The Antelope Inn

A delightful pub, traditional and down to earth. The steak and ale pie was quite simply delicious with a flaky pastry top. The steak soft and full of flavour, with quality new potatoes and lovely veg. A large and very filling portion. Salted caramel ice cream was the best ever. Highly recommended.

Having moved to Sturminster 11 months ago we have eaten in the Swan many times and sampled most of the menu but never tried the Sunday Roast until today .. 2 courses for £14 saw a full plate of well cooked roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings placed before us followed by a fruity crumble desert with custard..good value and well cooked dinner..great hosts and attentive staff ..recommended.

Sadly I have not had time to go to Sturminster in the last 12 months. However I needed something from a specialist supplier based there and of course went to POES CORNER for a coffee break.I am happy to say it has not changed or gone down hill as many places seem to in these times of financial unease !The owner was not there but his family and a member of staff are every bit as efficient as when he is there not always the case in too many places, I was unlucky with the baklava but had a really nice moist piece of fruit cake with a latte. One nice touch while I was there was a knock on the window from the seating outside by a disabled lady prompted an immediate response and service Well done poets corner! Sadly Sturminster as a town seems to be dying slowly so I worry this café might face problems in the future so please do visit if you are in the area and keep some of the good guys from disappearing or being engulfed by the CAFE NERO s etc

Booked a table for 6 plus a young baby. Gentleman most helpful with booking and wife's onion allergy. Greeted warmly, served drinks and shown to table. Fairly quiet but got busy later on. Mains of Hunters chicken, fish and chips, scampi and jacket with prawns all cooked and presented well and very tasty. Puddings all delicious. Wife had cheese board which was huge, but none went to waste!! Staff were very good and made a great fuss of the baby with us. Little things like that make a big difference to the whole experience. Good food, service and value for money. Highly recommend for a good pub meal.

We had dinner here recently and were impressed by the quality of the meals and service. We ordered from the Specials menu; my wife had the confit duck leg and I had the roast hake. The duck leg was very large, full of flavour, and went well with the accompanying veg. My hake was perfectly cooked, as were the potatoes and butternut squash bisque, which was delicious. We both enjoyed our mains so much that we decided to have a dessert each, creme brulee and a chocolate brownie, both of which were very good and the decaff coffee was excellent. Service was also excellent throughout and we were encouraged to sample our drinks, an italian red and a, new to me, Ringwood Brewery ale, before ordering and both were very good, the wine in particular. Two courses each and two drinks came to around £60, which we thought was good value given the standard of our meals as it was evident that some skill had gone into their cooking. As we live locally we will certainly visit again.Thank you for your lovely comments - we hope to see you again!

We ate here for Mother's Day lunch having booked in advance and given a time we had to vacate the table by in order for them to turn it. Arrived and it was immediately obvious that they were stretched to capacity as the queues were forming at the bar and carvery making it difficult to get served or travel through to our table. Most of us decided on large carveries and one person ordered steak. Back up to the bar to order the food and there was another wait as an issue with a lost reservation caused a backlog of people waiting to be served. We then queued for the carvery. It took 10 minutes to get to the front of the queue.Once served and back at our table we tucked in. Carvery is such a difficult thing to get right because your catering for the masses. Unfortunately the beef was well overdone and quite dry, the pork was ok but the lamb was my favourite. The potatoes were done well but sadly were cold. The broccoli was slightly underdone but edible. Other veg were nice and the gravy was lovely.Steak on the other hand should be a doddle and is one of the dishes I like to use as a comparison. The steak was cooked to the requested temperature (rare) but unfortunately was tough, dry and chewy. I don't know if it had been frozen at some point but I wasn't really that impressed with the quality of it.Only two of us had dessert. The Brownie (dry and in need of more ice cream to accompany it) and the syrup sponge (lovely). I'd like to try the place again when it's not so busy as from the other reviews it sounds like they might have had an off day and I recognise that it was extremely busy. It's a shame that our experience on this occasion was an average one. When you dealt with them the staff were efficient and polite.

The Baker Arms

A quintessential Dorset Village pub & Cottage. Located on the edge of the Cranborne chase, area of outstanding natural beauty. Fireplace, pool table, darts, great beer & freshly prepared food. Open 7 days a week.

We hired out the accommodation the pub has to rent. Simply put...it is the best little cottage we have stayed at with our dogs. Immaculate finish, more than enough room and so clean. A real gem that we are already planning to book again. Desi was lovely and really couldn't do enough for us. So helpful. The pub is literally 5m from the front door. They do a nice range of beer and drinks. The food was splendid.Location, really centrally placed to get to poole or Weymouth or further afield should you wish. It took us around 35-40 minutes to get to West Lulworth. Thank you both for making our trip that much better.

This beautiful Jacobean Manor House has been owned by the same family since the 17th century and has been run as a restaurant/hotel for 40years by the present occupants. Far from being regulars we are always made to feel such by Richard and his team, the house is welcoming, warm and a real Dorset country house appreciated by real Dorset people. I could ramble on about how comfortable the rooms are, how great the food is, how good the service is and it all really is but the best way is to try it yourself, you will not be disappointed.

The Stur Of The Moment

Reviewed By MoonRaker4

Don't be put off by the rather small frontage of this cafe - the Stur of the Moment shares a building with solicitors but it is like the Tardis - there are plenty of seats (I estimate about 60) as the building stretches back quite a way. There is also an outside courtyard seating area at the rear. There should be something on the menu here for everyone - mostly traditional English fare but the specials board can contain a few surprises. I chose warmed duck leg with salad (and a cappuccino) for £11.45 and it was delicious although it lacked my preferred orange sauce. I could not find a rating on Dorset's 'scores on the doors' website for food hygiene but I saw nothing to concern me in this cafe. There is a very clean customer toilet (see my comment below). The (waitress) service was quick and polite. The cafe takes card payments for a minimum of £5.On a more general note - Sturminster Newton is a lovely small town and well worth a visit. It seems to have everything - police station (and cops on a foot patrol, how often do you see that?), fire station, theatre/cinema, drop-in centre, river walk and the old S&D railway has been converted into a delightful linear park. But what it lacks is public toilets - both blocks were closed and locked on the day I visited apparently due to vandalism.Thank you for your review, yes we are a quite a bit larger than a first impression gives and at this time of year the courtyard is a lovely secluded spot to enjoy lunch. We aren’t listed on ‘scores on doors’ because we are on the Food Standards Agency website, with a rating of 5. Our sticker is displayed on the front as you enter the building.
