Excellent off season visit!

Reviewed By Rachel M

I traveled here alone before high season and almost had the entire place to myself! Staff were super helpful and friendly, location was a little remote but I liked that. Hotel helped me organize excursions and it was awesome to have the dive company attached - dive point Zanzibar staff and services were EXCELLENT. Good food, reasonable prices, amazing views. No beach but good poolside and cliffside seating and better views than you can get at a beach.

Zanzibar Retreat Hotel

The hotel is situated directly on the beach. Its a peaceful and tranquil setting with plenty of shady places for you to relax. There is a 16x8 meter pool perfect for a refreshing swim when the tide is out. The hotel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and there is a well-stocked bar to accompany. We are proud to have a good reputation regarding food. We work consequently with proper waist management, and support education in the village. Most of our suppliers are from the village, and we try our best to have a good relation with the whole village.

DEFINITELY GO THERE!!

My friend Celine and I stayed at this beautiful hidden gem for 2 nights. The owner is very friendly and the staff is absolutely lovely. The food is divine, the bedrooms have A/C and are perfect for a little retreat. We definitely recommend you to go there if you are looking for some calm, rest and some peace. We will be back for sure!!

Favorite Place in Tanzania

Reviewed By Josh C

We just spent two weeks in Tanzania and our four days at Matemwe were our favorite. The rooms were super clean, spacious, and with spectacular views. The meals were amazing (dinner on the beach, bbq buffet, superb fresh fish and fruit...). The snorkeling was perhaps the best I have experienced and swimming with a pod of 18 dolphins is something we will all remember forever. But what made the visit were the people. The staff was unbelievably attentive and kind. We were so sad to leave!

Relaxing place, beautiful pool area.

Reviewed By Craigmac35

This was a great place to hang out for a few days and chill. The resort was right on the beach, which was great for walks and sunrises, and the pool area was fantastic. Breakfast was fantastic, such great variety and very well prepared. We had lunch and dinner at the place a couple of times, unfortunately the food wasn't a great as the breakfast. Most meals were fine, but fell the quality could have been a little better. We had a late flight in, so the kitchen was closed when we arrived, however as we had let the staff k ow about this, they arrange a for some snacks and fruit platter to be left in our room - which was very good. Wifi was good throughout the place - which was also a bonus.

Villa Kiva

Villa Kiva is located on the long and white sandy beach of Matemwe on the north east coast of Zanzibar. Matemwe is well known for the absence of big resorts and mass tourism. It is a part of the island where it is still possible to share and live the local life, walking through a local fish market and having a relaxing time on the beach. Just in front of Villa Kiva there is the atoll of Mnemba Island where it is possible to admire the amazing reef and colourful fish both snorkeling and scuba diving.

Excellence! - but two minor downsides

Reviewed By oscwy

We had a nice room with a great sea view balcony. The setting was nice with easy access to the ocean and two swimming pools in the back. Housekeeping was perfect. Really nice place! Two downsides however: the restaurant was ok, but not more than that. Some of the staff never smiled - not a big problem, but an would have been an easy way to improve or experience.

Disappointing experience in a beautiful setting

Reviewed By ChristineJ1013

We booked 4 nights at this hotel in February for the Easter week and had looked very much forward to it as part of our holidays in Zanzibar. Upon arrival to Pearl Boutique Hotel we were greeted by a male front desk manager and a couple of friendly female staff members. The manager informed us that we could use mountain bikes free of charge, that we probably couldn’t go on a boat tour with our 11 months year old baby, that we needed reef shoes to swim in the sea and that it was likely to rain during our entire stay. After that kind introduction, which took approximately 1 hour since they asked for an upfront payment of the room and didn’t believe us when we said that 50% was already paid when we made the reservation and needed to check their system, we were shown to our room. In the mail from the lady at the reservation department, the room was referred to as a “Pearl suite”. It was a sea front, tiny room measuring an estimated 16 square meters with a small double bed and two old fans. The fans were not connected though, so the room was extremely hot and humid. We asked to be shown an alternative room and they offer us the “Pearl villa” for 270 USD per night, which is with a 10% discount to which is added a 5% “card fee”. The reservation of the “Pearl suite” was made with a 15% discount due to the low season. But, as they reminded us, they don’t do any refunds so it made sense to accept their current price and top up what we already disbursed rather than to leave and go back to our previous hotel. The “Pearl villa” is a pleasant room with AC, an out door bathroom and a plunge pool, but the name is still misleading - it is not a villa - it’s a normally sized hotel room with a nice, private outdoor space..! It is also next to the ocean has a beautiful view. We were supplied with one bottle of filtered water per day for three persons, and the shower cream / shampoo in the room was of cheap quality. We booked half board, where a three course dinner with a very ambitious menu was included. Unfortunately, the food was OK at best. It would probably be easier to maintain high quality with a shorter menu. The service staff were very kind, friendly and flexible. The breakfast was also generous in size and the taste/quality was OK. We would never stay here again or recommend anyone to to so due to the overpriced rates used in combination with the lack of high quality expected with those rates - this includes the food, the beds and the entire interior both in the rooms and in the common areas. As a reference, we stayed at Park Hyatt in Stone Town in the beginning of our trip to Zanzibar which was only a little pricier and the experience is not comparable in terms of the standard and services provided.

Wonderful beach-front hotel!

Reviewed By Timo20

We loved out stay at Kena Beach Hotel: the hotel is beautiful, well appointed, and very comfortable. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are bright and airy, spacious, and each have a private outdoor seating area. We had half-board (breakfast + dinner), but ended up eating almost all of our lunches there because the price was reasonable, food delicious, and the menu always changing. We took advantage of the free bikes (adult + kid sizes) to bike on the beach, the reef walk at low tide, and playing in the waves at high tide.

Nice hotel at the beach

Reviewed By Travel222035

The Hotel is nice, directly situated at the beach. The beach is busy- men building a boat next to the sunbeds, men selling souvenirs standing and watching the guests, children asking for money when you want to go to the sea. Food is good, the waiters and staff friendly & polite. The hotel has a few cats. There are only two umbrellas to hide from the sun at the pool.
