Avoid this house

The room me and my wife booked for two nights was not what we were expected, not clean and the furniture was very old. But the real problem is that second night we had no hot water and because downstairs is a pub and music played very loud we had no chance to fell asleep till the dj finished his job around 1AM. Awful place. I'll never visit that house again and advise everyone to avoid it. Thank you

Lunch break on the way to South Devon

Reviewed By The_Original_Dodger

Took scenic route from Wedt London to South Devon. Many pubs were closed on route so we were pleased to find this one open. Refurbished before 1st lockdown but still really pleasant inside, nice and clean and tidy. We both had Haddock and chips with a pea fritter declined the curry sauce why spoil a British classic. Not cheap but really good food, English breakfast offered until 11am, also offers different take aways each day useful for locals. May call in on the way home.

West-wouldn't

Reviewed By ElleRedm

So, we had booked out 3 rooms for 3 nights and another 2 rooms for 2 nights at Westwood for a family wedding, so quite the monetary contribution (about £1500) from one family for the weekend. We travelled from Ireland and some of us from Newcastle so pretty long journeys to get here. I’ll start with the good points. - The B&B is very central to Dorchester in that it is on the high street, not much around restaurant wise that was open late but we were willing to travel about the Dorset area so that was grand. - The price is reasonable for the area. - The bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean and well presented, no issues here. - Car parking is available just a short walk away. It’s cheap enough, just remember to pay! I’d say this B&B is not suitable if you have any mobility issues. Now for the not so good points. - We booked the room well in advance, months ago in fact, however a couple of days before we were due to arrive I received an email saying that my booking was cancelled. Strange I thought, so I called an hour after I received my email thinking it must have been a mistake, but NO! My Friday night reservation had been cancelled, someone else had taken the reservation and now only my Saturday and Sunday bookings were available! “WHAT?! How is that possible? What happened? This is very disappointing.” Clearly I was very disappointed, my family were all staying in this B&B the night before the wedding and now I was on my own. WELL, the woman at the other end of the call showed zero sympathy and told me about how she was very concerned that they could not fill the space and went on and on about her business and herself – that must have been a long hour for her. She said the cancellation was nothing to do with her. Luckily I managed to find a room in Weymouth on the Friday. - Arrived at Westwood on the Saturday morning, and the male host came across very nice and accommodating but it definitely felt insincere. We smiled and thanked him and went up to the room to get ready for the wedding. We were out all day and came back just after midnight, respectfully and quietly returned to our rooms – impressive for a group of Irish folk. In the morning, the female host, a small angry woman, shouted into the conservatory at my cousin about checking out, who to her knowledge, had already checked out. We all looked at each other and then down to our toast. How awkward and rude. “She must have a chip on her shoulder” one said, “more like a full spud” said another. - We weren’t approached at all by the hosts after that really, which felt a bit flat for a B&B with such good reviews about the hosts. Maybe we had different hosts? Maybe they hated us? Anything is possible. - Monday morning, we got up and came downstairs at 7.15am, to checkout, leave early and head back home. I heard the hosts up and we thought we will get a cup of tea and coffee before we leave. I knocked on the door at 7.25am, and asked if we could get a cup of tea before we leave. “Breakfast starts at 7.30am.” Taken aback, I said “Oh sorry I thought it was 7, but could we just get a cup of tea?” “If you had have told us last night we could have prepared for that”. “No worries, just after a cup of tea”. I went and sat back down, my parents had heard the conversation and were disgusted by this attitude. Then, he appeared, smiling 5 minutes later, at 7.30am, “What can I get you?” and brought us breakfast. We ate our breakfast in silence and left immediately. No ‘thanks’ for staying with them or friendly goodbyes. What a lovely place, spoiled by insincere and condescending hosts. They ruined the experience for all of us and preserved the stereotype that is “unfriendly southerners”. We won’t be back.
