Tembe Elephant Park

There is a place in Africa where the wild elephants still roam. The legendary Ivory Route where the great tuskers still tramp their ancient pathways through dense sand-forest and tall yellow grass. This is Tembe Elephant Park, a 300 square kilometer reserve between Zululand and Mozambique, home to Africa’s largest elephants as well as the smallest antelope, the suni. The Big Five also find their home here – lion, leopard, black and white rhino and buffalo, as well as more than 340 bird species and myriad other animals and plants. It is a world of hot silence and white sand, where the busy modern world ceases to exist and only the rising and setting of the sun marks the passage of time. It is also the ancestral home of the Tembe people, who co-own and manage Tembe Elephant Park Lodge: a place of warm African hospitality, classic safari food, world-class personal service. This is where you will find the Africa of story and legend, of adventure and myth. And it’s waiting for you….

Disappointing stay, won’t return.

Accommodation and meals were fine. Guide catered to birders and was obnoxious on occasion. Never saw one female elephant in 5 game drives. Amazing that the other guide saw herds of females and babies on three occasions while our vehicle did not. I guess the guides do not radio each other about where the sightings are. I paid for a private transfer and before leaving camp, without my permission, the guide picked up a friend on leave for a free ride to nearby where I was going. I asked if she was sharing the cost as it was very expensive for me. Answered no and laughed. I felt this was very unprofessional on the part of the lodge. I would not go back to Tembe.

Outstanding concept

Reviewed By 709aneta

We had pretty high expectations and were definitely nót disappointed. Outstanding concept at amazing location. So much thought has been given to detail, outfittings, smoothness of arranging extra services, we found it almost too good to be true until we found out this concept originated in some Dutch minds.... Haha not chauvinistic at all :-) But honestly, breakfast and braaibaskets do the trick. Hassle free to order, reasonably priced and above all of excellent quality!! Drinks and snacks can be bought at reception or bring your own. Everything else in the tent has been thought of: blitz, mat he's and first batch of braaiwood, microwave, kettle etc etc never found a self catering accommodation to be so complete. We had the best of times and will most definitely try out some of the other camps.Thank you AfriCamps!

Indwe Farm Stay

The Indwe Farm Stay offers self-catering cottage accommodation on a working farm in the historic Bloodriver area, where the Boers trekked into the great unknown. Come and experience the hospitality of farmers, get to hold the cutest little chicks and see calves born, fish, hike, ride a mountain bike, have a romantic sunset picnic, enjoy a yummy braai at the dam, sail or go out in the kayak. The cottage can accommodate up to 2 guests and contains 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, and a kitchen and dining area. The bedroom contains 2 single beds. The bathroom contains a bath, a toilet and a washbasin. The kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering with a gas hob, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, cutlery and crockery, and a 3-seater dining table and chairs. There is a cosy outdoor area with a fireplace, an outdoor dining table and chairs, and braai facilities. The cottage is set in a tranquil and bird friendly farm garden. Go to bed with the sound of the barn owls heading off to hunt and wake up to the sound of guinea fowl on your doorstep. If you are lucky the resident duiker can be spotted grazing outside. The farm borders the world famous Bloodriver Vlei which is one of the largest inland wetlands in the country. It supports no fewer than 150 different bird species, and serves as a wintering place for migratory birds, and is particularly important for the endangered blue and crowned cranes This part of KwaZulu-Natal's Midlands is a series of gently rolling hills on a plateau almost 1,800 miles above sea level. When the hills do not predominate then the Mpumalanga Drakensberg escarpment makes its presence known.

Quaint, peaceful and homely

Reviewed By Kirdne

From making the phonecall, and confirming availability, (despite being a Saturday and already well into the afternoon), throughout my stay, I was made to feel truly welcome. The campsite, is private, and has a "story-book" charm, set amongst some conifers and a pear tree, in close proximity to the clean and neat ablutions with attention to detail, and creative, earthy decor. This is not a campsite for those seeking commercial feel outdoors, but will speak to anyone, who wishes to experience "off the beaten track" and the unusual, with a genuine farm style, homely feel to it,( including Duke and his friendly tail-wagging crew) There is an adjacent cottage, that I will definitely be visiting in the near future. The owners, Dieter and Gail, are genuine " where a handshake and a smile still mean something" sort of people. Helpful, to say the least !!!! On the way to the nearby dam (more about that later) my propshaft decided to break (yes its a landy). Dieter came to my assistance, armed with a toolbox and a tow-rope and was under the car in no time, helping to detach it, and tow it back to the campsite. To cut a long story short, I also got to know the rest of the family, who went completely out of their way, to get me sorted out, and safely back to Vryheid. Gunther, Dieters brother, took me into town, and sourced a spare part, as well as "the right people to do the job". To put it plainly......I would have been stranded without their help. About the dam, which is walking distance........if you love bass fishing, peace and solitude, blue cranes, calling from a nearby field, and the occasional fish eagle cry, interspersed with the occasional mooooh.....this is for you. Enough said. You will fall in love with the place, as I have. Thank you again, Dieter and Gail. For your hospitality and kindness. Wishing you only the best for the future.

This was our second stop on our honeymoon and really was a great find! The only negative is that Monzi is not in the hub of St Lucia, but what makes up for it is the privacy of the apartments, which are completely secluded and well maintained. I'd rather drive a few km's to get to St Lucia than stay in a bnb right next to someone else. Definitely won't be disappointed.

Best stay ever

Its difficult to pin point the highlights of our stay. The scenery was breath taking, the cottage was beautiful. Jack gives an excellent educational talk about trout and the hatchery. Tash spoilt us with trout pate and home made bread. The workers on the farm are friendly and kept our cottage spotless. In an unsafe world, it is such a relief to stay in a place that is so safe. The restsurants we were referred to were of the best quality. 10 days of soul searching and total relaxation. We were even blessed with snow on the Lesotho mountains! A holiday to remember, and a destination we will certainly return to.
