El Calafate Bed and Breakfast Inns | Places to Stay in El Calafate

May 14, 2023 Ying Subia

Building on its must-visit location, the once-tiny El Calafate has grown quickly to cater to and profit from the visitors to nearby Los Glaciares National Park. Many visit to see such natural wonders as Perito Moreno Glacier, a massive glacier that’s actually composed of many other pieces of shifting ice. Yet travelers will find that El Calafate is much more than merely a gateway to the Patagonian wild—it’s a fun town offering all sorts of outdoor adventures.

Ideal El Calafate Hotel

Reviewed By caicosbound

This is a fantastic find in El Calafate. Ideally positioned hotel in the middle of town and next door to our favorite restaurant. The hotel is elegant, rooms are modern and very comfortable, included breakfast is phenomenal, and the hosts couldn't be more friendly. One of the proprietors is also a local Guide and can arrange personalized tours that I believe will be preferred to the larger tour groups. I highly recommend this boutique hotel.

A comfortable stay

Reviewed By B0B0chan

We stayed at a private double room with a big and comfortable bed. Very warm inside the room with the heat on. Room is clean. Breakfast is good. Location is good for those using the bus terminal, walking distance. A little bit far from the town Centro but still manageable on foot. Staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. P.S. the hotel also has apartments which seems nice also.

terrible experience

Reviewed By Alex C

I would strongly recommend against visiting. I ate here three nights ago. The lamb mains we ordered were still cold/frozen in the middle despite being apparently pre-cooked through. When we sent it back the same plates came back having been microwaved or heated in some way. We decided it wasn't a good place to eat and offered to pay for everything except the mains (which we hadn't eaten). When we said we shouldn't pay for the uneaten small side salad they called the police.. in about 2 minutes of this discussion starting. The chef/owner stood in front of the main door until the police arrived stopping us from leaving. We wanted the situation to end so paid for everything including the salad except the mains. They still made us wait until the police arrived. Once the police arrived we had to deal with the situation of the owner/chef throwing accusations at us (we don't know what they were as only speak basic Spanish). They then decided they wanted us to pay for one of the (uneaten) mains. After broken discussions with them and the police we decided to pay to end the situation out of fear of it escalating and the police feeling the need to arrest us. The policeman seemed to think the situation was ridiculous - holding his head in his hands. I know the story sounds ridiculous but we were polite and calm at all times. It's unbelievable how quickly they called the police. The manager was extremely rude and aggressive. The whole experience very demoralising. Completely over the top. Just not a place anybody should visit if they want good food or a good experience. There's no point you should be served food that is potentially unhealthy then aggressively made to pay for it. I don't normally write reviews. But I really feel the need to warn people against this place.

Decent place but stay away

Reviewed By Avike54

We stayed at Patagonia Suites for 2 nights. A mother and daughter seem to run the place. We met the daughter right at the beginning where she explained that she didn't accept credit cards. This was a lie that she told all incoming guests. The reason being that if you don't pay with foreign credit card you pay 21% more for VAT. Thus the price went up from $110 to $133…! Great way to treat guests touring your country. Unfortunately they are not alone. Most view you as a money machine or meal ticket to be milked. The room was ok and the communal kitchen adequately stocked. The ppl who ran it just weren't very nice. Pics below communal kitchen, looking across the yard.

Great staff, average accommodation

Reviewed By Dakles

The big plus for this accommodation is Estalla, the lady who manages the properties on site. She is the friendliest and most welcoming person and a pure joy. Nothing is too much trouble and she is always smiling. She keeps the place spotlessly clean and tidy. Sadly, we didn't feel that the accommodation lived up to her billing. We had a ground floor studio which felt a bit dark and dingy and didn’t feel to be a very welcoming environment. The apartment was pretty well worn and could do with some TLC in respect of decor and finishings. Noise insulation from the upstairs apartment is very poor and we heard every movement. This was a particular problem as the upstairs guests liked to come in very late after we were in bed and we had our sleep disrupted every night for the 3 nights we stayed there. We also had a problem with the heating in our unit which was on permanently (in high summer!!). Not only did this make the room very warm but there was a constant gushing noise of hot water in the pipework which went every 30 seconds or so throughout the night. Estella did rectify the problem for us by calling an engineer who turned off our radiators and drained out the water. The property is located in a residential neighbourhood about a 15 minute walk to the centre (steeply uphill coming back). On the plus-side, the shower is very good.

Great, affordable apartment

Reviewed By Sarah-Ryan1

We stayed one night in an apartment for a good deal (about 60 US dollars). Nice kitchenette with plenty of cookware for our breakfast. Comfortable and clean space and nice location--not far to walk to the bus stop or the town center but still felt on the outskirts so it was quiet. Really friendly front desk staff. The woman apologized for not speaking English but we were trying to say (in our poor Spanish) not to apologize! Argentina is a Spanish speaking country so we are sorry that we can't speak better Spanish. We didn't love El Calafate but this was great accommodation for a fair price! Recommended!

Charming

Reviewed By ABIV88

Patagonia Rebelde is a hidden gem. It's as if you walk in a movie scene from the dusty and busy streets. The rooms are spacious, clean and so beautifully furnished. The main area is really cosy and looks like a saloon. Breakfast was good with fresh and local products. More extensive choice than Argentinian standards. They offer airport shuttle service if you book in advance. It's a 30 minute drive. 5 minute walk from the bus station. The walk was a little dark at night.

‪Note that ‬the lodge is quite far from the center and if you walk it is a steep path with many loose dogs barking or climbing on top of you, they did nothing to us, but it is a bit scary. They state the price in USD to be paid in ARS, but then they ask for USD or an overpriced exchange rate. The service is friendly, but the owner is kind of rude and disrespectful, she did not want to listen to us and called us ignorants... Lack of maintenance: leaky toilet tanks, doors that don’t close, spider webs ... They don't even provide a simple bar of soap in the bathroom. Very noisy at night: you can hear everything that is spoken in reception, leaky toilet tanks from other rooms, a kind of engine that keeps starting intermittently ... Avoid it!
