Visiting a friend in Cottenham, I wasn’t that excited to hear that there was a takeaway called the Curry Palace a 5 minute walk from the house. Given it was late, and we were hungry, we headed over ready for nothing too special. How lucky was I to have made that decision. I’ve eaten out a lot at all price levels, but it’s rare for food to make me sit up and smile like I did at Curry Palace. Giles Coren has to has to review it...The restaurant itself turns out to be smart, discreet and flatteringly but also usefully lit. Busy, we were nonetheless given a good table for two. The Bangladeshi menu isn’t overlong, and there were lots of unfamiliar dishes e.g. Sukka lamb, along side the usual culprits like onion bhaji. The first meal was completely exceptional. Each dish was fragrant, balanced in spicing and beautifully judged. Crisp-crunchy just cooked king prawns, chopped into morsels and coated in a semi-dry spice and herb mix was outstanding. Piping hot, every dish is made from scratch to order. Served on roasting hot plates, already wonderful food stayed succulent and delicious.Having checked opening times and train times back to London fromCambridge, I figured there was enough time to have an early dinner there. The king prawn dish had given me courage to try the old favourite, onion bhaji, which was rendered light and delicate, with none of the heavy gram flour gloop which curses most of the churned out versions I’ve set sadly to one side in the past. The Sukka lamb also was a revelation. Marinated tender lamb, barbecued - on coals? - to give it a semi-charred and crisp exterior, is then pulled and served with a cooked down blend of peppers and onions. Sweet and sticky, hot and herbal, one of the best lamb dishes I’ve ever had. No doubt two of the best meals I’ve had this year, my friend is going to see a lot more of me in future. We’ve got the rest of the menu to try!

One of the worst places we ever been to eat. Rude staff and very disappointing meal.
