The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is a quaint family run pub in Presteigne, Powys. The pub has had a much deserved makeover in recent years with new furnishings, fresh lick of paint, new fireplace and toilets. Opening hours: Monday - Thursday 4pm till late Friday - Sunday 12

Party of three booked for sunday roast as reviews on here suggested they were good. We were not disappointed. From our smug grins when we arrived to read the 'Sorry fully booked' notice pinned to the door, knowing we had booked, to the delicious home cooked style roast with such lovely gravy, we even took some home in a doggy bag! No skimping on veg or meat and all staff very attentive, despite being fully booked. The cost was very reasonable at £8ish. Have already recommended to owners of holiday accommodation we were staying in and left menu for other holiday makers.

After having walked around Kington, we decided to call into this pub for a drink. The pub is how I would describe a typical pub from quite some time ago, none of your modernism here, the lady behind the bar was friendly and we were made to feel welcome, we sat in the lounge and enjoyed our drinks which were reasonably priced. The pub wasn't overly busy but I think it relies on locals rather than passing trade, but we could recommend you visit for a drink, no complaints.

When we stay in the area we always frequent the Harp. Not only is the location amazing, the service superb and the food wonderful but the beer and cider is pretty good too. It’s also a great place to find the odd historic Bently, Mercedes or Moto Guzzi parked in the car park. We will be back again and again.

The Tram Inn

Traditional country free house specialising in freshly prepared meals, using locally sourced produce. A great selection of real ales, ciders, perry, wines and soft drinks are available.

We went in for a Sunday roast. The food was delicious. A large selection of fresh vegetables including beetroot. The desserts were beautifully presented and tasted lovely. The staff were very friendly and efficient. We didn't have to wait too long for our food and wee were rushed out.

Royal Oak

Public house with 3 letting rooms 2 twins and one single. Large beer garden Restaurant serving home cooked English food. Dog friendly. Good selection of real ale.

I walked the short distance into Kington from the excellent Castle Hill House B&B, and chose The Royal Oak because it was raining hard and it was the first eatery that I came across. The bar was crowded and convivial, and my pint of Wye Valley was delicious. In the Sawadee restaurant, I chose Tom Yam Gai (spicy sour soup with chicken and vegetables), prawn tempura (I was very hungry), stir fried pork with oyster sauce and egg fried rice. Each dish was cooked to order, yet swiftly served and well presented. The flavours were distinct, and the Thai chef had cleverly ensured that each dish had a variety of textures. A wonderful meal, and I will definitely visit again the next time that I'm in Kington.

Ye Olde Tavern

Ye Olde Tavern is a Grade II listed public house. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. It was built in the late 18th/early 19th century. Traditional old fashioned pub.

I couldn't eat here - too early in the week - but I heartily recommend a drop of real ale (and conversation with the locals...) in this CAMRA-recognised pub just off the A44. The closest equivalent back at home closed after the death of the elderly landlord, so this was a moment to treasure. Catch'em while you can.

A bit disappointed after reading many of the positive reviews. No vegan option on the menu but they did kindly offer an alternative, though unfortunately it wasn’t great and was a very small portion. Also, the staff were dressed so casually I couldn’t even tell if they worked there so a little confusing.

A warm welcome, beautiful setting, great food and excellent service. We went for dinner on Saturday and lunch on Mothers Day, and even if there had not been variations to the menu it would still have offered variety. Great food, gorgeous presentation and ample portions! Only sorry I'm going back to France !
