Pesce d'Oro

This is a nice restaurant located on the south shore of Lake Chiusi. You need to watch for the signs to find it without too much difficulty. Nice menu specializing in fish, including fish from the lake. Decent service and ambiance. Would probably be very nice in warm weather as it is located right by the shore.

We dined inside during a heat wave. Luckily there was adequate air conditioning. Our server, Gian Marco, was highly attentive, smart with the advice and accommodating. The food is all Slow Food prepared using local ingredients, traditional recipes and expert prepared by local chefs. It was scrumptious from the starter to the pasta to the main course and of course dessert. The table wine was first rate. Pricing was reasonable. Would I dine here again? Yes of course. Would I recommend it to others? Yes, of course.

La Locanda della Ribollita

Missed the motorway turning and got lost in Chiusi trying to get home... we were very hungry so pulled in here... attracted (like moths) to the lighting and smart frontage. Appearances can often be deceptive but not this time. A warm welcome from owner Clemente (Italian and fluent in English/American!) and his American wife. They took over the place about a year ago and have a 10-bedroom B&B in the same building. All very smart, clean and typicall Tuscan (but thankfully not cluttered like too many other abodes!)We are in the midst of the madness of the Duckun Diet so no carbs (pasta, bread, rice all off the menu for us) and little oil... But nothing was too much of a hassle for the kitchen. We settled for two fab steaks on the grill (mouthwatering) and grilled vegetables, salad and other nibbles. All excellent. The coffees were a gift from him ("For suffering so much on the diet...") and we vowed to return when the full menu will be at our disposal.I can report the other tables had lots of locals and even doctors – always a good sign if the doctors eat at a restaurant. They are always rich in Italy and can dine anywhere but choose the best establishments) . Others were being served wonderful pastas, homemade pastries and desserts – and choosing from a great wine list. Next time, next time...

Trattoria Porsenna

We've come to the Trattoria Porsenna for 15 years or more. It's located a 15-second walk from the Chiusi train station and from the Hertz and Europcar car rental offices. It's mainly a place for railroad employees and officials. Very friendly and incredibly efficient waitstaff, who remembered us after an at least 2-year absence. Rapid service, even when full, which is almost always. Practically no tourists as customers, though they are welcome. Local pasta specialties, as well as game dishes. We had bresaola/rughetta/parmigiano as starter, followed by pappardelle with wild boar sauce, followed by profiteroles, accompanied by a liter of bottled water. Hearty portions. Nineteen euros. We love this place.

This is the place locals go for fine dining. Linen tablecloths and extra silverware . . . but the food will keep you coming back. Beet gnocchi with goat cheese sauce -- superb! Also the pici with ragut was outstanding.

La Solita Zuppa

Osteria la solita zuppa

This restaurant, in the old town of Chiusi, is quite special. Italian food is extremely traditional, and what distinguishes good restaurants from bad, according to the Italian thinking, is the quality and freshness of the ingredients rather than originality. La Solita Zuppa, however, manages to serve really good traditional dishes while at the same time coming up with some fabulous variations on traditional themes. (It is very much a slow food restaurant.) The pici with a goose ragu (a special) was extraordinarily good, one of the best rich meaty pasta sauces I have had. The maiale (pork) slow cooked in chestnut honey was out of this world. The roast beef, though more traditional, had a melt-in-the mouth tenderness. And the three icecream balls was up there with the best desserts ever. It sounds banal, but is like nothing what you will ever find in a gelateria: it involved mascarpone and yoghurt, chestnut honey and saffron, and I forget the third. The subtlety and distinctiveness of the flavours was as good as it gets. Soups are their speciality (as the name indicates) but we didn’t try them as it was not really the season. All these dishes would do a multi-starred Michelin restaurant proud. The house wine was very good as well (a good test). Judging from the wines ordered by the next table, the wine list ooks pretty good too. The presentation was a little more formal than the usual trattoria – linen, nice glasses, etc. – which made it good for an occasion. There was a mix of discriminating tourists and locals. The affable and very likeable owner and head chef will explain all the dishes, in English if required, and it is worth taking his advice as there are often specials not on the menu. Value was extraordinarily good – right at the low end of standard trattoria prices, yet the food quality was top of the range. Definitely a stop on a culinary tour of Italy.Chiusi vecchio is quite a pretty town, not much visited: the 1930s archaeological museum, devoted to Etruscan antiquities, is interesting, as is the church opposite.

A real hidden gem. Simply outstanding!!! We loved it! It's tucked away in Chiusi, Tuscany but well worth finding. It felt like sitting by in a high-end restaurant in Florence or Rome. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and efficient. Don't use the menu, let them lay the meal out and match the wines for you. You will be very pleased.

On our first night of our Tuscany adventure we wanted something a little special and the owner of our Villa recommended Chiostro Cennini - it did not disappoint! On arriving we were warmly greeted by Lucia and guided through the large wooden doors of the ancient town into a beautiful rustic courtyard filled with music and laughter. The first port of call, to meet her mother and father who has prepared snacks for all the dinner guests - it was wonderful! and set the tone for the rest of the evening. The food was excellent, the local wine was lovely and but it was the atmosphere that just grabbed you and pulled you in - it was a lovely, warm, welcoming, relaxing and oh so enjoyable. My only regret is that we did not get to return - a week in Sarteano is just not long enough!
