said, yes, lunch available. Okay.......WELL..... We had a burger and the chicken tenders and real tea iced tea. As soon as the burger went on the grill, we knew we were in the right place! This man can cook!! The food and fries were the best we'd had on our trip. And the cook was so friendly, talking with us while we ate. What a pleasure! And the place was immaculate . Don't miss this place!

We were on our way to Vermont but wanted to stop at this restaurant partly because of it's name and partly because of it's location. Unfortunately, it was a little too cool outside to eat on the covered deck, but it would have been beautiful to eat alongside the canal. We had our choice of eating in the dining room or bar and opted for the dining room. Both rooms are very clean and nicely decorated, not with a lot of "Sasquatchs like you might expect from the name. Parking is only along the street with no designated handicap spots. Both the service and food were very, very good. Next time we are even remotely in the area we will be sure to go back.

Big G's Pub

Reviewed By Tamaqua - Tamaqua, PA

Stopped by here on a bike tour on the Manchester to Ticonderoga Leg and it was by chance we stumbled on it - but glad we did, not sure what might bring most folks through this little town, but if you are touring by and need good food with a really unexpectedly (from the outside) nice interior atmosphere, this is the place to go. Friendly service, great wings and burgers, wish I had been hungrier to tackle a larger plate, the food coming out of the kitchen looked great.

Had an excellent pizza with friends the other night. Ordered and picked up with no problems. The place seemed very busy so order early and expect the best pizza Whitehall has to offer. The wings are exceptional also. Over all I will return and enjoy pizza and wings from here. Felt safe and had no problems. Staff was great.
