November 20, 2017 Darleen Reid

Mardin (Kurdish: Mêrdîn‎, Syriac: ܡܶܪܕܺܝܢ‎, Arabic/Ottoman Turkish: ماردين Mārdīn) is a city and multiple (former/titular) bishopric in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.

This is a wine growing region with excellent wines made by the Syriac families but few restaurants are licensed. It is a pity that this one should not serve wine. That would add to the experience : the setting is wonderful in this restored Syriac house and the fare is delicious.

Rıdo, a small kebap house on the main road in old city offers you one of the best taste of the region. The two storey restaurant is small, little bit cramped, do not look very appealing with the untidy look, raw meat waiting to be prepared on the other side . Yet as saying goes looks are not everything, get in and take your seat and just deciede what you would like to drink. The service is quick and friendly .
They serve kebap on a soft and warm very delicious pita bread along with fresh salad, grilled peppers and tomato. The Kebap, chopped , prepared and cooked infront of you if you sit on the first floor, is memorable. The place does not serve liqour and the client turnover is fast so you eat and leave.
If you visit Mardin it is one place that should not be missed. The prices nothing compared to your experience .

– Looks like in an excellent view but we arrived after sunset and the temps in December were not conducive to outdoor Seating
– excellent soup taste
– Kofte was very spicy and very good
– Yogurt appetizer was excellent – Waitstaff (maybe also the manager) spoke English well and were quite nice/friendly
– Restaurant inside was cold
– bathrooms are outside the restaurant
– we arrived at 1700 on a Saturday and there were only two other couples there, but the live music started at 1900 and that is probably when it gets crowded

This review is for the Sadık Künefe Branch on the 1st street at Old Mardin.
The desert cafe is very modern, well lit and welcoming place right on the busy 1st street at Old Mardin. The künefe that I ordered was simply outstanding. The gracious and affable gentleman, the manager Mehmet Bey, explained to me that they emphasize quality at the expense of higher costs and that the special cheese they use in the künefe are all brought from Hatay, the home of künefe.
The künefe was crispy enough, right out of the oven, served with a generous portion of Antep nuts on the side for optional sprinkle on the serving, the sherbet just at the right dosage for sweetening, and the right cheese inside amply provided for a generous portion. Overall, this is the best künefe I have eaten, outside of Antakya, home of künefe. The service was also excellent thanks to a very friendly waiter, Veysel.
I highly recommend this cafe/desert place to everyone visiting Old Mardin, for an unforgettable taste of delicious künefe.

Specialized in the Kunefe, a special type of hot kadayif sweet with cheese, this place just doing its best and nothing more. It is not in the center of town and a little bit far, but it worth to take a cab just for a sweet. It is clean, prices are OK and seems always open.

First, the rooftop view of the Mesopotamian plains is absolutely inspiring, particularly at sunset. Fantastic location with views and a light breeze. The ambiance is just perfect with old music at a low level. Staff doesn't speak much English, but they are friendly and helpful. The food is fantastic, with many regional specialities that I haven't seen anywhere else in Turkey. Not only was it very tasty, but the presentation of the food was delightful. And, the prices are reasonable as well, especially considering the wonderful ambiance and the quality of the food.
