Liguria, Italy Food Guide: 10 Ligurian food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Santa Margherita Ligure

July 29, 2020 Rosalyn Ihle

Find out what Ligurian restaurants to try in Santa Margherita Ligure. Set on the Gulf of Tigullio between Rapallo and Portofino, the resort/fishing town of Santa Margherita Ligure really couldn’t be in a better neighborhood. Fashionable but much quieter than Portofino, life in Santa Margherita Ligure centers around the lovely palm-laden harbor, where boating and simple sunning are the orders of the day. The town has some good shopping options, lovely cafes and interesting sights like its 16th-century castle and the 17th-century Basilica di Santa Margherita.

So I am reviewing this place from a vegetarians perspective. First of all the service was good. The waiter explained everything well and was very friendly. After explaining that I am a vegetarian and that eating 2 pasta dishes did not sound appealing to me he made an effort to offer an alternative which was the antipasti plate. On it was a white creamy fresh cheese, preserved peppers, white beans with onion, some sort of thin potato cakes, tomatoes with onion and tuna, salami ( i shared with non-vegetarian person). It was not my favourite but appreciated the possibility to have a starter. Then I had "candy-wrapped-style" pasta stuffed with spinach and served with walnut sauce. It was ok but maybe it could be served a bit warmer. For dessert I chose the focaccia tiramisu as this was the waiter's recommendation. I think the idea is nice but to my personal taste the cream was too thick (not fluffy) and the focaccia left a very salty taste. If you are into salty then this is your choice. I think the restaurant is better for meat-fish eaters but nevertheless I appreciated the good service. Dear Guest,we apriciated your comment about our service and our kitchen. We are always more than happy to suggest the best options for our guests such as vegetarians like you but also vegan or gluten free. Our menu changes almost every week and we always consider all our guests needs.Hoping to have you again as our guest!Best regardsTr4ttoria Staff

For main course we had grilled veal chop and swordfish. The food was ok, but nothing special, lacked seasoning/sauce if you ask me. Deserts (tiramisu and mousse) were okayish as well. Overall, we weren't wowed, but couldn't complain too much because of the price tag. Thanks Jonas for your visit.Excuse me, but what expectation do you have for a grilled meat or fish? It's simply grilled. That's it... in Italy, usually we don't use any sauce on the grilled meat. Only a good olive oil and pepper. Please pay attention: don't ask for any sauce if you're planning to visit Tuscany, and order a steak. They can be not so polite with you ;-)

We had a lovely evening at Ristorante Antonio. The setting outside is in a terraced roof garden and the staff from the second we arrived were very attentive and helpful. All of the meals were cooked very well, with the local fish and potatoes being a highlight of the meal. The staff fillet the fish at the table and served it beautifully. We will likely return again before the end of our holiday.

This was another recommendation from friends. We are not foody people, and we are budget conscious, but we enjoyed our pasta dishes and side orders, although portions were on the small side. The quality of the food was excellent, but more expensive than other places in Santa Margherita. Not convinced that the quality, though good, justified the higher prices.

Capo Nord is a divine restaurant on the Ligurian coast between Santa Margherita and Portofino. It sits on the water, with stunning views over Santa Margherita.Everything was superb. We shared a sushi and sashimi platter (35Eu) for appetiser which was extremely generous and of an exceptional quality. For mains we had pastas (20-25 Eu), which were beautifully cooked, and cheesecake (8Eu) for dessert which was delicious. The service was charming and attentive, and we were delighted to be offered a digestif at the end of the night by the delightful owner. I find it hard to believe that the restaurant has been essentially rebuilt since the storms of late 2018- it is perfect! We ordered a taxi to the restaurant- highway robbery at 25 Eu for ten minutes- and enjoyed the stroll back to our hotel afterwards (forty minutes). This restaurant is in a special location, and more charming and romantic than anything else we enjoyed in Santa or Portofino.

A delightful little al fresco restaurant set in a short paved courtyard about 300m west of the centre of Santa Margherita Ligure off the Portofino road. You must go, but make sure you book. Fantastic fresh local produce prepared with great love and care, and great service. We had octopus and mustard dressing and seafood carpachio to start, then the special ravioli with a beef sauce. All extremely good, followed by 2 exquisite puddings. They clearly love what they do and yearn to share it with diners. Do go!Many thanks for last night, "Mr John" and the wife

We decided to eat a little out of town to try to get away from the crowds. We were lucky enough to secure a table here. The food was sublime, the salmon and tuna were sashimi grade with great accompaniments. The octopus was far and away the best we have ever eaten, the sweet potato mousse with it was perfect. The staff were terrific and given the quantity and quality of the food, prices very reasonable. It is a pity we discovered it so late in our visit.Grazie, grazie davvero. È stato un piacere avervi ospiti. Arrivederci e buone vacanze!Margherita e staff

This restaurant (ristorante) is located at the edge of city-center.When you enter it, first you might underestimate this restaurant. The interior design is looking quite simple and not luxurious. But more important is what will come then or next...Fast we received the menu and got well informed from Federico =co-owner, who has served us.The choice of excellent wines is extensive.Remarkable: All are offered at fair (!) prices.Fresh bread was served. Tables have table cloth. And we got textile napkins. For starters we ordered " crudo misto di pesce", 22 €!"Cappellacio di orata con gamberi cotti e crudi", 18€. ( Ravioli, home made). The ordered red wine, " Barbaresco", 36,00 € from Marchesi di Barolo, was of perfect quality and taste, offered at an unbeatable price! For main I ordered grilled Tuna. The quality was average. It was accompanied by fried potatoes (average) " al forno". 25,00 €.The cook (also co-owner ) is named Valerio. He has done a good job. These offers, quality and preparation you will find very seldom.I am sure that we will return!I can highly recommend this restaurant! Credit cards will be accepted. The toilet is really clean! My subjective rating:Presentation of meals: 4 pointsQuality and preparing of meals: 4-5 pointsAmbiance: 3-4 pointsValue for money: 5 pointsToilet: 4 pointsOffers: 5 pointsGrazie della visita e anche dei suoi preziosi consigli a presto Valerio e Federico

The best dining experience on our trip! The previews were absolutely right. You have to have dinner here, if you are a foodie, you should try the tasting meal. Everything is made fresh with great respect to the ingredients. I opted for the a la cart dish -rosso gambero. So happy. Prawns tasted like lobster. Super delicious. My husband opted for the tasting menu. Equally happy. It's good because we shared all the food. Half bottle of wine, prosecco. Just the right portions each time. The owner treats you like family with warmth and passionate about making your meal. Be warned, Italians savor their meals. Make a reservation if possible or come early to occupy one of the 9 tables! Thank you Pasquale Thancks
