White Hart Hotel & Bar, Restaurant

Traditional pub and restaurant with hotel accommodation and function room, pool table, big screen TV.

I vowed not to return but my other half was wanting Sunday Lunch and we were back in the area so thought we would give the White Hart another chance. No chicken - sorry it’s all gone - so lamb and gammon it was - food today was really not that fantastic but filled a gap - as we were waiting for our fodder - the lads came in to watch the rugby on the big screen - killed lunch dead for us. Didn’t stay for dessert - we had had enough - my other half has a slight fear of pubs and sporting stuff - but we were only on for a single quick lunch so made our way back to our holiday flat. Whilst we were in the car park we bumped into a gent who advised that he had heard that the current tenants are selling up - Phew !!!!Hopefully the place will recover to its former glory with new charges behind the bar and on the kitchen - lets give it a few months for the changeover and see what happens !!! 'The gent advised you that he'd heard' oh dear!! Well watch and wait. I find it strange how ever time we get a 'bad review' it gets liked 5 or 6 times but when it's an Honest good one, we get none. Strange that PS. We had plenty of chicken, also lamb shank and pork ribs.

This Horse and Groom is a very dated traditional type of establishment that is very relaxing to be in. We were there for over 3 hours and time just flew by.The comprehensive menu has some traditional favourites along with some more contemporary meals. The coffee served is also very nice. Service is very good and the meals all arrived at the table together, hot and presented well. Only one disappointing thing is there was only one dressed crab salad left (it looked lovely). The fish cakes are also delicious. The whole party of 9 enjoyed all the various meals that they had ordered. So please you had a pleasant time with us.We get fresh crab daily from Brixham but never know how many each day, they are very popular hence sometimes we run out quickly.Hope to see you all again soon.

Very good central pub in centre of small country town with high standard classic pub food in good traditional surroundings. Easily worth a Tripadvisor entry.

Let me say in opening that this is a neutral review in respect of previous comments made by others. I was also told by my friend who lives locally that we should expect generous portions and an excellent atmosphere. Neither was in evidence.Visited as a couple Saturday evening 6th October just about 7.30 p.m. Trade was very light. Charming lady behind the bar on being asked what the soup of the day was, told me vegetable and she had made it last Monday. ( Hardly Fresh) Chose not to partake.Ordered lasagne, salad and garlic bread plus a chilli con carne and battered mushroom with dips to share. Two apologies later for the length of waiting time, no garlic bread but, unrequested and not shown on menu as a choice chips instead. I was told that the chef was new and one member of staff had not turned up. Hence long delays. On the subject of the garlic bread which was absent was told with apology that the fiancée of the employee was doing the cooking and a customer was helping out, clearly staffing issues.Lasagne had been over baked and lot of crunchy pasta, garlic bread as mentioned didn’t turn up and I was told by my companion that the chilli con carne had the flavour that it had come out of a jar.Asking for pudding learned that it was Spotty Dick or Treacle pudding-neither appealed..In my opinion, the new management should not have taken over the reins until a true and professional service could be implemented, this is what I had been led to expect. So as I said in opening this is a neutral review. New management been in for only a few days but clearly not yet ready for high demand on the kitchens. In my sight whilst there only one other table had dinners but more people were coming in and looking at menu’s.I do wish them well. This is a true genuine review of the visit. I am an experienced assessor regularly carrying out assessments of restaurants and hotels internationally as an inspector and ’mystery shopper’.Dear Safenoble,Many thanks for your very constructive review. Yes, it was the Management Teams very first week, and as a small group of pubs we do expect to hit some sharp learning curves when new managers regardless of experience, take on a new challenge.I am sure that Ally and her fiancee Chris will strive to do better things, and will learn from your feedback, as well as from my Area Manager that is currently supporting them to settle into their new roles. We've had a huge amount of positive feedback from our feedback cards, but I do feel that some negative (constructive) feedback is much more useful so that as a team, we can grow and develop. Thanks again for your feedback, I hope you'll revisit in a few weeks and give Ally and Chris another opportunity to impress.Kind Regards,Dan.

On our first visit to the restaurant I came away thinking “wow”. Amazing for the price all the meat and veg were excellent. Absolutely nothing to fault. Came again a few weeks later with friends and family and it couldn’t have been more different. The beef was like leather unlike before when it melted in your mouth. The vegetables were ok but nothing special. The gentleman carving the meat just does not want to be there. No interaction at all. We will try again though.

Met friends for Sunday lunch, no complaints good selection of meats and vegetables, however I just about choked on my beer when I was charged £5.40 for a baileys! I did query it but was told that was the price. I dont mind paying my way but thought that was a bit excessive.

Called in for supper after a day out visiting Tavistock and Dartmoor. Lovely staff and owners, very welcoming and friendly. We ordered fish and chips and it was fabulous, well cooked and delicious The bonus of being there on a Thursday was it was 2 for £20, incredible value. Felt like stepping back in time, lovely pub where you could hear a conversation without the loud music, friendly and welcoming atmosphere and good food. We will be back.

If you ask for the gluten free option then you will get whatever the normal option is with gluten containing items removed so the roast consisted of boiled potatoes, thinly sliced meat, vegetables and gravy - no roast potatoes, no sausage, no stuffing. Come on - it is really easy to keep gluten free sausages in the freezer and what is wrong with peeling potatoes and roasting them. Poor show for the price.
