With its monumental Palazzo Ducale rising above a moat of artificial lakes, Mantua’s seems plucked from the pages of a fairy tale. In the walkable, UNESCO-listed old town, pint-sized bars and boutiques spill onto piazzas little changed since medieval times.

Scaravelli: Residenza Ca delle Erbe

Located in front of one of the historical and most famous Palaces of the city (Palazzo della Ragione), Ca’ delle Erbe is named after the square where, in ancient times, there was the Mercato delle Erbe (the fruit and vegetables market). This Residence, recently born in one of the historical mantuan Palace, built at the end of the XVI century, has the honour and the prestige to be situated next to Basilica Sant’Andrea.

Location is not everything

Reviewed By watchmaker16

The location overlooking Piazza delle Erbe is very central, but also noisy in the evening. We booked the rooftop suite with the little terrace from wher you could see the city from above and this was very nice. Ther is also a small elevator if you don't want to climb the stairs with your suitcase. However, to access the room, you have to walk about half a mile from the parking, which is NOT very nice when it's raining of if you have a lot of luggage to carry. It is not recommended for elderly or disabled persons. The most disappointing was the "breakfast": a voucher to get industrial pastries and a terrible coffee / juice in a shabby little bar about 10 min walk from the room. If it's not to save a few euros in the wrong way, we don't understand why the owners have made this choice, knowing they have a restaurant in front of the residence AND a nice pastry shop at the ground floor of the residence, making wonderful food and their own chocolate? So the customer experience in the morning is to pass in front of a fantastic place with this fresh chocolate smell...to go to another cheap place ? Not in line with the price asked for the room!

Best price-quality stay to visit beautiful & historic Mantova by car. Recommended!

We're really happy to have chosen for this stay in Mantova/Mantua. We slept like a rose in the comfortable beds, a lot of choices for breakfast, certainly in Italy, easy to check in (with a code if there is no one present) and most of all a very friendly innkeeper, Stefano! From the 6 Porte Guesthouse you can easily drive a few minutes to the Campo Canoa Parking (where a free shuttle brings you to the city during the working hours) and visit Mantova/Mantua. Don't forget that the historical centre has limited access zones for cars. Really recommend this guesthouse, and Mantova is really worth a visit because of its unique historical look and feel.

Interesting experience, but not entirely as described

There's a lot to like about this guest house (it can't be called a hotel), particularly its location. It's very close to the historic centre of Mantua, which is completely glorious, and to all the main sights. It's also undeniably very interesting to spend a night or two in a historic building of this kind. We had the enormous, vaulted cellar apartment, and it's an unusual and evocative space. Having said all that, however, I'm not sure we would rush back here. Reviews from 2018 talk with enthusiasm of the breakfast provided in the apartments, but the management has clearly decided to suspend that service, so that you have to go out and forage for breakfast in local cafes. That's fine if you're happy with the classic Italian breakfast of coffee and brioche, but not so great if you aren't. Also, although the apartments are advertised as having kitchens, that's a little misleading. (I had envisaged it as a kind of aparthotel from the description.) Our apartment had a very underpowered fridge, a kettle, and an espresso maker (with a rather ungenerous two pods). There's a hob and various empty cupboards, but there are no plates or cutlery. There's a sign saying that, if you want to use the kitchen, you should contact the management, but that seems rather a hassle if you are only there for a couple of nights. There wasn't too much sign of the free local parking listed on the site I booked from, either. The choice seemed to be either highly competitive metered street parking or a multi-storey a few blocks away. I wasn't sure that the romance of living in a historic building--or even the great location--fully compensated for all these inconveniences. The apartments are vast in terms of square metres, but the space isn't especially well thought out--there's a lovely and distinctive room, for example, the old ice room, but it's not furnished in such a way that you can actually use it. The apartment might work well for a family (there are two single bedrooms, as well as the double one), and that would presumably make it good value, but I'm not sure it really works for a couple. It isn't furnished in a way that enhances the space, either--it's all a bit 'hand me down,' as if an elderly relative had lent you their flat.

As has been mentioned, the Antico Residence is attached to the ABC Hotel and across the street from the train station. We booked 3 double rooms and one single for 2 nights at such a reasonable price that I worried about the quality of the rooms. I needn't have. The hotel is not luxurious, but the rooms are large, clean and comfortable. The rooms we had overlooked an interior courtyard and so were quiet, even though the hotel faces a busy street. It took us 15 minutes or more to walk to the historic sites of the old city.

Hidden gem of a B&B type hotel

Reviewed By Charles N

We and another couple stayed here for four nights and had an very good experience. The B&B is located on the edge of town, easy to get to by car, yet close walking distance to the center of town. Although there is parking near by, pay for the parking in the courtyard - it is well worth it. In our four days we only saw an empty parking place once in the public parking near by. The owners even blocked traffic so we could easily get in and out of the courtyard parking - super nice people that provided excellent service while we were there. The breakfast is nice and the rooms are well kept and clean. There is some street noise at night, but it usually dies down by eleven.

Reasonable price, top location in old city center

Reviewed By mhorngacher

On arrival our host was exceptionally helpful and provided us with valuable details in English on historic and other sights of interest, tips regarding the Mantovan cuisine and other practical information. The double bed was big and comfortable and most of the breakfast was home-made by our host (yoghurt, marmelade, cakes). Although the B&B is situated in the old city center, it was very quiet. Except for the home-baked croissants (very crispy and sugarfree) and yoghurt, the breakfast was sweet (no cheese, normal bread, eggs or sausages). But that is normal in Italy and when you know that you could possibly bring something with you.

We spent three wonderful days in this lovely hotel, which makes you feel at home from the very first moment. The rooms are all decorated in different styles, you can stay in Taipur, Nice, Amsterdam etc. We had the pleasure to stay in Central Park, where you can take a shower in the middle of the room inside a glass cube. Brilliant! Francesca and Roberto and the rest of the staff are very welcoming and easy going. Don´t miss having a meal at the restaurant, it´s more than worth it. Fantastic food, good prices (ask for the bruschetta or the homemade pasta, very delicious!). Regarding all these aspects, the fact that you have to go on a short bus ride to get into Mantova City, didn´t really matter to us. Ottoetti rules!!
