Edinburgh Hotels | Places to Stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s neighborhoods developed as the city did. Originally its heart lay in the alleys and cobbled streets of the Old Town, below the castle. Then, in the late-18th century, the residential focus shifted north to a huge planned Georgian New Town. That’s now become the city’s business center, while visitor attractions and nightlife have become fairly evenly shared between these two central districts. Around them, a ring of residential districts now house most of those living in central Edinburgh. Though less good for sightseeing, these neighborhoods are just as busy and typified by thriving restaurant scenes and large parks.

Location, Location, Service

Reviewed By flagfan

This hotel was beautiful and the staff provided excellent service. However, what I appreciated most was the location, a short walk to museums (art gallery and portrait gallery), shopping, tour bus starting area, and COVID testing site (about a 5-10 minute walk; important because at the time I went a test was required before returning to the United States). The room (junior suite) was very large (although a bit dark) and the bathroom had an great bathtub and separate shower. This is an excellent hotel to stay in when in Edinburgh.

Plenty of power points to charge phone, laptop etc at the same time. Two indivldual radiators with temperature control setting. One is in the room, the other one in the bathroom. Handy to keep towels dry. Good sized fridge can be handy if you stay here for multiple nights. Supermarkets are around the corner. Down side is the windows are not double glazed so one night I stayed it was bit noisy with traffic.

Cheval Old Town Chambers

We’ve created an award-winning collection of luxury, serviced apartments that combine stylish design with all the benefits of home, where the great city location is the cherry on top. They are most definitely apartments done distinctively. Like home, but better. We’ve put some serious thought into designing apartments that not only encourage easy living, but look stunning from floor-to-ceiling. Whilst you kick off your shoes and settle in, we’ll quietly be beavering away in the background to ensure that all the important little details are taken care of – in a nutshell, it’s the best bits of hotel service with the added freedom of apartment living. Lateral City’s eclectic portfolio of apartments includes three distinct and rather magnificent properties. There’s Merchiston Residence, set in a leafy residential quarter, a short stroll from the city centre, 15th-century Old Town Chambers, just off Prince’s Street, and our newest jewel, The Edinburgh Grand, smack-bang in the beating heart of town. Unique and idiosyncratic in character they ooze the uncommon, but all share our passion for stylish design, contemporary features and ultra-modern technology. We don’t define your stay, we’re simply here to make it that bit more amazing.

Birthday stay made perfect

We visited back in feb/March for my Husbands birthday (sorry for the late review, my other TA account got locked so made a new account!!). The hotel were really understanding that we’ve had to move our reservation a couple of times due to covid, and we’re so welcoming. Excellent location in the old town part, so close to many fab restaurants and bars and of course the castle. Thank you (to Michael I think that was his name?!!) who arranged little touches to our room for my Husband on his special birthday. Next time we sort a break in Edinburgh we will be back without a doubt. Highly recommend :)

Very central location in New Town. Close to Waverly Train station and some convenient bus routes. And restaurants galore nearby. Staff were very friendly from start to finish. Excellent breakfast, minus the scrambled eggs floating in water. Not my cup of tea. Lovely floral arrangement made its way to our room as requested as well.

Poor service

Reviewed By Lukasa94

Upon check in we were told that the luggage room was full and that we would have to sit and wait for two hours as there were no available rooms. Shortly after we witnessed a gentleman being checked in and given a room to then have to ask again and the staff only offering us a room after we re approached them. We stayed three nights and in that time the room was not cleaned once nor were any towels replaced which as per the guidance we had to leave in the shower tray to have replaced. Overall the hotel is clean, tidy and everything you would want for a couple of nights but the experience falls short when the basics go undone.

Disappointing service for a 5 star hotel

Reviewed By Z7490HVaudreyf

Had a drink in the bar before dinner in restaurant Mark Greenway. Despite there being three members of staff behind the bar they struggled to serve two gin and tonics. Initially told my friend they had no flavoured gins until she pointed them out behind the bar. No goblet glass to serve the gin in, but they did find us large wine glasses. We carried our drinks through to the peacock lounge, but struggled to pay for them because we brought them from the bar?? When we did eventually pay we were changed £3.50 service charge. Should have waited and had drinks in the restaurant as the same gins in there were less expensive. Definitely not a 5 star experience!

Great stay if you get at the right price

Superb location. Located just off the Edinburgh Park Station Stop and is a 1minute walk. Standard double room is spacious and modern. Big bath in bathroom and excellent shower. Swimming pool is good - warm and clean however i tried to use everyday over my 4 day stay and everyday it was full of unsupervised children. Ive no issue with children but as a solo traveller I thought allocated times for adults/families would be good and certainly small children should be supervised. Decor throughout hotel is very clean and modern. Breakfast is good however, no variety day to day and definitely not worth the £18 charged for it. There's KFC, Krispy Kremes, Tesco, Aldi and TKMaxx all within 5min walk. Ate dinner in hotel one night, no complaints. Air Con in my room didn't work but I didn't complain as I didn't need it. Staff are all very friendly, however anything you ask at reception they will Google- nothing you couldn't do yourself. Knowledge of local area (buses etc) seems to be lacking. At the tram stop there is a bus stop, number 36 will bring you to Ocean Terminal to see Royal Britannia (Bus is £1.80) otherwise tram to St. Andrews Square and bus 11 from Dublin Street. The tram is an excellent service (pre book ticket online, better value) all in all a good stay just a few tweaks needed to make it excellent
