Edinburgh Bed and Breakfast Inns | Places to Stay in Edinburgh

April 24, 2023 Dorsey Hagwood

Edinburgh’s neighborhoods developed as the city did. Originally its heart lay in the alleys and cobbled streets of the Old Town, below the castle. Then, in the late-18th century, the residential focus shifted north to a huge planned Georgian New Town. That’s now become the city’s business center, while visitor attractions and nightlife have become fairly evenly shared between these two central districts. Around them, a ring of residential districts now house most of those living in central Edinburgh. Though less good for sightseeing, these neighborhoods are just as busy and typified by thriving restaurant scenes and large parks.

A good stay at Native Edinburgh

Room 002 Firstly someone mentions below there being no lobby? There certainly is, with a reception and small but well stocked bar. Pros: The apartment itself is a decent size and obviously comes with a great size fridge, dishwasher, hobs and kettle. There is ample opportunities for storage which is great. Relatively clean on arrival. It seems someone does come into the room at times as we noticed additional toilet rolls, the bins being emptied and extra coffee/tea. Great size TV. The bathroom for me was excellent. - a large sink , hot towel rail and both a waterfall and standard shower with great pressure. Shampoo and shower gel provided. Management and staff were excellent - welcoming, kind and genuinely interested in the development of Native. On the first day the key cards were not available but this was not an issue for us and was handled professionally and quickly resolved with as little interruption to our holiday as possible. There is breakfast available (croissants, pastries etc) at an additional price - we didn’t try it but looked great. The reception is manned 24/7 which is helpful and handy. After 10ishpm (might be 9 not sure) you can use your key card to gain access. Good heating and air con - works quickly and quietly! Cons: The kitchenette missed essentials which made it not very usable for us. No toaster, no freezer (I would have put in a fridge with a small freezer shelf - plenty if not too much fridge space). There was no milk for tea and coffee, no oil, salt and pepper etc. We went out to buy milk on the first day. It would have been helpful to know what is included in the service - we knew someone was coming into the room due to changes like adding toilet roll but the bed was not being made etc (we didn’t expect any service to be honest). TV was logged into an Italian service (we sorted this ourselves after some time). We had to shut all blinds and curtains as it faced a restaurant and people would look straight into your room. Other: People were still logged into streaming services (please be careful doing this - we could have racked up a hefty bill by purchasing films on some innocent persons account). Didn’t bother me but I did overhear staff discussing pay, in particular wanting a pay rise. Might not be appropriate in front of guests. The staff are still sorting out the bar and services linked to the bar. They were very kind and open to trying to make drinks that were not on the menu. Just be aware not everyone behind the bar may be a bartender. Initially we thought there was only one set of towels - the other is in the wardrobe as an FYI! You are at one side of Edinburgh, close to the new town but about a 20 minute walk to the old town with some inclines. Didn’t bother us but may be helpful for others to know. Native is near a few coffee shops and an excellent but expensive cocktail bar (panda and sons) - it gets busy at the weekend so book early.

Two night stay in May

Reviewed By fiwvelarde

I have stayed at B+B quite a few times and have never written a review before. My son and his family live in Edinburgh so I visit quite regularly. If there are too many of us to stay in my sons flat, my husband and I offer to stay in Hotels. So we have tried quite a few over the 11 years our son has lived here. I felt compelled to write a review and it is a shame to be so negative as the building is quite beautiful. I stayed in my room as little as possible as it really was quite depressing. Up at the top of the building as I was on my own. The lighting flickered, the bathroom door creaked and I worried about disturbing others up in the attic as I could here the people next to me coughing through the thin walls. The plugs in the bathroom had come off their chains, the body lotion was half used. The sockets by the bed were under a large glass table they use as a bedside table and if you were elderly or not able to go on your hands and knees would not be able to use them. This is also where the kettle is?? The paint is peeling off the ceiling in the bedroom and the bathroom and the whole room needs re decorating. The rooms are un loved which is a pity as it could be a super place to stay. My two night stay cost £297 not cheap!

The Haymarket Hotel

The Haymarket Hotel is an independent, family-run hotel, spread over 6 Victorian townhouses, situated along a traditional cobbled street in the historic west end of Edinburgh in The Haymarket area. The hotel offers a fabulous central location, yet is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the centre. It’s a short 10 minute walk to the city centre and its major attractions, a stone’s throw from Haymarket train station, and with easy access to the airport. It also makes a great base for heading out of Edinburgh to see the sights of the surrounding areas around the Capital. Guest can relax and enjoy the Scottish hospitality from the comfort of these heritage townhouses, which were originally built in the middle of the 19th century as part of the new town, and primarily inhabited by wealthy merchants, businessmen and professionals of the day. The Logan family have gradually restored the townhouses over the last 25 years, sympathetically converting the row of terraced buildings to offer 70 comfortable well appointed, traditional yet modern bedrooms, whilst retaining the charm and character of the period. Logan’s serves up a delicious full Scottish breakfast and continental buffet every morning, and also hosts all day coffees. The bar area is also great for later in the day and serves a good selection of local beers and a wide selection of malt whiskies to enjoy socome in, relax and enjoy our warm welcome and Scottish hospitality. Several boutiques, restaurants and bars can be found within a 5-minute walk of the property. Edinburgh Castle and Murrayfield Stadium are nearby.

Good stay, decent location

Reviewed By Ian K

I had a 3 night stay at the Haymarket which was fine for my needs. It's located just a short 3 minutes or so walk from Haymarket station, bus & tram stop giving easy & quick access to city centre. Hotel comprises a series of large town houses rather than 1 main building. Main reception is the first building as you enter Coates Gardens. This house also contains breakfast room & well stocked residents bar. My room was in the second "house" along. Reception are very helpful & came outside as I checked in to explain the arrangement. Room was on 3rd floor (stairs only) & was a large room with separate bathroom (shower only). Bed was quite firm but fine for me. Room safe, tea & coffee provided. A fridge woukd have been welcome but not provided. Hotel has a rraditiobal feel to it rather ghan a modern chain. But everything clean & functioning. My room overlooked a garden to the back & I found it nice & quiet & I slept well each night. I had a buffett type breakfast for 2 days which was adequate only. Cooked options though looked very good. I was slightly worried about covenience of location beforehand but it was actually fine due to proximity to Haymarket. There is a small supernarket just round the corner. Good stay here & I would book again.

The Bridge Inn

Situated in a stunning and picturesque setting on the banks of the Union Canal, the Bridge Inn is a unique pub and restaurant. The Bridge Inn is a wonderful place to visit, to taste some of our freshly cooked food, try some cask ales or sample from our expanding wine list, and enjoy a warm and friendly atmosphere and welcome. Wherever possible we use seasonal, Scottish, fresh, local produce, and everything is freshly prepared. We grow our own herbs and vegetables in a walled garden slightly along the canal from the pub. We have a small herd of saddleback pigs, and our menus often feature delicious home-produced pork on the menu. We use locally-shot game when it is in season. We always have a range of cask ales from breweries which we know throughout Scotland. We have had lots of fun selecting our wine list, which we have tried to make one of the best value wine lists in Scotland. And we currently have on a selection of over 20 single malts from around this beautiful country. We have now finished an ambitious renovation project that has transformed the Bridge Inn. We have created an atmospheric country pub in the 18th century part of the building with open fires and comfortable seating. We have altered the upstairs to create 4 beautiful and unique en-suite bedrooms. They each have a different feel, but each has its own view of the canal and surrounding countryside. The Bridge Inn won Best B & B by Visit Scotland's Thistle Awards for the East of Scotland. Finally our bistro alongside the canal has been upgraded and we have added a terrace alongside the building to make the most of our unique setting.

A Lovely Little Inn close to Edinburgh Airport

Reviewed By KarenandBarry34

This is a beautiful little place in a quiet village only about 10 minutes' drive from the airport. The staff is very accommodating and friendly, the room was small but comfy and charming, and the food in the restaurant was the best we had in our 3 weeks stay in the UK. The bar area was lively, but we were ready for some quiet, so the restaurant was a great place for us to relax and enjoy a good meal before our trip home. Highly recommend.

Allocated smaller cheaper room than booked & paid for. Owner had a bad very unhelpful attitude when complaint made and not interested in trying to resolve a guest complaint. Took 2 attempts to speak with owner until he made an offer for a free breakfast or a feee drink or a room change. We asked for a room refund difference which he declined to give us, due to already being settled into room and our schedule we had to delineate his other offers. Other guests were also subjected to same room scam! Room dirty/dusty. Bed side table lamps held together with gray tape. All other staff we encountered were good.

Not worth it

We done alot of research into staying somewhere nice in and around Edinburgh. Its easy to get the buses to this place. Takes about 10mins from the city center. We booked a double room with bathroom. When we got there we had to go to our room through the dinner room. Got to the room and it was small, dated, dirty and dull. As soon as we got in we looked around. There were 2 tiny cupboards each side of the bed. Plugs on the left hand side of the bed didn't work. As its beside the dinning room and a set of stairs there was constant noise. And the gaps around the doors meant we heard every footstep. The worst part was that we ordered a room with private bathroom as stated online but got to the room and our bathroom was across the hall. And being beside the dining room it was used by others in the morning. Would not recommend this place
